Finally I will have a chance to catch MMJ, but since they're always such a big conflict for people i have avoided listening to them so i wouldn't have such problems the last few years. After I saw the lineup i have listened to Z a few times, but my question is should i listen to them, or save the show for my first time really getting into them? As long as the superjam isn't whats suggested I will definitely be at MMJ. Thanks for the input guys. (and gals)

I'm slightly biased because I really can't remember the last time I went more than 2 days without listening to atleast one song by MMJ, but I think it'd be more fun if you exposed yourself to a few of their albums. I always enjoy shows much more when I can sing along with the rest of the crowd.
The thing about MMJ is listening to an album is one thing. Hearing them and seeing them live will take it to a whole new level for most people I feel. I've never seen them in person either, however I have watched and listened to several recorded live shows of theirs and the energy that you can feel just watching/listening to it through a computer is unreal.

This is pretty much why i ask. Their albums and their show are totoally different from what i gather. If i get into them I'll probably start at their NPR show and listen to other shows. Then again, I may not even be there, again, due to the superjam.
I kinda got it, but everyone said "they're a live band", so I bought Okonokos.
Now I get it.
I saw their set in '05 but was unmoved (a) because I was completely unfamiliar with their stuff and (b) because I was really waiting for Modest Mouse and (c) because I was distracted by all the puppets, conductors etc. So I say, get to know them first. Start with Okonokos.

Well... given your conflict between them and the superjam, I think it may be tough since I doubt they'll actually announce the superjam prior to Roo this year. You'd basically have to go to the superjam to see what's up there and then make your decision which would likely be to stay there. Any superjam is a once in a lifetime type show, however a late night My Morning Jacket show at the Roo might as well be a once in a lifetime show as well. It's essentially their new album release party and they are going to go nuts on everyone.

I think i will lightly touch on their studio stuff and mostly check out live stuff, but if superjam is Hammett, Claypool, and Hutz I'm gonna have to miss MMJ, but now I am a fan and I WILL see them eventually. Damn superjam, then again, if it sucks i'm sure MMJ will be anything but short, and I won't hesitate to bust ass over there. Any suggestions for good shows other than NPR and Okonokos?

Ziggy, if you manage to miss MMJ at the Roo then I suggest keeping September 2nd free and plan for a trip to Charlottesville. It's not far from you at all really, and MMJ is playing at one of my favorite venues in the state. You know i'll be there! ;D ;D
Come to think of it... you should be there even if you do catch them at the Roo
Sometimes you go through life knowing about bands you might love, but just not listening to any of their material. A good example with me is Mogwai. I know i'd love a lot of their stuff, but i'm still kinda waiting around for that right moment. That's what happened to me at Langerado with Bisco, and they'll be a top 5 for a long long time.
i say listen!! so the new CD comes out on Tuesday the 10th . . . the day i leave for Roo. So i found a bunch o the tracks being reviews on various blogs and compiled them. So out of the new albums 14 track, the following file contains 9 studio versions and 3 live versions. I could not find the other two tracks. I am going to buy the actual CD on tuesday before we leave, but i needed this now.
yeah ziggy...even if you don't go see them i would watch 'okonokos.' turn it up and nom some corn and you should be hooked. if not, go to the superjam. i've gotten into ALL of their studio albums now because of 'okonokos'. they are my favorite band to listen to right now.

Ziggy, dive in, if you want live shows let me know, I have a 04/05/06 Roo, Okonokos + others and a bunch of Jim solo acoustic stuff. The studio albums are honestly just as fantastic once you get to know them. Evil Urges is EASILY my album of the year. Aquarium is spot on about At Dawn, it is very much a modern American masterpiece. This band is quite possibly the best thing we will see in our time. There are plenty of great bands out there, but very FEW with the consistency and classic staying power of this band. Again, my MMJ collection is at your disposal, dont hesitate to ask.
