Hello all,
So this is my first roo... and trust me, I've been reading all the guides and threads on this board religiously. I'm so excited to dance my ass off at every show I go to. Woo!
But...
There's one issue I'm still not clear on. The money. I've paid off my ticket, and I realize what I'm going to need to take to pay my share of the gas... but, what about once I get there? I've heard cash is key because the ATM's are pretty unreliable. Where did you keep it safe? And how much did you bring/spend? I'm working on farm up until roo, and I'm not going to be making that much money, so I'm worried I won't have much to spend on the goodies... if you catch my drift. But also on vendors, t-shirts and junk.
So how did you all figure it out? What did you bring for cash your first roo? Too much, too little? For you veterans out there, what have you found is the perfect amount for you?
This can really vary. I have gone and spent nothing and have gone and spent up to $400.
If you're gonna buy all your meal, I'd allot a couple hundred. I'd also allot a couple hundred for goodies, varying that based on your taste and appetite. And then another hundred for souvenirs, once again varying that on if you like to buy a lot or not.
$500-$600 should get you through if you are average and want to make sure you don't run short. You can go on MUCH less if you bring your own food and don't buy many souvenirs.
In '03 I spent nothing except about $100 on goodies.
I usually just carry my money with me or occassionally lock it in my glove box in the car.
BTW there are some older threads out there about this if you search a ways back you may find one.

I typically try to bring atleast $350 in spending money for food/souvenirs/fun. At Bonnaroo last year this was plenty of money for me, at Langerado I ran out on Sunday morning. All depends on how much fun you want to have....
And I always just keep my money in my wallet. I've never heard an instance of pickpocketing at the Roo, altho I'm sure it has happened once or twice. Pretty uncommon though
We're going to try to bring way more food this year, and since we're gonna be in Tent Only, it will hopefully be easier to go back to camp to eat. So I'm thinking about $20 a day (so $80 total) for snacks/beverages in Centeroo, $100 for the whole week as far as other treats go (but some people might need much more than that), and then another $80 or so for souvenirs. But I will probably spend around $400 on supplies, food and the like before we actually go. Gas... I'll be going from Nashville to Manchester so hopefully it won't be more than a tank but we'll see.

Just to give everyone a sort of insight... most meals you buy from vendors will run about $6 or $7. And by meals, I mean a slice of pizza or a quesadilla. Overpriced but delicious.
Go for the $1 grilled cheeses if you can find them ;D
I bring about $100-$200 per day in cash. Why? Centeroo:$5 juices $5 beers $5 coffees $10 mega burritos $$$water, $$$ venders.... In the lot: Shirt $20, $20-$30Glass for corn, (many many many) 2 for $5 beers, and all the rest goes for whatever I can get my hands on.
Also, I keep my extra cash in the car locked in the glovebox.... or locked in my tent at the bottom of the last place anyone would look.

I love those grilled cheeses I lived on those last year....I only brought about 200, but we carried plenty of food and water, ran a little low on the party favor fund but we still had a blast.
The food and drinks you can get on "Fakedown" were definitely better priced... $1 breakfast burritos, grilled cheese, and plenty of affordable adult beverages. But once you're in Centeroo, you're probably not going to want to leave just to get a grilled cheese... it'd take too long and you'd probably miss something. So then you are stuck getting $4 slices of pizza.
As far as souvenirs go, I prefer to get the offish ones anyway, and they run about $25-30 dollars. I wear my shirt from last year all the time though (the girlie fit grey one) so I think it was worth it.

I think generally, the amount of money you will spend is exactly equal to the amount of money you bring with you.
That is, if you don't have a lot (or want to spend it) you don't need a lot, especially if you're going to bring lots of food. If it's not a big issue for you and you bring lots, you'll end up with more snacks, more party favors, and more souvenirs.
I think last year I spent less than $100 there, and I'm thinking it was more like $60 ish. I bought a t-shirt (the same one herecomesthesun mentioned, actually!) and a few meals and a few bottles of water and frozen lemonades and such. (By the way, when it's about 90 degrees and you're sitting in the sun for a while, a frozen lemonade is THE BEST THING EVER.) Oh, and I forgot ice - my friends usually went to buy it so I guess I just paid them back for my share at the end of the trip, I don't remember how much that might have been. This year I really want to be able to buy more souvenirs, and I'm also planning to bring less food and buy more, so I'll be spending more money as long as I have it to spend!

