Ok, someone please someone inform me of how BAD of an idea this is... to not wear sun screen at roo and to amplify the suns rays with a product called Afro Sheen to "maximize" your tan... This is not my idea by the way... I am trying to convince my Roo Virgin girlfriend that putting afro sheen all over her body before going to the concerts every day is a bad idea and she will be really badly burned...

i dont even know what to say. tell her not only will she ruin her time, she will ruin yours - because she is going to get sun poisoning and be really really unhappy.
she should at least put on 15. she doesnt need to go overboard with the SPF but something! also you can tell her my grandpa just got half of his ear cut off cuz he never wore sunblock when he was younger. so now he gets skin cancers.
Ya she I told her she would get sick and dehydrated because she also decided she doesnt like the taste of water... she is bringing gatorade though! Also her friend is the one who talked her into this she is also a Roo virgin going with us and she claims to have very strong skin... Her friend claims she will not be drinking alcohol because she has a heart condition and cannot get dehydrated or she will have to go to the hospital... She also does not like water... and will also be wearing afro sheen...
Sounds to me like her friend is begging for dehydration by wearing that and not drinking water...
i guess the bottom line is that bonnaroo is 4 long days spent almost entirely in the sun, and plenty of girls on here will agree that you WILL get a tan, even with high SPF sunscreen. if she really won't listen, see if she'll agree to wear a low-medium SPF on the first full day and see how much sun she's gotten by the next morning.
getting burned really sucks. aside from possibility of skin cancer and the initial pain of it, you usually end up peeling and losing any of the color you had anyway, so it's just not worth it from any angle.
I agree... tell her she will most definitely peel and lose her tan anyway. I have olive skin that is pretty "strong", meaning I tan well and hardly ever burn, and I got a pretty badass sunburn last year WITH SPF 15 that peeled and looked terrible... not to mention how it felt. I didn't apply heavily or often enough. Those TN rays are serious business. She will get a TERRIBLE sunburn, and like Becca said, likely sun poisoning and it will ruin her weekend. If she doesn't wear SPF she will burn... if she puts that grease crap on her she will get sick and feel like an idiot. Show her this thread to convince her. At the least, she should just try out the first day without the Afro Sheen (and hopefully with a low SPF) and then she'll know firsthand.
Oh, and: I can't imagine that stuff will feel very comfy with how hot, muggy & dusty it is. Wearing a lotion sunscreen makes me feel yucky enough... blech.
And! She'll like the taste of water by the second day, I'll bet money. Don't worry about convincing her on that one.
If that doesn't work then immediately after setting up camp, take her afro sheen and chuck it. Then tell her no nookie until she puts on sunscreen.
Or you could just keep dumping water on her. At leas that way she'll absorb some of it through her skin and she might get so annoyed that she says "Ok, I'll put on effing sunscreen, just stop dumping water on me."

I personally got sun poisoning once in Mexico(over my birthday at the end of April), and that was just from laying out in the sun for 4 hours. Basically, your entire body turns beet red, your body is constantly sweating because it is overheated. You can not cool yourself down no matter what you do, you can take a cold shower and in 5 minutes you will be shivering your ass off and dripping in cold sweats. Luckily I had an air conditioned room, room service, tons of aloe, and an understanding girlfriend, but... Add this to the fact that sun poisoning makes one extremely nauseous, and unpleasant feeling and to be around and you have one BIG FUN KILLER. Tell your girlfriend that she can pick any other weekend of the year to be a FUN KILLER, but not this weekend. If she is that concerned about her tan (with lack of concern for the skin cancer part) just go buy her a month subscription at a tanning salon with the understanding that Roo is not for "tanning"
tell her to hang on to the afrosheen. this stuff has a million uses if its the stuff i use. is it aerosole? as long as it is the natural stuff (only natural oils) you can use it on all types of leather - makes it look great. i just used it on some leather sandals and it brought them totally back to lfe. great for leather boots or gloves nd helps protect things from water exposure. you can put a small tad on your hair for shine (dont buy the kind with the hairspray in it - just the natural oil). you can shine your nails with it - just put a tiny amount on and buff. maybe if she realizes she can use it otherwise she will save it and not use it.
if she wants to tan she could tan for an hour then put on sunscreen but i think using the oil to tan all day could lead to problems - and missing a good time!
Tell her that I live in Tennessee, and on Memorial day weekend I was outside at the pool for just ONE HOUR with no sunscreen and I am still burned today. No joke.
I hope she listens to you or someone at least... if not, and she ends up with a bad burn, don't let her ruin your weekend!
OMG jray - where the hell did you find her - I'm sorry - but we have some stupid girls in Mississippi. She needs to put sunscreen on and drink some friggin' water - I can just see it now - you are gonna spend time at the med tent with her getting a drip for dehydration. and she is gonna end up with some serious burn
Let her know - when the burn gets bad enough - it blisters and the blisters then pop and scab over and cause scarring - see if she wants that just because she is concerned about her tan.
She can still get a tan with sunscreen - but what she is wanting to do sounds like one of the stupidest things in the world - besides - if she uses afrosheen won't that clog her pores up and make it harder to sweat - and she is gonna sweat!

