Not to jinx us or anything *knocks on wood* but I dont think the cicadas are going to be a problem on the farm. We have lots of farms around here and they really stick to where there are lots of trees... think about it. Hopefully they'll stick to mating AFTER we've left their land...

I can't explain the anxiety I had over the damn cicada thread last year.. and then hearing them on my drive through Kentucky almost gave me a heart attack. I can't even imagine what I would've done if they swarmed the farm.
ooh, I found a vid I took. We were driving on the freeway with the windows up and the music on, and we could hear them through all that sound. When we figured out what the noise was, I almost puked. I took a short video when traffic was backed up. I had my window open just enough to record this because they kept flying toward the car. *shudder* It was SO MUCH louder than it seems. View My Video

im pretty sure was about 100 threads for this last year, and i think i saw couple cicadas in PA before i left, but not a single one at roo. (knock on wood)
Why do Magicicadas wait 17 years and why do they emerge in such large numbers? There are many theories why, but the primary reason could be that they’re trying to beat the predators. Since they emerge only once every 17 years, no species can anticipate their emergence (except man), and emerging in large numbers ensures that at least some of them will survive to reproduce. See more about Cicadas and Prime Numbers.

Catch them, batter them and then fry them. Add Old Bay for taste.
My dog loves cicada years. She will eat them all day long.
I imagine cicadas would be quite crunchy.
Here in Alabama I have not seen nor heard any so far this year. As time passes, whether I hear them or not, I feel quite sure I will happen upon one of their gnarly, primeval outer casings clinging to a tree or brick.
While it would indeed be a somewhat frightening experience, I think seeing a cicada, often colloquially called locust, swarm would be pretty cool.
How often does one have the opportunity to be intimately involved in epic-ness of Biblical proportions? Not often.
Once I was standing on a sidewalk and a literal cloud of bees swarmed toward and around me headed off somewhere I reckon to make honey for us to enjoy. Not one of them stung me. I was too big to eat.
Wikipedia says cicadas rarely harm humans unless they mistake you for a tree into which they stick their noses to get sap.
So...unless you are passed out from the heat or whatever during the possible impending and anxiety causing cicada storm...don't worry about it.

God I HATE those things! There not so bad in the pre-flying terror form. And I'm not bothered by their noise at all, but I do freak out when I see them because they have NO since of direction or control of their flight, and fly like damned kamikazes hopped up on meth. There is no more terrifying sound than a Cicada banging around in your car port.
I can't explain how terrified I am of cicadas. I was at the Nashville Flea Market and a cicada flew into my hair and started chirping like crazy. I FREAKED OUT! I don't remember them being as bad 13 years ago as they were last year. I was sooooo glad that I didn't see any at Roo last year

Roanoke Va is really bad in the summer. The damned things will just beam you in the dome peace and hit the ground. Then you just have to look at each other confused. It's an awkward moment for both bug and human.

last year waiting in line, wee hours of the morning, just trying to get a couple of minutes of sleep when all of a sudden WACK! cicada through the cracked window and into my hair. if anyone saw a girl leap from her car in a panic last year, that was me
;o ;o ;O ;O I have seen this happen twice in TN, has anyone heard of japanese hornets? they are about 2 inches long and dig holes in the ground to live in. They are not native to TN but live there now in the old growth forests in the eastern part of the state. Anyhew, they HATE Cicada bugs, I don't know if its the noise they make or if the bugs poach their food or if they like the taste. A hornet and a cicada fell from the treetops at least 30 feet and the hornet just starts stinging the pus out of this bug 4 times his size, It missed my girls head by an inch when they fell, And they fell into a beer box so it sounded like a small aircraft taking off. than this big toe sized hornet starts moweing down on the cicadas legs, ate them all off so it was still alive but couldn't move at all. It was the most brutal thing I've ever seen in nature. so I threw the poor guy in the fire so he wouldn't feel like that guy in the metallica video! about a half hour it happens again but they fall right on my friends head! hahaha well, thats what happened so if you see any 2'' yellow/orange hornets and hear cicadas doiing their thing LOOK OUT BELOW!!!
