Hi all! Somewhat new to inforoo, but I went to the Roo back in 2004, and I'm finally getting to go back this year!
Anyway, I have a regular ticket, and a kindly stranger has agreed to give me a ride all the way from NYC. The problem is that he has a VIP ticket, so I can't enter with him, and one of the perks of having a VIP ticket is not having to wait in line to enter with the regular ticketholders. He's going to try to get me as close as possible but understandably doesn't want to wait in line.
Unfortunately the bonnaroo website doesn't give much info about how far the VIP entrance is from the regular entrances. I'll be in the camping only section....so can anybody tell me the best way to do this?
And random, not so important question - are there any outlets available to recharge cell phones? When I went in 2004, there was a truck where we could use the internet - does anybody know if that was there last year? I just like to be able to check in with my family once or twice a day. Edited - nevermind, I forgot- the website already told me that yes, there is internet access.
I think what VIP'ers do is go to Holiday Inn or something, check in there, and then are told how to get to the VIP entrance. I don't know if you would be allowed there or not with out a VIP ticket...
if you did make it all the way to the VIP entrance, you could probably just get a wristband from one of them, and get out of the car before going into the VIP area
then walk towards the ferris wheel!!
so basically... pack everything in a backpacking-type pack because you are gonna have to haul all your stuff in one load... unless this "kindly stranger" is gonna carry your shit out to Tent-Only for you!
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
^^^Don't think you can even get a wrist band at the VIP entrance. VIPers get them at the hotel. Prolly be best for them to drop you off near a reg entrance before they go to check in. If it's far, I'm sure someone in line will give you a seat in their car. It's Roo.
Walmart is right across the street from the VIP entrance (or pretty close at least. My memory's not that great), so he's going to have tp deal with that traffic anyway.
I've done this the last 2 years. I'm in VIP, but my rideshare peeps are GA. I drop them off with their stuff at the entrance and they usually end up getting a lift from someone on line. You could probably walk in faster than the line moves tho. Bring a wagon or rolling luggage cart for you stuff.
Vipers check in at the Holiday Inn, which is right across the street from Wal-Mart. The VIP entrance is about a half mile down the road from Wal Mart on the south side of the roo property, ALL of the ga entrences are on the North side of the property. Many folks hang out at Walmart the days prior to roo. Have him drop you off at Wal Mart and find a kindly stranger to give you a ride in. You will need to ride with someone from Wal Mart to the GA entrances.
You could walk it, but it is a damn long walk and it will hot.
Tell him that he might as well go ahead and forget about "avoiding traffic", its simply not possible at roo, even for vips. Search around here on the boards and you will find the horror stories from last year about vip check in and entrance.
That would be your best bet, trying to find someone at WalMart that will give you a ride over to the GA side.

Oh, and another question - at the end of the fest, to meet up again, does it make sense to try to meet him at the gas station? Is that walkable? I can't imagine many people go back to the Walmart after it's over, right?
Or, since the fest will be over, if he is with me could I just walk through the VIP section with him to the car?

Thanks!
That shouldn't be too much of a problem. Last year I camped next to someone in VIP getting a ride from someone in GA and they let them drive the car into VIP Monday morning so they could load the gear. I doubt anyone would hassle you about it. If they do, just meet him right outside the VIP gate where the shuttle buses are.
Will there be crazy traffic up to the Walmart? Because that what he wants to avoid. If not, I think that's a great idea.
I think this depends a lot on time of day. In years past we arrived at around 7-8 AM and there was very little traffic until we actually got in line. Last year we arrived at around 1-2PM or so with plans to stop at WalMart for supplies. But by then we couldn't even get close, the exit from I-24 to WalMart was blocked off.
If you're getting there early, WalMart probably is your best bet.

Don't worry about Mon morning. All gates pretty much come down. We go with our son and buddies every year. They stay with the unwashed and we stay in VIP. We meet up a few times and he get a general understanding of where we are. Monday morning he stumbles to our site and off we go. Those boys are really smelly, though.....
