Cicadas singing can pack quite a punch.
Consider this, something such as city traffic registers at 80 decibels. A single cicada at a distance of 20 inches can reach about 105 decibels while something like a firecracker going off at a close distance registers at 120 or more decibels.
Other estimates of cicada noise puts it at about 90 decibels and each species has its own distinct sound.
Hmmm? now you have millions of them singing and you got one hell of a noise problem.
Put the firecracker next to the cicada, and you will solve the problem.
The media has whipped my area (DC) in Cicada Mania, and just today the ghastly Washington Post, prime perpetrator of Fueled Frenzy, backpedalled on the issue -- stating that they really aren't ALL OVER the area, and where they are, they really aren't that bad.
My 1/2 acre yard has dozens of trees and most are covered in the lil cuties (I like 'em); but Captain, my Captain; do not stir up the frenzy -- they are indeed loud ; but ONLY during the day. What do you suppose the decibels from one of the Festival speakers are from twenty inches away??
