Pretty sure that Clutch had the first pit at the Roo. Their set was killer !! There will deff be one for Mastodon and Metallica. Out of 60 to 80,000 rooers there is gnna be a large ammount of metal fans , looking to have a few beers and start a killer circle pit for Metallica, like every one said , to each is their own, just sit back and take it all in !
Broken Social Scene might make me loose control but i wont be in a mosh pit while they are on, but i feel gogol is gonna get crazy and the crowd is gonna erupt
I'm not really a moshing sort of guy either, at least not anymore. Back in the day I most certainly was. However, I've been desperately wanting to see Metallica since I got into them in fifth grade (13 years ago) and the fact that it's finally happening means that if a killer pit happens I'm gonna be moshing my nuts off (not literally of course...hopefully).
And don't worry mphsvoodoo, it's one of the marvels of nature the way a mosh pit randomly forms and then remains entirely self contained, enabling those at the peripheral to comfortably observe the chaos while still enjoying the show. Even at the most hardcore shows I've ever been to, I've never seen anybody involved in a pit that didn't want to be.
EDIT: Sweet, I just became Swamp Butt. I love how that happened on my post about moshing.

Hope that's sarcasm I smell here. I've been hit, pushed, elbowed in the eye mosh pits that I didn't want to be involved in. It always happens as I try to move away from the mosh pit, and the idiots run toward it and push me back toward it. If it happens at Roo, I take no responsibility for my knee-you-in-the-nuts action that may occur.
I got in the pit at the NIN show here on their last tour, and as I was taking a breather, someone shoved me from behind, face-first into a lowered shoulder and off my feet. The pusher never indicated himself, but the shoulder guy made a good target for the rest of the night. First pit I'd been in since I was like just 18.
As for Bonnaroo, there won't be the type of people in the crowd who would shove someone into the pit. And as for Mastodon...I won't be there, but I'm sure it'll get rowdy. Or something.
I personally dont participate in mosh pits but I dont really mind them because at least you can see where it is. Its the crowd surfers I really hate becuase out of no where you have someone kicking you in the back of the head. the best thing ever was at JOTR this past year some little kid tried to crowd surf during lotus and since everyone was dancing and not expecting a crowd surfer he just dropped the floor after his friends tossed him up. now that was some funny/gratifying shit.
