Recently (March) I started a new job at a place called Butthead's, it's a local tobacconist with lots of cigars and cigarettes and what not. At my interview, I told them that I would not be able to work June 12-16, as I would be at Bonnaroo. I was told this was fine and nothing to worry about. An hour later, they called me and told me I was hired (I'm very good with interviews).
Anyway, one of our other employees gave her two weeks notice today (which puts her final day at June 11) and another quit. I was told that since we need at least three people to run the three different stores, I would not be able to take these days off. I was told to make a choice: Go to Bonnaroo or keep my job.
Obviously, I'm going to Roo, as I won't be assed out of a ticket (two, really, since I bought one for a friend as a Christmas gift) and I refuse to miss Roo for anything in the world. It just really pisses me off that I'm being treated like such dog poop. I'm going to talk to my boss tomorrow and let him know that I thought it over and I really can't afford to just throw away $500 and the only thing I look forward to all year long.
So I guess it's time to start looking for a new job. When it comes down to a battle between four days of paradise on a magical farm and a $9/hr bullhonkey retail job, the choice is clear.
Becca, you're absolutely right. It's totally unfair considering I was given the okay three months ago. I mean, it's not my boss' fault that two people quit on him, but it's not my fault either. And quite honestly, it's more his problem than it is mine.
A friend of mine told me that I could probably call the department of labor and file a complaint, but it's not even worth it. Like I said, it's a $9/hr bullshit retail job that's just putting spending cash in my pocket. I can get another job just like it in a heartbeat.

Yeah, dude. So wrong. I think that was the last straw. I worked insane hours all winter with the promise of vacation when it slowed down. Now they're giving me crap about my vacation. They want me to take in in August. If they are going to give me crap any time I want time off, I need to find a new job.
Clearly he doesn't think you'll call his bluff. How hard is it going to be for him to find 3 new employees once you are gone? Who will be running the store then? I'd actually present it to him that way. Just tell him, I'm really sorry that you are having this trouble right now, but I've invested a lot of effort and money in this and it's too late for me to cancel. If you really want to have to find and train 3 new employees, that is up to you. But I won't be here from 6/12-6/16, if you have replaced me good luck, and if you haven't I'd be happy to come in on the 17th.

When i got the job i told my boss i needed those days off... everyone at law school said "don't do it!" "bad idea!" "and are you F-ing Crazie?" when i asked by boss (big scary guy) yelled at me. When i apologized he said he was just messing with me. I get to go! nearly pooped myself.

If I had to miss Bonnaroo for my job - I'd be so depressed about missing it I'd resent my employer for the rest of my life. I'd seriously quit and just find a new job if that scenario ever comes up. Seriously. Quack a job. Bonnaroo is where it's at. 2 WEEKS ! ! ! ! ! ! !! !! ! ! ! !! ! ! !

glyko I'm glad you got everything resolved! Retail jobs are super a-holes about giving time off over the summer.
I had one helluva time getting a week off from Best Buy for Bonnaroo last summer. I've been trying to find a part time retail job, but I'm just going to wing it and look as soon as I get back from Roo.
But on my application I will have that I cannot work July 10-15 for my vacation to All Good!

i never understood this logic,"work such and such day or lose your job"...id tell them "lemme get this straight,your shorthanded,so you threaten me with losing my job if i dont cancel my vacation?I DOTN THINK YOU CAN AFFORD TO LOSE ME.I tell ya what,when I get back from roo,ill come back to work here if youll give me a raise and a gauruntee i can go to roo next year,or youll be lookin for three people instead of two...and if not,oh well,ill just find another job so when people ask me where i work i dont have to say "buttheads".."

If you feel you've been treated unfairly you can give them a week or two worth of paperwork by writing a letter to your state attorney general's office explaining the situation. techinically what they are doing is illegal but since you have no proof they will eventually win on the appeal. The state legally has to investiage any unfair labor practices, and they will. you wont have to go to court or do anything other then write a letter and stick a stamp on it. Only do this if you reallly wanna hassle them though.. I deal with this stuff and it really sucks for employers..

Yeah...I've been a cook for most all of my college career and I've had something similar come up...this is how I break it down for 'em:
"I won't be in town then."
No questions asked, really...it's not as rude as saying "I'm not fcking coming in if you schedule me," and it doesn't put them in as bad a position. I've NEVER (repeat: NEVER) had anyone fire me when I say this, and I've expected it more than once.
The fact is, ERS is right...they can't afford to lose another worker. F them.
I would not choose any food service or otherwise retail job over Bonnaroo, either. I think my employers and managers could tell, too...or maybe they were just trying to bluff me. Doesn't matter. Just tell 'em you can't, you won't physically be in town then, and you won't be able to make it.
Maybe force that lazy-ass manager of yours to haul his or her ass onto the floor and run the register.
When I approach him, I'm not going to attack him on it or anything.
I'm just going to let him know that I don't think it makes much sense to fire me because then everybody will be in a worse off position. I'll be out a job and he'll be out a worker. Sure, I've only been working there three months, but I know how to do the job at this point.

im semi-scared of a similar situation arising for me. i work at ups during the week and then only on friday i work bussing in a restaurant for extra cash. i have the time off from UPS no prob but for the restaurant you are supposed to find your own replacement, which is kind of stupid in itself. i told one of the managers a month ago i need the day off too, but what it still comes down to is someone being able to work for me on that day. really i dont care im going because im not gonna let some shitty bussing job i work for one day stop me from going, i mean i already have a another job lol
This time last year i had just started my job, and no vacation time up front, I told them before i got hired about my pre-existing plans and they oked it. I had to take it without pay, which sucked. This year, i have vacation time, and my time at roo i will be paid for.
I got my time off in writing back in January. I had to fight with my manager for 2 weeks for him to sign it though. I'm not gonna buy tickets and then give my 2 weeks notice for time off and be denied. But my job isn't easily replaced for me. We have 1 job for every 8 people here.
I fell bad for you guys, the place I work actually closes down on Thursday and Friday BECAUSE of bonnaroo.... Its like Christmas in June around here during rootime. EVERYONE around here gets jazzed up for roo!
