You know, the more I look at shade tents, the more I start to think that they can be used rather than a tent as a primary source of shelter. Set up a few cots underneath, drop the walls down (like in the OP's link), and you'd be set. Yeah, you'd have to waterproof it somehow, as rain would probably be able to get inside through the "walls", but I'm sure you could rig something up.
If you're buying camping equipment for the first time, it may be a more sensible economic decision to splurge a bit on a Shade tent that could double as your sleeping quarters, rather than buying both a tent and a shade canopy.
I dunno, I could be talking out of my ass. What do you guys think?
This has been discussed in several other threads but...
I've been to 5 Roos and never slept in a tent. I used a cot the first 3 years and a hammock since then. Even in '03 when it rained at night, I'd just have to move my cot if the wind shifted. It's much cooler, which was great those first couple HOT years but a bit chilly these last couple years when it's been less humid and so cooler at night.
(for some reason the link isn't working--try cutting and pasting if you'd like to see it) for less than $40.
I set it up in the backyard with no problem (and it's super windy today, too). It's Great! It's quite sunny out today, and with the sides zipped, it blocks a lot of the light, plus allows a great breeze through. I'm in love with it-- I've decided I'm not going to bring a sleeping tent because of it-- I'll just set the shade tent up right behind my bus and sleep in the back of the bus.

So in other words, it's not a terrible idea, and it could actually work?

I totally agree with you. I am planning on sleeping under my shade tent on a zero gravity chair. I figured that if it does rain I'll just sleep in the car. I think it would be the coolest way to sleep temperature wise.

last year on saturday night/morning from like...630am-930am i slept in our closed in shade tent til it got too hot and went into our RV. it was nice...the closed in aspect of it part made it even better

thats almost what i did last year. instead of a cot i had a "ottoman" folding chair with a footrest. i'd sleep in the tent when it was cold at night and once it got too hot in the morning i'd get out of the tent and sleep on the "ottoman". might not work so good for someone with back issues. you can find those chairs at walmart for less than $30 or splurge and pay more for the ones with extra padding.
another thing to remember when buying an ezup style shade tent is that they measure those things at the base. so if you're buying one thats 10x10 with ANGLED legs the canopy size is only 8x8. that adds up to 36 sq ft less than a 10x10 with straight upright rails.
Do people bring regular tents and shade tents? If so, what is the advantage? This is our first time camping at the 'Roo, but we're flying in so the less stuff we carry the better.

regular tent - to sleep in at night
shade tent - to sit under when its sweltering/napping during the day. its way too hot to sleep in your tent past 9am ish usually.. .

Walmart has an ozark trail shade tent(~$40) with a screen. reviews say it doesnt hold up well in rain but last year my group had like 3 that we put in a row to make a living area. I thought it worked wonderfully and will be using it again this year.

Shade is a necessity! We didn't bring one last year either, but luckily we had really nice neighbors that shared with us cause we would have been miserable!
It is a bit pricey at about $150. I am flying in and the 15 pound weight was a big selling point.
I got a huge EZ Up last year and didn't want to cart it back on the plane Monday morning when I was hung over. I could not even get the stakes out of the ground and was late for the shittle so I just left it (right next to Camp Inforoo) so hopefully someone from the board got a nice shade tent for free out of it!
I found a Coleman Geosport at BigLots for 50 bucks. I know others have mentioned that they picked them up there as well. Try all the discount places first like BigLots.
Speaking of leaving my shade tent in Tent Only, I am sure the people that clean up the campgrounds make a killing selling stuff that people left behind on eBay. That shade tent was basically brand new I am sure they could have got $100 for it easy after shipping...

Thanks for the info! Ive been looking at this one at walmart for $70. After I read your post I went to my local Big Lots and picked one up for $50. It was the last one they had! Karma for you ;D
i have a 10x10 quickshade (actually an 8x8 because of the angled legs) and it weighs 37lbs according to the box. i'd rather have the 12x12 but since i'm flying in i was worried it would be too large/heavy and the airline would charge me extra. i'm already peeved that as of may 1st they (northwest/compass) only allow ONE checked bag and you have to pay an extra $25 (each way) for a second bag and $100 (each way!) for a third.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago and had it set up in my backyard (aka "The Wind Tunnel") for over a week through several gnarly storms. At first I tried it out with out the guy lines, but the wind took one side down without them. Once I had the lines down and secured with *real* stakes, it held up like a champ.
I'm really happy with this tent and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap tent. It's good looking *and* it holds up well. The screens block out sun and bugs really well, too.
