In previous years cell service from ATT/Cingular and T-Mobile has been spotty at best however Verizon or Sprint have worked fine for the most part. I have never tried to use wifi at 'roo however I have heard there are several places in centeroo with wifi.

Yeah. I have AT&T and hardly any of my calls went through. Also, people tried to contact me last year so we could meet up with and couldn't reach me. So I missed some meet-ups because of that.
I'd suggest not relying on your phone and make plans to meet up with people ahead of time. Walkie talkies may be a good investment, and interesting entertainment in that others may have them too. You could make walkie talkie friends.
I dont want to sound rude, but I would recommend turning your phone off and leaving your computer a home
as far as the phone goes, mine will be on in case someone from my crew (like my gf) gets lost or seperated from me/us,or i need to call/txt someone to find them or if someone wants to call and let me now some heady fun is to be had elsewhere than where i am.
the laptop, yeah im leaving mine at home...the thought of it getting stolen,or worse, stting in a hot locked truck all day, roasting in the heat, doesnt jive with me...i think i can go 4 days without intarwebs..my gf is bringing a camera with two 1g sd cards, and im bringing two flash drives...after we fill up the sd cards,we plan on hitting the media tent to wipe them onto the flash drives...
no internet for 4 days?,doable.....not touching a computer for 4 days, now thats sketchy...
I'll be using my iPod Touch all weekend. Since it's so portable and WiFi enabled, it will be a great tool to stay connected. If anyone wants to contact me via e-mail or AIM onsite, feel free. My AIM is MoeTrainsTracks (surprise), and e-mail is Moe@MoeTrainsTracks.com...
We'll be staying in Tent Only. Do you think I'll be able to get WiFi there as well?
I thought I saw something that this year they were going to upgrade the wifi. They said they would post some of the sets online right after the show. To be a competitive music fest this is what they have to do. I do not own a lat top, but people in my group are bringing theirs.
Any wifi or net hookups at the Roo?? Gonna be hard to go without hooking in for 4 days ??? What about cell phone coverage? Any bars out there??
I have Cincinnati Bell wireless (which I believe utilizes AT&T), and service was horrible last year. Texts were even worse than calls. Maybe 5% of my calls got through (mainly in the morning, when everyone else was sleeping off the previous night's activities), and only 1% of texts. Made it extremely difficult to coordinate with friends. I would recommend walkie-talkies, and if you are planning on meeting up with friends, try to meet up off-site, and come into Roo at the same time, because you may not be able to find them otherwise, once you get on site.
I am actually looking forward to an excuse to turn off the computer, I'm not going to bring it. I find that I run to the computer at the slightest hint of boredom/freetime, and I'm looking forward to finding other stuff to do. I say leave the computer, it'll be there when you get back.

^^^ Wish I could : ( I have a bunch of deadlines coming up so I'll have to occasionally bust the computer out and get some work done. Please don't smite me or pour rancid beer on me if you see me sitting in front of my computer. Gots to pay the bills so I can do fun things like go to Bonnaroo
Watchin' a stretch of road, miles of light explode. Driftin' off a thing I'd never done before. Watchin' a crowd roll in. Out go the lights it begins. A feelin' in my bones I've never felt before...

Some folks aren't able to turn their phones off...they have children or others at home who may need to reach them. I'm bringing my computer so I can upload pics each night rather than having to buy umpteen cards.

Unfortunately I have to have my Treo and laptop along with me just in case something goes wrong at the office. I would love to leave them at home but when you manage an understaffed IT department there is almost never a time when you are truly free.

Last year when I was laying in the grass after having my mind blown from Tool, my phone rang, and i thought was a text so I opened it up and it was my dad. Sorry dad, Im not in good shape to have a conversation right now, I will call you back tomorrow. Verizon always seems to get decent service though.

I am very glad that Bonnaroo has a wifi network on the farm. It could get very expensive for me if they did not.
Unfortunately I need to check in on the Internet at least once a day on my sites and ad campaigns. If a server goes down not only is there a loss of revenue from missed sales, but there is also wasted money on ad costs for clicks that go nowhere, not to mention dead sites turn off customers from ever coming back.
So this requires a laptop or an ipod. I'll be bringing an ipod and making use of the wifi network just to make sure all is well. If a problem arises, then I can have the datacenter reboot the servers and / or I can pause the ad campaigns.
I would love to be able to walk away from the Internet for a few days, but then that means money out of my pocket. So if this is the price I have to pay for not having to work for someone else, I'll gladly pay it.
Another key thing to do if you're on your Touch is to add important phone numbers to your AIM buddy list (on MobileChat or Apollo). You can text people's phones from AIM. Just add "+1" then the phone number. It's good for when you can't get reception. I've gotta add a ton of numbers to my AIM list. (I'm MoeTrainsTracks on AIM btw)
Have you done a jailbreak on your Touch? It's a must! Go to Ziphone.org to do it.
I have a problem every once in a while with installing stuff, but nothing major. There's a fix for Apollo, but I use MobileChat. It's the most stable of the 2 (at least for me).
There aren't a ton of apps that I use with the Jailbreak. Messaging and Summerboard themes are what I mostly use it for... Ok, I also use it for the SNES and NES emulators. Gotta love being able to play any of the Super Mario Bros and Punch out at any time!
As long as I have the ability to text I can care less about cell reception. While I'm at Roo I'm going to be removed from the world. I won't be communication with anyone from the outside world until I leave Monday morning.

I definetly hear this; I have to bring my laptop to remind the huddled masses yearning to use AS400 , what their passwords are. If only I made consultant money. I'm bringing the cell for twitter too

The problem is that the GSM towers were completely overloaded last year, so even text messages were completely unreliable.
If you're communicating on GSM networks (Verizon, Sprint, Alltel), you're fine. If you or your correspondent are on a GSM phone, however, you're SOL.
I'll just be using my phone in case someone in my group is missing or they want to tell me where something cool is going down. Its important to have eyes and ears all over at 'roo. I probably won't use the wifi on my iphone to conserve battery.
I was wondering if anyone posts here during 'roo. I don't really know why, I was thinking maybe to inform others as to where the real Shakedown was or who was going to be in SuperJam. I donno, just a thought.
