what material are tents made of? I have an Ozark Trail tent and I want to water proof it but the can I bought says it is good for tents but says do not use on vinyl. Are tents made of vinyl? I'm so confused what do you guys use to waterproof your tents?
Is your tent actually leaking? A new tent should already be waterproof and not need any additional treatment. If you're getting wet inside the most common causes are (a) condensation due to inadequate ventilation (your own breath moisture) and (b) setting up so that the inner skin is touching the outer fly - water will pour in at the contact point.
Of course if your tent is old and all the waterproofing is peeling off, then you've probably got the right stuff.

As stated before, most tents use two layers for weather protection.
The rain fly is the more waterproof material and is designed to shed the water away from the main tent material.
There are full coverage rain flies and partial rain flies. The full coverage provides more protection. The nylon material of the tent is not generally waterproof, thus if in direct contact with water, it can leak.
You may want to use a seam sealer on the floor of the tent and as one would guess on the seams. The stitching is a place that water can enter.
