OK, now that the 'big' announcement is out (my reaction: anything other than LZ is 'meh') I've been thinking.... Out of the three years I've gone to Roo I've only gone to a handful of the headliner shows anyway. That time slot is perfect for relaxin' and getting ready for the night ahead. I went back through the previous years' lineups and realized: '02 I saw Trey but skipped WP, Phil, AND SCI. '03 I went to the Dead but skipped Neil and JB. 06 It was Phil but not Radiohead or Tom Petty. What am I trying to say? There is SOOOOO much more to Bonnaroo than the headliners. Let the haters bash. The line-up is so deep and I'm so excited about everything OTHER THAN the headliners they could have announced Hansen for all I care.
I skipped the Dead on Sunday in 03 (had to be home that year). I also skipped DMB in 05.
Of the 18 headliners, those are the only 2 I've missed, though I will say I haven't seen the whole set for every headliner. The ones I saw partials of were Dave and Friends in 04, The Dead in 04, and WSP in 05.
edit:
Of those 16, I'd say Radiohead was far and away the best. Tool was just behind them, and Trey Anastasio in 02 takes 3rd.
I've only bothered to see Radiohead and Tool (I've never been able to see a Sunday headliner b/c my group has always had to leave that night for whatever reason). Bonnaroo is all about the awesome undercard. I say let other festivals have their big headliners, Bonnaroo always has the best lineup top to bottom.
Its going to be interesting when 5,000 people show up for the WSP headlining set on Sunday.
To be fair to Panic, they usually draw about half the Bonnaroo crowd. That being said, a large number of them always seem disinterested. At every one of the WSP shows from the last 3 years I noticed a large percentage of people who were just not into it. A lot of people just standing around talking, a lot of people passed out, a lot of people clearly more interested in the thing they just bought that lights up. I never really see a whole bunch of people that are really into the show.

I've thought the same thing, but now I realize that people get bored with the same stuff over and over again.

I've been every year and have seen very few of the headliners.
Saw Panic's sets w/ Houser in 02. First time I saw them, after 2 nights and 4 sets I was not too impressed but was glad I saw them w/ Houser since I knew he wasn't long for this world.
Saw Neil Young in 03. He was amazing.
Saw Radiohead and Petty in 06.
Saw Tool and the end of the Police last year.
That's it in 6 years. It's never been about the headliners for me.
I'll probably catch Pearl Jam this year and that's it.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

I've watched all the headliners since 03, didnt get to go the first year been every year since. Ive seen all the headliners and most have been great. WSP puts on a amazing show, the only shows i found lackluster were Young, The Police, and Dylan.

I always at least catch part of the headliners' sets. So that's 9 for me. It's not like there are other acts competing for my attention. And I'm excited about the addition of WSP and that they'll be closing out the show. I'd rather have the Allman Brothers there, but it's clear that Superfly had to scramble and this is what they came up with. I just hope they bring on other artists (like they did in '05).
In 4 Roos I've seen 2 headliners.Radiohead & Petty. This year I was planning on seeing PJ and now WSP. I usually reserve the headliners spot for napping. Not that many have grabbed my attention. Not bad.Just not my cup of tea.

Wow dude, you skipped Neil Young, Tom Petty, and Radiohead??? No offense meant, but if I were in your position I'd be kicking myself.
Last year I saw The Police and part of Tool, which didn't do much for me, so I wandered away.

Last year was my first Roo, and I saw some of Tool's show (but wasn't really paying attention at all and I'm pretty sure I left early) and most if not all of the Police. Didn't go to WSP at all.
This year I will probably see Pearl Jam, and I think I want to go to Metallica for about five minutes just so I can tell people I walked out...haha. I'm not planning to stay at Metallica, and I don't know about WSP but I very likely won't go to that one at all. Depends how exhausted we are by that point.

Petty and Radiohead were a cool part of what got me there in 06 Went to Phil, but was exahusted, then it started raining... went back to camp, drank beer till past out with Phil in the distance to send me off
Didn't care who headlined in 07, but was really excited for the chance to see the Police... and Tool surprised the f^ck out of me and surpassed my expectations by FAR... but after the stripes, i was exhausted, went back to camp, drank beer till passed out with Jammin' in the distance to send me off
This year, Pearl Jam, Metallica, two bands i wouldn't go out of my way seeing, but am VERY excited to see just the same... and I'm pretty much figuring Sunday night this year will be similar to every sunday night at Roo so far... drink beer at camp till passed out with jammin' in the distance to send me off to rest up for the trek home the next day... almost wouldn't want it any other way... and I can't freakin' wait!!! ;D
been 06 and 07 saw all of the headliners in 06 and all were great expecially radiohead 07 saw part of tool left to try n get good seats for superjam, slept listening to police for about 30 min before goin to get a good spot for the flips and saw all of wsp wich i enjoyed but was just soooo tired
04 - dave and friends, the dead, and the beginning of trey. 05 - dave mathews band and the beginning of widespread. 06 - tom petty and radiohead. 07 - tool and the police. presuming im alive 08 - pearl jam and metallica.
i can't say that i have a favorite show. the four that really stand out are dave and friends, tom petty, radiohead, and tool. all completely blew my mind.

