So I've been thinking about getting dreads for a while now. I've read a lot of info online about them, and I think I'm going to get my friends to do them for me. The only real thing that's holding me back is the fact that I might have to cut my hair extremely short when I no longer want them. I have shaved my head once before and got a little aggravated at how long it took my hair to grow back. Does anyone have any personal experience and/or advice to share about their dreads? Anything would be appreciated! Thanks

i had a gf get dreads back in college. hers looked a bit weird at first because her hair was so short once it was all twisted up, but she really liked them. she ended up having to cut her hair because she had to get a job, though.
i think you'd look super cute with them! and living in austin, there are plenty of jobs you could get if you needed to that would be fine with dreads
Thanks! How short was her hair to begin with? Do you think I should let mine grow out more? I may wait until like halfway through summer so my hair can get a little longer....

i think her hair may have been an inch shorter than yours or so. made the dreads not lay down really, so it looked kinda funny for a bit.
it may be to your advantage to wait for your hair to grow a bit, although i'm not sure if length makes a difference as to how easy or hard it is to actually begin the dreading process.

check up on dreadheadhq.com. it's an awesome resource. i have super straight hair as well. when it got long enough, i just had it permed and then waited a month or two before dreading it. it was a bit unnerving as a guy to walk into a salon and ask for a perm. but, dreads are great. you'll love em!
Now you just told me that friendship is all I'm forced to repair the breech in my wall Illusions and dreams, as usual, it seems Sabra girl, they've been my downfall

i'm going to be trying to get a job at some place needing a computer technician to pay for school the next few years so i may wait until then to try the dreads out... plus i just cut my hair from a probably 5 inch ponytail to mid-ear length

i have wanted dreads for a while, but seeing as how i work in the medical field it probably wouldnt fly too well...maybe once i finish school and have a permanent job/career i will be able to do it...i say go for the dreads-you would be able to do it a lot quicker than if it were longer
Want to trade hair Heatheroo? My hair is thick, curly, and loves to tangle and dread. Every day is a fight *against* the dreading! I would love straight hair I could run my fingers through!
And just in case you're wondering... the hair in my avatar took an hour of work to look like that.

I had dreads a few years back, but they didn't last long. It made my scalp itchy as hell. I tried all the products I could find ease the itchiness, but alas, none could help. More power to the people that it works for.

I had dreads for about a year and then the restaraunt I worked at closed and I had to find a new job. I didn't want to work in a call center and coffee/head shops just don't pay enough for me. So I soaked my hair in a bottle of conditioner and started brushing. It hurt really bad but I kept all of my hair (10-12) incheds past my shoulders). There was of course, some breakage but beauty is pain, right?
Now, a year later...I have cut off all of my hair.
and btw a perm isn't really necessary...but make sure you let your friends know exactly what they are getting into!! Their hands are gonna hurt big time!!
