Now I'm a huge animal lover. I have 3 dogs, and over my life I've probably had about 20 pets. When it comes to horse racing, I believe that the horse wants to race just as much as the jockey. They are bred to be competitive, and I really really doubt those tiny little whips hurt those enormous horses that much. Once again, PETA is overreacting to something they have no clue about. So again, PETA loses the little respect I re-gained from them in the past years. Discuss

riding crops definitely do not hurt horses. they hurt us because our skin is thinner, but to a horse its more like a nuisance. or course if you're sitting there just whamming them with it, they're going to get pissed. i've been on horses that ignore crops to no end and horses that feel you lift the crop to tap them and respond immediately.
i was once on a horse that was afraid of crops, and i completely forgot that and i tapped him with it on the shoulder. BAM, i was on the floor within seconds, but it was my fault for forgetting about his fear.
besides that, jockeys are trained to race and they know what they're doing.
eta: i really can't stand peta. they're one topic i get worked up over. does anyone remember when they let the horses loose at a horse show? there were a bunch of show horses in a pen and peta members let them loose, and a couple of the horses wound up getting hit by cars on a nearby street, and had to be put down. "all for the good of the animals.." RIGHT. there was also an article not too long ago about the animals that PETA "saves"... they'll 'rescue' them and then go and kill them. actually i just dug up the website... check it out www.petakillsanimals.com/
OK, I'm no fan of PETA...at all, what-so-ever, in any way.
That being said, I'm also not a fan of horse races. I too believe horses love to run. Do they neccessarily want to run all-out, for however long a race is, dragging a human around on their back the whole way....I don't know. I saw an interview with the trainer on CBS this morning, and he basically said the horse gets over-worked, but there's a lot of money involved. Which is what it comes down to...I don't think they care if the horse is having fun. They care about the mighty dollar.

^^ a lot of race horses are treated very well, but there are a those that aren't treated well. i'm not a fan of horse racing either, i for one don't like it because they get started at such a young age, you've got 2 and 3 year olds racing. they're racing while they're still developing and that means their legs can get pretty messed up by the time they're fully grown. as for carrying a jockey... jockeys have to be a certain height and weight, usually they can't be over 115lbs. in general horses are 1000 lb animals, though race horses would be lighter, but carrying someone that's 200 lbs or under isn't a big feat for them.
but i do agree, horse racing is just like most other activities in the country; fueled by money and the want of money
It's sad but these things happen. The owners love the horses and treat them like gods. I'm not a fan of PETA and like a lot of things they scream about they don't have a clue. They are 1,000,000 dollar horses on 10 cent legs.
^^^ I did make a blanket statement, and I apologize. I'm sure there are many owners out there that love their horses very much. Still, IMO, the horses would be happier running free.
im kinda with bill mahr on the animal thing. i dont like horse racing, dog racing, rodeos, zoos, mega farms, sea world, roadside attractions, the circus, steve irwin, etc...
i think as far as we should go is video taping them from a distance doing their thing. once again i realize that its not a perfect world. and some of these things raise awareness and money, such as zoos. but that probably dosent mean much to the tiger pacing in his cage. i was trapped up in northern michigan for a couple years. i literally had nothing to do and nowhere to go. i paced all day. people that are locked up in jail or institutes pace all day. its a sign of insanity. i feel so bad for all those animals.
I love animals a lot, but I loathe PETA. Here's some "fun" facts for you:
*If you own a pet, even if you love it dearly and take care of it, PETA thinks you are no better than a slave owner. They believe that animals would rather die than live with a human. They're even opposed to seeing-eye dogs and police dogs. *PETA advocates the slaughter of all pit bulls. Pit bulls are not inherently evil; however, some of their masters just train them to be, since they have the potential to be very powerful. *PETA puts to sleep most of the animals it "rescues". Don't believe me? Check out this graph.
*Ingrid Newkirk, the co-founder and President of PETA, has said that she would be opposed to any form of animal testing, even if it would certainly result in a cure for AIDS. *PETA praised Timothy McVeigh, the man behind the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, for choosing a vegan last meal. *PETA's "Holocaust on Your Plate" campaign made direct comparisons between concentration camps and factory farms. Basically, they were insinuating that I, as a meat eater, am no better than a Nazi.

There is a great documentary on HBO on demand right now about the founder of PETA. She is definately a strange bird. The concept is great: Be nice to animals. But like anything that is taken to an extreme it has gone awry! I love my animals and they are as spoiled as my kids. My dogs sleep in bed with me (all 3 - long haired chihuahua, jack russell and black lab), have the run of the house and do pretty much whatever they want. My little ones don't even like to pee outside if its raining, let alone want to be "set free".
This word also has a underground meaning once you break it down. Let’s take “Bonn” for example and it actually turns into the word “Bone”. We all know gays use this word to describe the action of when they are fecal fisting their Cuban cabana boy at their sex bath house parties. Now let’s look at Roo, “Roo” is short for “Kangaroo”.So put the full true message together and you get“Bone a Kangaroo
