Frontman Rivers Cuomo just released a solo album of old home recordings & demos. I just picked that up a couple days ago and I'm digging it - but then again, they were my high school heroes back in the day and I might be biased. I've seen their name mentioned in other threads round here. The next weezer album is slated for an April release, so their touring around Roo time is quite likely. It's a possibility, but what do you think?

You know, I like Weezer but after seeing part of their set at Lollapalooza in '06 I just dont feel like they are something I'd ever need to see again. Digable Planets turned out to be a much better show for me.
Edit: Can you tell me a little about the solo release? I'm definitely interested to hear more about it.
I've seen them 14 times (remember, high school heroes) and that Lollapalooza set was the second-worst of them all. The absolute worst one I saw was about a month prior, when they co-headlined Summerfest in Milwaukee with the Pixies - who are a tough act to follow. The Pixies blew them out of the water both times, and they did themselves a disservice playing after them.
The solo album is essentially weezer outtakes, since he's the creative engine of the band. (I think only My Name Is Jonas, Surf Wax America and a few Maladroit songs have co-writing credit given to other band members.) Most of those songs were written with weezer in mind with just a few exceptions. There is a grungier demo of Buddy Holly. One highlight for me is the solo-acoustic "Chess," which is one of the few on there that weren't meant for the band. Most importantly, to me at least, are some tracks from Songs from the Black Hole - the unreleased intended space-rock-opera follow-up to the blue album, from which about half the Pinkerton tracks came: Blast Off, Who You Callin' Bitch?, Dude We're Finally Landing, Superfriend, and - my personal favorite - Longtime Sunshine.
Most of that stuff has been available to download for years, but that doesn't mean it doesn't make for a nice addition to the weezer(ish) catalog.
My favorite three tracks: Longtime Sunshine Chess Blast Off
Think of it like this: It recalls the era of his songwriting when he had no problems throwing a few "god damns" into the mix.
When I saw them play the Maladroit tour, they weren't very good. And they were playing a lot of Pinkerton material (my favorite album) the night I saw them. So no thank you.
Wouldn't mind seeing a solo set though if there was nothing else going on.

I also used to be a huge Weezer fan. Saw 'em twice on the Make Believe tour and thought it was a great show. Not completely sure it's Roo material, but I won't complain.
Just making sure. I wish they'd do something like that with this next album. Or anything epic, for that matter. I've really lost faith in them as songwriters.
Rivers just really isn't in a place to be writing from where he used to be. I partly blame Rick Rubin for turning Rivers onto the meditation (that's how you wind up with stuff like "Peace" from Make Believe) although getting married - Rivers finally got his Japanese girl! - doesn't really help the girl trouble/angst angle either.
i'm gonna go with no. unless they only play stuff from the blue album. i never could get into their stuff after that album, and then when i heard the make believe album, i was nearly in tears it was so awful. what happened to them?
I've got posters on the wall... but not too many in my old age/increasingly domesticated state. This one's just about the last one standing. They did a signing at the Mars Cheese Castle in Kenosha WI the week the green album came out.
Heh...I just saw this thread and felt the need to butt in because of my screen name, which of course I got from "Mykel & Carli". Weezer is my favorite band and would definitely be part of my dream lineup. I saw them on their "Enlightenment Tour" back in 2002 and I thought they were incredible. I still have the t-shirt I bought at that show and still wear it sometimes despite the holes and faded colors. Last year at Bonnaroo, someone near my campsite was playing the Blue Album from their car and it made me so incredibly happy to sit there and listen to it before heading out to Centeroo. Though I do have mad love for Blue, Pinkerton will always be my favorite Weezer album. Lyrically, it's Rivers Cuomo at his absolute best. "Across the Sea" will always be my favorite Weezer song. I also really enjoy Green and Maladroit, but Make Believe, no thanks.
I was stoked when I heard Rivers was releasing a solo album, even though I already had most of SFTBH downloaded years ago, but it is nice to have a real CD of those rarities. "Blast Off" and "Longtime Sunshine" have always been personal favorites of mine. "Longtime Sunshine" is one of his most beautiful, introspective songs.
I really hope that album number six means that I will be able to see them live again.
My first weezer show was Jan 97 on the Pinkerton tour, at The Rave in Milwaukee (~800 capacity) with Matt still on bass and Nerf Herder opening the show. They played most of the blue album (minus Holiday/Only in Dreams) most of Pinkerton (not Falling For You) as well as Devotion and You Gave Your Love to Me Softly. Not just the best weezer show I've ever seen, but probably one of my top ten fave shows ever.
I used to email with Mykel & Carli back in the day, when my only income was babysitting my cousins and I was too cheap to join the official fanclub. I'd still have those messages, if it weren't for Hotmail and that stupid 30-day rule they implemented a decade after I signed up.
