It is wonderful to see a diversified lineup, and branching out is good, but wouldn't some other artists have been a better direction to branch out to...?
Instead of Kanye and Metallica, how about Matchbox 20 and Barenaked Ladies?
Instead of Kanye and Metallica, how about Jason Mraz and SOJA?
Instead of Kanye and Metallica, how about Strive Roots and Robbie Williams?
Instead of Kanye and Metallica, how about Lauren Hill and Beastie Boys?
Instead of Kanye and Metallica, how about A Tribe Called Quest and Digital Underground?
Branching out is fantastic....but at least head in a groovy direction....
To be honest, I think SOJA (http://www.sojamusic.com/soja/) would have been the best addition to this festival.
We all know diversity is beautiful (and the only way we can progress, learn, grow, expand, and be one).
But in some instances, diversity can be narrowed to a select few of truly, honest, love-filled musicians...
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
Well.... I love Metallica's old stuff (insert everything that's been said of Metallica in a positive manner), and, still, could give a rat's behind about Kanye.
But there are two bands I wish Bonnaroo would get that would diversify their status, and give them a new level of music "cred";
Aphex Twin: Those who know, I don't need to say any more. Those who don't; "Selected Ambient Works vol 1". I mean, Coachella's got em, and we've (basically) had the same type of electronic EVERY YEAR. Aphex Twin would open the floodgates for electro at Roo, unlike any other act could.
Legendary Pink Dots: I know not many people know of this band, but they are really, really something special. They are trippy enough, jammy enough, "progressive" enough, and "indie" enough to get a low profile tent slot. Around since the late 70s/early 80s, they are the original post-psychedelia group; eclectic yet identifiable, experimental yet accessible, I don't understand why Roo doesn't try to set up something with this AMAZING group.
INSTEAD of Kanye and Metallica?
Probably, Wu Tang and King Crimson, being respective to genre.

Big Bishop Tyrone -- Thank you for throwing in Wu, which is my favorite hip hop act (all the way back to 36 ch. and gavediggaz 6ft deep). I didn't want to add them to my initial post because I thought they may be a little too much for some folks. But you are correct, they would fulfill more of the Bonnaroo vibe than Metallica and Kanye. Thank you for introducing me to Aphex Twin and Legendary Pink Dots.
I have to be honest, Metallica would have been near the top of acts that I'd want to see, especially in this type of venue. They've been one of my favorite bands for a long time (based completely on their first 5 albums and S&M) and Ive somehow missed them on every tour theyve had. They probably would not have been my top choice though.
Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin would be my absolute choices, but if we're talking about realistically? Hmm...realistic headliner choices to replace Metallica and Kanye. Actually, Kanye isnt really a headliner, so I'll do a Headliner and sub-headliner or late night.
My favorite groups big enough to headline and still alive and not hating each other are probably Tool (who I've seen 4 times) and Black Sabbath (who I've seen 3 times). I'd probably rather have someone Id not seen. Or at least not that much.
I would say the Mars Volta, but thats not really 'branching' out, because they've played Bonnaroo before. Thats another thing to think about.
I'd probably say...A Perfect Circle as a headliner. They'd probably never get booked as a headliner, but they deserve it, IMO. They could put on as good a set as any headliner. certainly at least more satisfying than The Police or Widespread Panic.
My 2nd would either be Dashboard Confessional (Chris solo) as a day, pre-headliner set. or Opeth as a late night set. I'd kill to see either, and I believe that both would be fantastic additions, even though the majority of the Roo population would generally hate either.

I find it funny that these two are often put together, as I hate Metallica and love Kanye. I would literally pick most anyone over Metallica though. Let's say, to throw a random big-name out there, Bruce Springsteen. Or, for a more similar sound, how about Rammstein?
Man, I would definitely take Mraz. He's got a new record coming out which by many accounts is more in the vein of his old acoustic, better vibe than the last record, which was kind of a disappointment. He's got about 13,000 songs to choose from, he's been here before... could have been a good addition.
I'm checking out SOJA right now, and I dig. Thanks, man.

I really would like to see Robbie Williams there. If you think he's just a cheesy pop star, you don't know enough about him. I'm not a huge fan, but my best friend loves him, and from what he's told me, Robbie Williams is a pretty crazy dude.
I'd also like to see Slayer there. I never would have seriously suggested that before, but now that we have Metallica and Mastodon...I would take Slayer over both (especially over Metallica).
So yeah, Robbie Williams and Slayer. I don't think either could pull off a headliner slot, though...so as a replacement for Metallica, I'd go with Sabbath.

I've seen both Kanye and the Beastie Boys, and I'd take the Beasties any day. Not that I didn't have a good time at the Kanye show, I just had far more fun with the Beasties. Going out of genre, but still a good headliner that would be a big draw and hasn't already played roo, I'd rather see Bjork than Metallica.

ok so i for one have no problem with kanye or metallica even though i do hate the later name but will give them credit for playing well live. for some of the bands suggested in the first post i know you just threw up some names but the violent femmes couldn't play as they broke up in october but i am shocked they never played the farm, cypress hill has already played once and repeat hip hop artists don't seem to happen at roo. good suggestions though. however just to play along if i had to pick two replacements for them i would have picked nas performing his new record nigger and down.

i just got this thought, and i mean i just ate some really good corn but its still a good thought....
What if Bonnaroo is just trying to say "We can have Metallica headline and have widespread panic play every year and we will still be the best festival of the summer" ?
well, I think you're trying trying to say theyre the best festival DESPITE having Metallica. I would argue they're the best festival BECAUSE they have Metallica (among many other reasons).
I really think their set will change a lot of the minds that are open enough to actually check out their set.

not to single you out, but I keep seeing statements like this and I really don't get it. Its not like people on this board have never heard of Metallica or havent gotten a chance to listen to them, I for one do not like the music Metallica makes, seeing them play that music live is not going to do anything to change that and I think a lot of other people feel the same way.

Jane's Addiction would be awesome and Morcheeba. I think Metallica will be pretty cool to see but I could def think of someone way better for Kanye. Mudcrutch is back together and a tour that includes Bonnaroo could be awesome.
Instead of Kanye I'd rather have... Kanye. (I want Bonnaroo to be the biggest festival in the world, and by booking the biggest current hip-hop act, I think this pushes them in the right direction).
Instead of Metallica I'd rather have... R.E.M. or Bruce Springsteen. I think both R.E.M. and The Boss fit the vibes of Bonnaroo so much better than Metallica and are far more influential on the rest of the lineup that Bonnaroo tends to book (which ultimately allows for a lot of very cool collabo possibilities).

I guess the only question for you is do you like huggies or pampers? You sound like a little baby with your crying and gripping. Awww does the baby need a diaper change. I feel real sorry for those of you who dont catch the Metallica set because your want to play beerpong. You guys sound just like my ten year old nephew, things didnt go his way so he cried and complained and missed the whole trip. Come down off your pedestal and have a great time or just be that little kid watching everybody else party and having a great time wishing he could do the same.
I really think their set will change a lot of the minds that are open enough to actually check out their set.

I understand that many people just don't like their music, but given the opportunity to see them perform, (and from what I've seen, they put on amazing performances) I think that could change a lot of peoples minds about being so negative toward them and their music. Listening to a cd is a completely different experience than seeing the music come to life right before your eyes.
what constitutes an amazing performance is relative tho, for me its seeing some music that I enjoy listening to and seeing it played exceptionally well. Look I was never a big Tool fan but I went to see Tool last year and I had to leave half way thru. apparently it was an amazing Tool Performance, yet I still am not a Tool fan. edit: I did thoroughly enjoy their lasers tho.