ok 1st year i wore sunscreen and still got sun poising on my back..last year i wore nothing and go burnt and i don't burn usually im a very olive skinned person..tell her not to worry and unless she wants to look like a raisin wear some freaking sunblock and do not use tanning oil for anything!!!!!!!!!!
I can't stop thinking about how yucky it would be to have all the dirt, dust, and other random grime sticking to that greasy stuff, and like Meg said, the pore blockage...disgusting.
I was so miserable last year mainly because I got burned so this year I decided to go tanning to try and get a base tan so that doesn't happen this year. Hopefully!
If she continues to be stubborn despite your concerns, let her do it, but make her promise before hand that she can't whine and complain to you if she ends up miserable. If she's at all reasonable, she should agree that your 'roo experience shouldn't suffer because she chose to do something you warned her against.
If she gets badly burnt she probably won't keep the promise (because she will be absolutely miserable!) but go ahead and bring a little sun-burn care pack anyway, (aloe, sunscreen, after-sun lotion, something to cover shoulders, etc.) she'll be happy you brought it. She won't be needing you to tell her "I told you so" and you probably don't want to end up fighting at 'roo either, so just focus on making your and her experience a good one - despite the burn.
Why not spring for a spray on tan for her now, and then let her be tan and use sunscreen. I got one last year and they are amazing.
Bingo. I like this idea a lot. She can wear sunscreen while at 'Roo and work on her "real" tan gradually and more safely. Best of both worlds.
But people are sooo right about her likely fate if she's foolish enough to try amplifying the effects of the suns rays along with refusing to drink enough water. She will be miserable, nauseous, in pain and ultimately in need of medical attention. And for what? A major burn which proceeds to blister and peel, while increasing her chance for skin cancer? Not a good reason to ruin her weekend and yours.

Are there really people still on this planet that think tanning in this way is attractive or safe? Scary scary scary!!! I used to be a tanaholic - never greased myself up but was addicted to tanning salons. That was until a boss died from melanoma. Talk about a reality check!
I wore SPF 30 and got a darker tan at Bonnaroo than I did from 5 weekends at the beach with SPF 15.
A couple of years ago I was in Jamaica and after 4 days with sunscreen of 15 or higher, I thought I could handle a day with SPF4. Took an hour nap, woke with sun poisoning. The rest of the weekend I could hardly move, was NO fun to be with, was physically ill, had chills, and even trying to go to bed was pure torture. That was at an all-inclusive with AC, swimming pools and aloe plants free and accessible. I can't image how horrific an experience it would be at Bonnaroo...
Maybe just her time on Thursday later in the day will show her how hot, dirty, and icky she would feel all greased up and she'll ditch the Afro Sheen for Coppertone in time for the weekend sun. My fingers are crossed for you and her!

Thanks every one for your input! I showed her the thread and she is now buying SPF 30 sunscreen! LOL I love the power of Inforoo! But her friend is still hell bent on afro sheening and frying to death... O well at least I dont have to worry about my girlfriend... Karma coming to you all when I can!

having been hospitalized with heat stroke before, I can tell you that it is no fun. You really need to drink lots of water, Gatorade or anything else of the sort. At Coachella last year, I had a bottle of water or Gatorade going 24/7. Even if I'm drinkning beer later on, I'll slip a bottle of water in there every now and then.