i'm bringing however much i save up from now until Roo I don't want to have to be worrying about what I spend and how much I have left, so I'm going to bring as much as I can. I guess the maximum would be $500. As of now I've got $250, so i'll be set as long as I don't cut into my funds for anything
I am staying in VIP and should have about 800 for the 4 days I am there. That is not couting gas and food on the way and back. It is my vacation for the summer and I really like to enjoy myself. I do not bring hardly any food with me and about 2-3 cases of beer, some water and juices, energy drinks. I like to have a good time so it probably is too much but what the hell I work hard and have a good career so that is my justification.
Really I didn't spend that much on food last year. I brought snacks, like beef jerky, chips, frozen fruits cups, pb &j, and when I was hungry in Centeroo or on the way there, I bought something. Most of the time it was too hot to eat a big meal. Pizza was the main thing I bought and it did the trick when I was hungry.
We ate most of our meals in centeroo and bought a few take home goodies. Didn't eat much during the day because of the heat. I think we spent around 500.00 for the weekend. I will bring a bit more this year. I'm not including any of the money I spent on gas or stuff I bought on the way down.
"I want you to notice When I'm not around You're so fücking special I wish I was special But I'm a creep I'm a weirdo What the hell am I doing here? I don't belong here" -Radiohead
“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” -Benjamin Franklin
Has anyone ever kept track how much they spent on gas?
depends on what you're driving really. when i drive from florida to NY, it's a 16 hour trip and i'll stop around 3 times for gas, at $25 a pop. That's probably be $32 now, so in total it'd be about $96 or so. I know from NY to TN is a 14 hour trip, so it'd be about the same price, $96 one way. But I'm also driving a Toyota Prius.
I don't know about tent only, but I do know that the past years I've been at roo our campsite has been hit each year. If you have valuables, lock them in a car - especially money. I leave my extra cash in the car and carry what I think I might need - nothing of any value in my tent.
Now, if the first statement makes you all worried about keeping your stuff safe relax. I love roo because I really do think it is a safe place where people get along. Don't leave things open and easy to get at and your stuff will be fine. NEXT, as for money, I don't see any comments about how great your neighbors will be.
If you are outgoing and fun you will find that lots of people around you will have extra food. If you have things to share it comes back in spades. What you share is up to you. I threw and extra small table and some chairs in my truck one year and kept getting cold beer, cooked burgers and even eggs and bacon one morning given to me. Even bringing extra trash bags or offering to take people recyclables to a collection point goes a long way.
Don't spend limited money on food you have to cook. Bring packages of tuna, canned fruit, water, peanut butter, etc. to live simply. Spend $15 a day for a good 1.5 meals. Then how many $5 beers you buy is up to you. The head does limit what you want to eat during the heat of the day. Then, when it is night and you have cravings.... don't eat in Centeroo (or buy an ice cream bar for $2) eat food outside Centeroo.
Also, on Sunday night feast from the vendors near the WHAT stage. The people I go with play a game "how much food for a $1". Basically, those vendors are closing down and need to leave. So, we see how much food they will "unload" for a dollar. Fun game and you would be amazed at the deals. Again, that is Sunday night.....
I have left the house with $200 in cash the past two years. No problem using just that cash for food and junk to take home. If you are smart you can purchase other necessities for the weekend and share with those you are with - your contribution probably won't cost you more than $100. You can double that if you like but there are only so many hours in roo....
Lastly, if you are coming with a group (more than two cars) you can save a ton of money if you all plan on what the group will contribute. We had 38 cars in our group last year (about 70 people) and the sharing was out of this world and kept costs for everyone low.
You can do roo on a budget and be happy. Like someone said, bring what you have and that will be plenty!

I'm gonna be taking about $1500-2000 for 10 days in America (including Roo) and seeing as that'll only be about £1000 it wont be an issue. Gonna be on holiday and want to have enough money to do everything i want and buy everything i want .x
my wife and I took $500 between us last year (on top of our VIP expenses) for drinks and food outside the VIP area, t-shirts, and anything else that suits our fancy.
we kept $50 on each of us and left the rest locked in a safe place inside the car.
we spent about half of it, if i remember correctly, but it was nice to know that we had enough to cover anything that we would want or need throughout the weekend.
I'm tryin' ta bring about $500+ this year for regular expenses plus various goodies. Last year I had about the same to split between 'Roo and a week at the Outer Banks following the fest afterwards and I think (not sure) I spent about half at 'Roo and had a great time, but I'd also brought in my of my own food supplies.

Yes... do not forget to plan that post Roo trip to Waffle House in your budget. Definitely worth saving that $10 rather than spending it on the farm
