You may have noticed the "Bonnaroo Physical Training" thread on this forum, however, I got to thinking the other day of the various other kinds of training necessary to be in top shape for Bonnaroo. I realized that I hadn't listened to several 'roo artists in a long time and decided to get reacquainted with their material in order to prepare myself for their sets. The unfortunate part of this is that it is making me extremely impatient to see these bands.
What cd's/shows/etc. have you pulled out of your musical closet or recently attained to get yourself ready? Yesterday I downloaded the entire Broken Social Scene discography to prepare for their set-- I had the 2005 album and Feel Good Lost, but I thought this would be a good opportunity to check out everything else.
I also picked Z back up (MMJ) (I had to set it down for awhile after I got myself nearly sick of it when it first came out) and reminded myself how incredible insane that set is going to be.
So, what all have you been listening to lately to get yourself ready?
Watchin' a stretch of road, miles of light explode. Driftin' off a thing I'd never done before. Watchin' a crowd roll in. Out go the lights it begins. A feelin' in my bones I've never felt before...

Hadn't given much thought to seeing Lez Zeppelin. But, on the drive to work Friday morning, I heard them live in the studio on WTGB, out of Silver Spring, MD. The band performed a very moving acoustic "That's the Way." The version was a *much* better arrangement than what's available on You Tube.
Today (Sunday) there's an Earth Day free concert on the National Mall, in D.C. Scheduled are performances by The Roots & Friends, O.A.R., Gov’t Mule, Toots & the Maytals, Thievery Corporation, Warren Haynes solo acoustic, Umphrey’s McGee and others. Still trying to get my son's lazy ass out of the bed to enjoy some musical civil pride.
Then there's Radio Bonnaroo, played soft and low while I'm reading before bed...

I made a playlist of all the Bonnaroo acts from this year and it has over 1000 songs. I put that on and press play. Also Los Lonely Boys plays for free at the Green Apple Festival in Dallas, I will check that out later. Dr. John played a free show last night in Fort Worth, but i was on my way and someone pulled out in front of me to drive across the road and I hit them. No way to avoid that. No airbags at least. Whatever, Its corncat's birthday.

Yikes! Sorry about your accident, ride. . . that's a bit of a buzz kill.
Is your playlist on iTunes, or do you have it set up through something else? That's a heck of a playlist. . .
This morning, I downloaded a bunch of live MMJ-- acoustic and otherwise, to get ready. I'm finding, however, that this "training" is making me more anxious than prepared. . .

I'm still kind of laying off digging too deep into new stuff until the schedule comes out. In the past I've gotten acquainted with new artists and become super-psyched -- only to find out that I'm in major conflict mode once the schedule comes out.
I've already got about twenty-five artists that I'm excited to check out. I'll fill in the blanks once I know what they are.
What I've been doing is going to YouTube and checking out a handful of songs of each artist/band that I'm not so familiar with, so I can have a better idea of what shows might appeal to me. The bands I do know, I refresh my memory on their songs. Oh, and I also skim-read some of the Wikipedia pages. I know, I'm a total dork, but I'm so excited I can't help it. I feel like a little kid looking forward to my birthday. It's helped me discover a few acts that I'm now looking forward to. I've really been trying to appreciate Metallica more. I saw a video of a live performance of Nothing Else Matters that got me somewhat excited, and I like One, Enter Sandman and a few other songs, but most of it just isn't my thing. Hopefully they'll realize that they're not exactly everyone's cup of tea at Bonnaroo and cater more towards the crowd, at least for an hour or so - shout a bit less, do a few songs on the acoustic guitar, etc. I'm not even hating on Metallica, either; I think they're a really good band for their genre. I'm just not all that into metal, but I do realize their talent and accomplishments as musicians. Of course, there's now a list of must-see acts and should-see acts (as well as a handful of acts that really just don't appeal to me at all), but I'll probably forget some by the time I'm standing in the middle of a farm in the Tennessee sun/moonlight, with my brain feeling fried from all the heat/having been up all day, or perhaps as a result of any other chemical imbalance . I'm going to make sure I see a bunch of musicians I know little-to-nothing about, too. I went to a day fest a few years back, and one of the best shows I saw there was this DJ I'd never heard of in the rave tent - DJ Dan, but I figured he must be good to be sandwiched between Timo Maas and Paul Oakenfold on the bill. I was right. On a side note, I have a total bonna-n00b question: when do they release the official schedule? I want to work out how my weekend is going to unfold already!

It shouldn't be that long until they release the schedule. Probably the second or third week in May. Jambase will have a customizable and printable schedule that you will probably lose on thursday afternoon or won't follow it anyway. As much of a type A plus OCD guy that I am, the chaos that is bonnaroo kinda sweeps even me away. Don't try to fight it. Just pick a handful of shows that you can't miss, and wander around the rest of the time and let cool things happen to you.

Oh, believe me, I won't be. I'm not type A at all and only OCD about a handful of small things - usually I have a very laid-back, 'go with the flow' mentality. "It's Friday afternoon, and a few people have said I should check out State Radio over Jose Gonzalez? Why not?" I have about five or so must-see acts who aren't headliners, the rest of the time I'll mostly be playing it by ear, so to speak.

Yeah, total lol @ trying to keep a schedule. The first year I went I had a schedule all planned out and set, and followed basically none of it. Best bet is just to pick your must-see's, then go with the flow otherwise.
it's a great place to stream new music. it's 100% free and you can access your saved playlist, favorites, etc on any computer. I've been checking out a lot of new acts that will be at Bonnaroo and if you find something you like enough then you can buy it.

I've been listening to Gogol nonstop lately though..
I need to get some of their stuff--I just watched Everything is Illuminated and was talking about how cool the character of Alex was--someone had asked me if I had heard his band. . . had *no* idea he had a band, let alone that I'd be seeing them soon. . . .any recommendations?

You can download a live gogol set along with some krauss and plant a bjork concert and other stuff from NPR's podcast site. feed://www.npr.org/rss/podcast.php?id=510019 My music collection is now almost a month worth of music. It might take a while to listen to it all. Edit: Also Iron & Wine, Jose Gonzalez, Andrew Bird, Death Cab, Explosions in the Sky, Arcade Fire and Rilo Kiley Live concerts in there, all good quality.
I'm trying to scale back my Rilo Kiley listening. I'm seeing them June 1 as well, and don't want to get burnt out. Same with BSS, the ticket for which I bought before the Roo lineup even came out. May 20, woot!
Like cdevaney said, once the schedule comes out I'll probably start looking into some new stuff, to fill out my time if need be. I did just grab the Afromotive cd on emusic though, and it's badass.

Wow, I didn't know that!!!! I've been listening to a lot of Gogol lately, too. (on a side note, "Everything is Illuminated" is an incredible movie) What an awesome connection.
I've pulled out some Rilo Kiley, Broken Social Scene and Pearl Jam to get ready for Roo, as well as familiarizing myself with artists I didn't know before the lineup was released. Two Gallants is now on my "must-see" list.
