If I go next year, I'm bringing the bare essentials. We were never at camp long enough to do anything.
I agree. Last year was my first year and I brought way too much stuff thinking everything would be used. I didn't even use half the stuff I brought. I was planning on grilling all these meals, but the only food we cooked was breakfast every morning and made sandwiches for the rest of the day to bring into centeroo.

So true! Every year you bring less and less.... I was down to 1 suitcase this year ;D
Yeah I actually took WAY too much food this year. I will say that bringing lots of bagels and cream cheese will make for better mornings (only had 6 bagels this year), but other than that -- not really much to say. I took too much food, too many pieces of clothing. The coleman battery powered fan I bought was the most amazing purchase ever though.

My biggest mistake: Too much beer, not enough gatorade and bottled water. By Sat night we were out of hydrating fluids, and monday morning we had 10 beers left over. We didn't spend nearly enough time at the camp site to drink the beer. And we spent our last day at Bonnaroo drinking the egg-flavored ground water.
For food I managed to live almost the entire weekend on pop tarts, dry cereal, chips, cliff bars and trail mix. The trail mix was the best; tasty, delicious, filling, and a great energy boost.
In terms of the gear you should bring, I highly recommend large tarps. We had a 16'X30' and on the was I think 10'X16'. We also had an EZup and 4 tents. The tarps kept our tents completely dry in storms that were definitely capable of penetrating, if not shredding or blowing away, any rain fly. Unfortunately, we had used a mix of good and cheap tent poles, so we were holding up the tarp ourselves for a portion of the storms. The next day we reconfigured and tied the larger tarp off the the car, ground, and EZup on 3 sides, so only used tent poles on oneside, and were able t o use just the good ones. The smaller tarp tied to the EZ up, ground, and part of the big tarp. Bottom line, the tarp kept us dry from rain and provided great shade and even a little breeze when it got hot. So what you need:
~Huge tarp, plus a smaller one (this was to cover 4 tents, and we mostly used the EZ up area as our cooler/seating area) ~Tons of zip ties, as well as a pair of dykes to cut them off without causing any damage ~GOOD tent poles-you want the $30 poles from REI, not the $8 ones form Walmart, so start stocking up now if you can't afford to buy like 10 at once
I would also say that even though the people with us brought grills, I would not do it again. We still ate almost all of our hot meals from the vendors, although we did eat plenty of chips and other "munchy" type foods at camp. And I always like to have something to drink besides water and beer. We had a little Dr. Pepper and some gatorade last year.
Sorry about the novel, but this thread gets me so excited for roo '10!!
protip: tarps are good, even better when designed with a little drainage in mind.
last year, we had a crushed campsite when water collected in the middle of the tarp - eventually exceeding the load capacity of the shade tent it was covering.
^^ooh yeah, good point! I forgot about that, but yes, definitely make sure you have a place for drainage....I think when we rebuilt camp and had all sides attached to something different (car, poles, EZ up and ground) it seemed to help a lot to have those different angles, but still something to look out for.
^^Almost perfect, but I would never bring a sleeping bag to roo. Air mattress with light sheets and blankets is the most comfy. It does get chilly at night, but not enough for a sleeping bag.
Haha, yeah we had a 4-runner with the back seats down and filled to the top like that (although the subwolfer/amp thing takes up most of the space in the back) then we had chairs and tents on top, and a little trailer on the back for the coolers. It really wasn't too much for us though, I think I'll end up bringing the same stuff for 2010.
Also I forgot to list guylines on my long list of camp setup equipment. Guylines to hold things in place and plenty of colorful ties to mark them--one orange tie next to the grass doesn't cut it. I got a nasty rope burn from tripping over my neighbor's last year.
^^ This! Guy lines! I totally forgot about them! Luckily I was at the wal-mart on Wednesday so I was able to buy rope etc. Otherwise it could have been bad!

2009 was my first year, and it's funny how you think you're so prepared but you don't use somethings and wish you had brought others instead. Hopefully 2010 will be more than just me and my bf so we can split/share with others, but my best advice for everyone is just pack the bare essentials. You'd be surprised what you can live without.
a bunch of bread and peanut butter. lived off that stuff all weekend some grapes FREEZE POPS in a cooler (make sure they're frozen)- people will trade you corn for them
a big ass ziplock bag for electronics when i jump in the fountain tarps--mixed sizes, and bring a couple of them. you can put them down inside your tent if the bottom gets wet, or put them over the tents if it gets really nasty chairs flashlight (this one is important) tent blankets pillow deodorant stakes money gold bond toothbrush toothpaste hand sanitizer car cellphone charger - you'll want it on the ride home after your phone is dead
think that was about it. hardly spent any time at camp, except for sleeping
oh yeah and one of those car battery remote starters (they look like bricks with battery cables coming out of them). that would have been helpful.
ultralight 2 person tent inflatable sleeping mat 55 degree sleeping bag camelback gatorade powder duct tape jerky (1 bag) cliff bars (5-7 per day) dehydrated meals (1-2 per day) apples, oranges, banana (1-2 per day) ultralight stove and fuel portable tea pot flash light multitool 2 - 10" X 10" portable fans (in a 2 person tent it's almost like having A/C.) TP water proof stuff-sacks SPF small first aid portable water filter (to filter out the chemicals and sulfur taste from the water troughs) Hand Sanitizer Fold out chair Boots sandles Rain Jacket Fleece sweat wicking underwear sweat wicking spf shirts non-cotton shorts spf Hat sunglasses
All of this fits in my backpack if i want to goto tent-only in one load. totally weight is like 70 lbs. i think.
