We are driving from Maryland , which all in all totals about an 11 hour drive. The plan is to leave home around 8 or 9 pm and drive all night. Theres been alot of talk about ice and keeping things cold. For thoes of you who have made this drive before, how do we make it the whole drive without our ice watering down everything? Dry Ice wouldnt last, would it?

well, when we've done the drive - we usually ice everything that needs icing in the beginning of the drive and switch out the ice a few times during the drive. dry ice definately helps but you'll still need to change it out a few times. this is best done when your getting gas and good luck on the drive. its a killer.

Dry ice will most definitely last the entire drive if you use it properly. Put a layer of regular ice at the bottom of the cooler, then throw in your dry ice... can't remember how much we used last year, I think I just grabbed 2 or 3 bags from Kroger, and then throw in more regular ice on top of that. Should atleast last you until Sunday morning...
We left at midnight on Wednesday so you should see similar results as us
Yup, coming from Maryland, too. We're going to head out late afternoon on Tuesday and drive to Roanoke to break the trip up a bit. I think with a five-day cooler, ice melt won't be too much of an issue.
^^^Freeze you water bottles and put them in the bottom. Big blocks of ice stay frozen longer than little ice cubes. Plus they won't water everything down when they melt. Then just add ice when you get close.
Or put a bag of ice in still in the bag and don't empty out the bag til you get there. That will stay frozen longer too.
I think having the cooler in the car (rather than the trunk) would help, too. That assumes you have the room.
Its just the two of us driving down in a chevy cavalier. We have decent room, but its definitely not an SUV or Pickup. I had the same thought about keeping it in the back seat, rather then the trunk, and just packing around it. The frozen waterbottles is something that i read about alot, i think i might freeze some up this weekend and see how long they last :-)
What about beer? Should we bring it from home or should we plan to get it further into the trip? If we bring it from home, keeping in mind we only have X ammt of space in the cooler, think it would make it there?
We don't have an SUV, either, but I drive a big sedan. Good question on the beer...I think buying it there is a better option for us since we're leaving BWI on Tuesday afternoon, but who knows what the selection will be in TN. We're definitely bringing our Bloody Mary and Margarita mix with us in plastic jugs, but I think we'll wait on the beer. Where are you in MD?
Hey Kitty. Also a Marylander. We're leaving Tuesday Night. Gonna drive 4-5 hours and get a room. We thought about just leaving Wednesday. But I figure there is no way I'd sleep. So we're just gonna sort of cut the drive in half. Where in MD? I'm Westminster.
We always make sure to at least have a few beers in the cooler. You know you are going to want one the minute you get there. You won't want to wait for it to cool down.
As for buying along the way, I know a lot of people stop and get supplies on the road, but I like to have everything before hand. I feel like I'll forget something otherwise. Actually I know I'll forget something. I like to have everything checked off the list days before I pack up the car and then check them off again as they go in.
I just read about someone around here who meant to stop for water along the way, and forgot during all the excitement, and had to get it all at Roo. Mucho expensive.

We are up in Edgewood (Harford County, right outside of Bel Air) Where are you?
Not that we are SUPER picky about beer, but we have our preferences. We are doing the same with liquor and transplanting them to plastic. MMMMMMM.... rum.
I'm in Annapolis, but picking up a friend (viciouscircle) flying in from Colorado and we're leaving from BWI on Tuesday around 3 pm. I'm fairly picky about beer, too, so that's my only reservation about not bringing it with us. Maybe I'll bring it unrefrigerated. Hmmmmm.

Like Clarity said big blocks of ice are better, you can make them by filling up gallon or whatever size zip lock bags with water and then freeze them. You don't even need to take them out of the bag so when they melt the water will be contained
It's funny...we've rented an RV, but we want to buy our beer after we pick up the RV, because we don't really want the guy at the dealership seeing us load in several cases of beer, some vino (boxed FishEye), and maybe some other booze...but I think we'll still buy it in Jersey, but it just strikes me as funny when we have to pull up to a liquor store in an RV...as for keeping stuff cold, you should see what cold items you could hold off on buying until you're closer to Manchester. I'm sure stores around there will be both overpriced, and overcrowded, but I don't think that'd be the case if you go somewhere maybe an hour, or so, out....BTW, we're looking at a 15 hr drive, but at least there's a tv, and beds, etc, so really, only the guy driving is inconvienced (me, first 5 hr shift)....who cares, I consider the long ride pennance for all the debauchery (hopefully) that'll be going on....
im coming from maryland too. Havre de grace - harford country. this is my third go round and my second in vip.
the last two years we froze two cases of water and it worked out great. we also bring a couple of gallons if we want to wash up at our site to freshin up. i think im going to buy another cooler and get some dry ice, ive never tried that.
every year we leave around midnight and pull in around noon. im hoping to leave a little earlier this year becaseu the vip traffic was a nightmare to the holiday inn.
its so cool to see marylanders going down to the roo!

The drive is almost what I look forward to most. There is nothing like driving 11 hours with some of your best friends, laughing and singing along and whatever else goes on. It's just fun.
I totally agree that getting there will be half the fun...but the ride home, now that's another story...and yes, gas will be a killer, but once you see an RV in person(?), they've got you hooked. It instantly turned me, & my 2 buds, into 11 yr olds, and this thing became our fort...
Any reccomended pitstops on the way from the NE. I'm coming from NY, and I was wondering if there's anything not to be missed. I was thinking about stopping by the smokeys on the way back if the time is amle
i dont have any advice as to where to stop on the way. were usually in a deep state of driving and only stop to pee and get gas. this year were doing a roadtrip after the roo. a couple of nights in nashville, asheville and alexandria to catch the avett brothers on our way home.

I'm looking at about 10-11 hours from the Dallas area, but it's such an easy trip PLUS I already have a hotel booked in Murfreesboro so I plan on doing all my driving Wednesday and just showing up and waiting in line on Thursday morning.
I am just going to bring one cooler with regular ice filled with gin, tonic, limes, and beer. Everything else I'll buy when I get there.
