I've been looking for a shade tent for quite a while. I went to some local stores and haven't found what I'm looking for. Do any Rooers have any suggestions?
Does anyone have any suggestions on specific shade tents? I'm not too worried about the price because shade is priceless at Roo, but I don't want to overpay, especially for something on Ebay that I can't touch and feel before I buy.
Just search EZ up with Google and you'll get lots of hots cheaper than that. Most are $100-$150 for a 10x10. I got mine on sale for $40 each last Spring
Unless that $230 one is something special, I continue to look locally at Traget, Dick's Sporting Good, Kmart, Tractor Supply or any camping place.
This word also has a underground meaning once you break it down. Let’s take “Bonn” for example and it actually turns into the word “Bone”. We all know gays use this word to describe the action of when they are fecal fisting their Cuban cabana boy at their sex bath house parties. Now let’s look at Roo, “Roo” is short for “Kangaroo”.So put the full true message together and you get“Bone a Kangaroo
that looks pretty good. i might have that one, or the one just like it from Target
just make sure you get the "EZ-up" style of shade. the one that you have to put together is a joke, at best. the poles are too thin, and bend. it doesn't stand up to even light winds for 3 minutes in the front yard 100% sober, let alone at ROO
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
The really cheap walmart canopies are crap. You'd be better off with a cardboard box.
If money is real tight you can find the cheap ones that need assembly for about $30 but make sure they are the ones where the fabric goes all the way down the legs. I used these the first couple years and they did fine except during the monsoon. They are definitely harder to set up and not as strong.
Here's a picture of what I mean by fabric going down the leg. Notice it does not have the cross-bracing for strength
I got one at Sports Authority for about $60 last year. It was an off-brand, but the sales guy said his daughter was going to 'Roo and that's what he got for her. It was perfect for us. I'll try to find out what it was, its at my parents' house. I don't know how great it would hold up in wind & rain but it seems rather sturdy, so you don't have to pay a billion for a good shade tent... but probably more than $15
Yeah, my friend and I go ours from Sports Authority for about $50 as well. It worked great for us last year. Easy to set up and take down and was great for protecting us from the hot Tennessee sun. I'm sure you can get one on sale if you check the paper every sunday for ads!
I got a 12x12 EZup one at Dicks last Friday for 79.99, and took it to a corn fest this weekend. It held up very well and was much bigger than expected. We had on and off rain, and moderate 10-20 mph wind, but we had to anchor it in loose sand. It never really even moved.

Thanks a lot all. We don't have stores like Target, Dick's Sporting Good etc., although I'll keep looking around. Now that's it's almost camping season maybe there may be a few more out there then back in March when I was looking for one.
Thanks for the suggestions on using blankets; I was under the impression I needed to buy side walls.

I bought a shade tent from REI.COM it was $25 on sale but it is a assembly required tent. You guys are getting me worried now. It also has 5 legs (one in the center) I really hope it will hold up

I guess the best thing to do is probably set it up and wait for some strong wind or rain. That's what I did with my tent last year. I waterproofed it, and kept it in the backyard for a couple of weeks. It got windy a few nights and got some rain. 2 weeks later the tent was dry inside and didn't move. Doing that I knew it was Rooworthy : )

careful with that. i got a similar one from Walmart.. 4 corner legs, one in the center, with some guy lines to steady it.. it didn't last 10 minutes when my dad and i put it up. i'm just gunna splurge and get an EZ-UP
The issue with the cheap canopies with the center pole is getting them to stand up. I have a cheap, easy fix for that. I would still recommend a better canopy if you can afford one, but the cheapies are much better than NO shade.
Get some PVC pipe just large enough to slip the canopy poles inside. Cut the PVC into 16 inch sections with one end at a 45 degree angle. Drive the stakes into the ground where you would like to place the canopy poles. The ground at Roo is very hard, but I managed to get them in about 6 inches. Slip the canopy poles inside the PVC and stake them down with the guy lines. This will help keep the poles upright.

We have had this one for several years now:
And we've been very happy with it. The screened walls are nice because they add a layer of protection from bugs. It's pretty easy to put up, although it helps to have at least two people, one of whom is relatively tall. It stakes into the ground just like a regular tent, and it's pretty sturdy. The picture kind of looks like it has a floor, but it does not. We usually lay down a tarp. I think this year (at Rothbury cuz we're skipping Roo), we are going to get some light fabric wall-hanging type things to tie to the sides to add an extra layer of privacy and protection from the sun.

Hi Everybody,
I just started posting today. Walmart has a Coleman shade tent on sale that is normally $120.00 for $70.00. It has great reviews on Amazon and on Walmart.com
Bought a 10'x10' at K-Mart for $59---Set it up and seems to be pretty sturdy, as well as easy to set up. Comes with a side curtain too. BTW...this is my first post, but have been taking in all the info from this site for my first trip to the Roo! ;D
You know, the more I look at shade tents, the more I start to think that they can be used rather than a tent as a primary source of shelter. Set up a few cots underneath, drop the walls down (like in the OP's link), and you'd be set. Yeah, you'd have to waterproof it somehow, as rain would probably be able to get inside through the "walls", but I'm sure you could rig something up.
If you're buying camping equipment for the first time, it may be a more sensible economic decision to splurge a bit on a Shade tent that could double as your sleeping quarters, rather than buying both a tent and a shade canopy.
I dunno, I could be talking out of my ass. What do you guys think?
