...passed way last night. She's been in a nursing home for a year or so but it was still a surprise. I owe her a lot as she filled me with my liberal/pacifist views without ever being preachy or judgmental. A PhD biochemist, she fulfilled a major ambition by getting the chance to edit Charles Darwin's letters and correspondence for the last 13 years as well as promoting Fair Trade goods to her (rather conservative) church community. She was a lifelong teetotaller but still bought all the booze for my 18th birthday (legal drinking age in the UK where I grew up) - now that's understanding.
She was still working in the fall of 06 but fell and broke her hip in November which led to depression and a rapid onset dementia which rendered completely helpless by February. She's been very peaceful and smiling at everyone but has hardly spoken a word in the last year.
She left instructions for a simple cremeation with just my Dad, me and my brothers and to have a separate celebration for a larger group of family, colleagues and friends with no coffin or sadness - wearing black is strictly forbidden!
Sorry for the long post but I'm out in Boston on a business trip so I guess I'm turning to my second family to unload.

I'm really sorry to hear of your loss, Colin. From your description, it sounds like she was a wonderful person, and I would have felt honored to know her. I'll be thinking of you in this tough time.
