What worked awesome for me(function wise) was a 13' Panfish fishing pole.....light, telescoping, and like 6 bucks at wal mart. Someone posted that idea last year, it was great. I just lashed it to the window pillar of my car with a towel around it so it wouldn't scratch the paint. I say it worked function wise because like an idiot I made a flag that was black with tiny smiley faces on it...so I spent my late nights wandering aimlessly looking for my tent(thus my screenname). This year I bought a cheap American Peace Flag off ebay..it was like 4 bucks and because it was cheap it's super thin so it won't bend my pole(hehe) Also I got a scrap piece of 3m reflective vinyl from my work and am going to run a large piece of it off the top of my flagpole along with the flag. That stuff lights up super bright when a light hits it, it should help
leds are the way to go...maybe I'll get a few blinkies for on top too...how long does a fresh one last?

I have made several flags in my lifetime and to be honest I like to leave the glue out of the design. If you buy some extra pvc that is thick enough to fit over your other stuff then cut a one foot sleeve to fit over the joints. Drill holes and lash it together with some bolts and wing nuts for convenience. As for the theft, you can buy thin wire at home depot they will cut to length for you, just thread that through your holes at the top and fasten it down with some u bolt clamp thingermajigees. Wont stop someone completly but is a great deterrent.

I just bought the 13ft fishing pole as well. I'm going to attach it to my canopy. I'll probably attach a small wind sock and put some glowy paint on it.

The theft of pirate flags is some sort of old Navy game; it was mentioned in a different thread, I'm sure Meg will be on the ready with the link soon. As for me, rather than going through the hassle of trying to get it into the ground, I think I'm just gonna fill up a 5 gallon bucket with some cement, and cement the first piece of PVC in there. Anyone have experience with the effectiveness of that glow in the dark paint?
windsensations.com made the inforoo flag. It was right at 80 bucks.
I cant offer suggestions on a pole cause i work at a stainless steel tubing company and that is what I made the inforoo pole out of, but that is not available to the everyday person.
Leo's flag instructions are great and a PVC pole will do the trick.

I posted this in another flag thread, but an inexpensive and portable walmart solution is to use a telescoping golf ball retriever with some zip ties for the flag. They're under $10, light, and work great. Last year I used a 2" pvc sleeve that drove right into the ground, no prob. This year I'm going to make it taller by adding another aluminum pole to the base, and get a bigger flag.

glowy paint that i bought at a fabric store does not really glow that well. def would not be visible high in the air. i think reflective tape is the way to go or maybe tie a 12 hr glowstick to the your pole before you leave camp.

Im new here and all...but flying the American flag upside down is disrespectful. Its ok to disagree with our government, but our own died for that flag...whether they wanted to or not, whether it was right or wrong.....that damn flag is why we even have Roo in the first place... Im not hating...just sayin....I had an upside down flag back when Rage was coming up....but well.....rant off....

+1 Heady.
Some people will say things like 'our country is so messed up it's.... (fill in the blank)' and they think flying the flag upside down is a sign of protest. Well, what you do by flying the flag upside down is draw attention to yourself. I always thought it came from when in battle soldiers would fly the flag upside down JUST BEFORE their fort/position was overrun by the enemy. Now it's a general sign of extreme distress.
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
A year or two ago some peaceful, yet vocal residents in my town flew a flag upside down on their front porch. Well, what happened? A cop/army reservist fresh home from Iraq saw it, freaked out, and busted down their door thinking someone was being killed or robbed or raped or something.... then REALLY freaked out when he realized it was a protest. I'm all for free speech and all, but folks need to know what symbols mean. You may bring attention to yourself that you didn't expect.
edit* wait a minute, how'd we get onto this subject?

Most who had a pirate flag got it stolen last year, mine included. But then, that is what pirates do............. ;D This year I am going with a Celine Dion flag
I still have my pirate flag from last year. Peeps don't fuck with a maniac, you see...
This year I am booby trapping my pirate flag with fishing hooks. You can call it a bait flag. ;D