Last year was my first at Roo, and well, I didn't see any of the headliners. I was at Tool for about 6 min. because we didn't go until after it had already started and I'm not really a "crowd fighter" unless its something I'm REALLY interested in... and Tool just isn't my style. Plus I was pretty pissed at some of my friends that night so I just went back to the campsite... what a night that was, haha... but thats a story for another time. Me and my friend tried to go to the Police's show, but after we got as close as we could, we decided we could actually hear it better from the camp. Don't ask how, I guess the crowd noise drowned out the music while we were close. As far as Panic is concerned, me and my friends thought it sounded amazing from the camp, but we decided to head home as we were all exhausted from our first Roo.

Been the last four years and haven't missed a headliner. Thought that 04 had the best three-some - Dave Matthews / Dead / Trey. The Phil & Friends set in 06 is probably my favorite. The two minor disappointments - Police and Petty, mostly because of short, by-the-numbers, sets. Not really a fan of but enjoyed alot - Radiohead and Tool.
Let me preface this by saying I tend to randomly nap throughout the day at Roo so I can't say if my sleeping though a number of the headliners is a reflection of that or the music itself:
04 Dave and Friends -- stayed awake. thought it was okay The Dead -- passed out mid-afternoon and woke up in the begining of Primus. (Rookie mistake) Trey -- stood around in a puddle watching the orchestra tune up. lasted about a song before deciding to hit the road.
05 Dave Matthews Band -- stayed awake and enjoyed my favorite headlining set Widespread Panic -- stayed but napped off and on WSP -- stayed but napped off and on
06 Tom Petty -- watched from a distance but stayed awake Radiohead -- stayed awake and worked my way pretty close to the front. still didn't understand what the hell they were singing. : ) Phil and Friends -- stayed for the first set, left in the rain and listened to the rest from my tent
07 Tool -- stayed but napped for a lot of it Police -- stayed and the set was so short I didn't have time to fall asleep WSP -- stayed and napped
08 (Prediction) Metallica -- will stay and stay awake (mostly) Pearl Jam -- will stay and pay attention WSP -- will stay but fall asleep during the first song (aka, sometime during the first hour of their set)
(It should be noted that my evening naps leave me enough energy to stay in Centeroo until the sun comes up so I'm okay with that tradeoff!!!!)

um headliners what are those???
i sat at my tent and listened to petty in '06, watched most of radiohead and didn't see a second of phil.
last year i would rather eat glass than watch tool cause they make awful music now but that's my opinion i know other love them but i was set up for superjam, the police i was able to hear while i sat in front of the which stage watching the flaming lips play war pigs and then left half way though to watch gov't mule which was mind blowing and sunday i walked around drinking listening to panic and i have to say their take on faries wear boots was great. this year i'm very excited to watch pj especially now that jack will be on before them since i think that will make both there sets epic, metalica is a bunch of butth*les but they did play well live especially with covers they play and i think with les coming he is gonna come out and play master of puppets with them as friday is typically the night that guests come out on the what stage and sunday i'm sure i'll be walking around drinking listening to panic again. i love these 4 days of the year it's my christmas, birthday, kwanza, new years and great guinness toast all in one!!! i just like to be told to wake up by the hot sun watch tons of bands, observe a bunch of nut cases running around a field and not think about anything that isn't tight in front of me.
05 Dave Matthews Band - saw the entire set, great stuff WSP - saw the entire set, thought it was awesome WSP - saw all of the set, good, but would have rathered someone else in their slot
06 Tom Petty - saw the whole set, not bad, thought he was kinda just going through the motions Radiohead - saw the entire set, blew me out of the water (mainly b/c I went in as a person simply vaguely familiar with their music with low expectations) Phil Lesh - saw 1st half, unfortunately had to leave due to school conflicts (had to be at a test Monday morning at 9 a.m.), but 1st half was awesome
07 Tool - saw the entire set, fantastic show The Police - thought I was leaving about halfway through the show, turned out to be towards the end, nonetheless I got to see FLips do War Pigs, blah to the Police show as well WSP - first time seeing Jimmy Herring, that guy is freakin nuts, he makes them an entirely new band in my opinion, saw the whole set btw
lookin back on it, I seem to make nearly the entire sets of most of these. Don't get me wrong, I still have my energy for my late night sets!
