Some of you may have heard of the duo of Russian conceptual artists Komar and Melamid. One of their most publicized (and controversial) projects was to poll Americans on various aspects of paintings, and then used those results to create what would statistically be the Most Wanted and Most Unwanted paintings for Americans.
most wanted ............................................................................................................. least wanted
Well, not long after they collaborated by New York conceptual composer David Soldier to run the same project with music. Surveys of the American public were done, and the result was, you guessed it, The Most Wanted Song and The Most Unwanted Song.
Here's the kicker: high-quality mp3's of both songs are available, for free and legally, here. Go listen to them, now. You'll be glad you did.
The Most Wanted Song is fairly interesting, but it's the Most Unwanted Song that's the real treat. This beast is over 20-minutes long, and among other aspects features bagpipes, accordion, atonal passages, a children's choir, product placement, tuba basslines, holiday music, startling shifts in dynamics and frequency, political rhetoric, and an opera soprano rapping about being a cowboy.
So go check this out, it's fascinating. And enjoy, regardless of the statistics!
