I have been searching for a shorter and less mountainess way into Bonnaroo. I have found one and was wondering if any Knoxville people are taking the strait shot through Sparta? Those mountains down around Chatanooga were tough and I don't want to drive the bus uphill for long distances in the heat. It looks like a good way to go and I checked out some topo maps and it seems a lot flatter.

in your situation, i think going through sparta would be the way to go. i drove my pickup, towing a vw bus, over monteagle a couple summers ago... it was very close to being a big mistake. i've been to sparta from manchester, and the drive isn't too bad. coming down 55, will put you right where you want to be for getting into bonnaroo.
Is every little town and power-mad cop going to be on the lookout for RV's, vans and cars with out-of-stae plates as we pass thru? Is bonnaroo their biggest source of municipla revenue for the year?
I am considering 55 but worried about being delayed or imprisoned.

without reason, you shouldn't be pulled over. if they want to search, politely decline... if they persist, keep declining, then ask nicely if you may call your lawyer. be careful, thats the best advice i can give.
Cap'n - you're still going to have to make the incline on 40 West of Knoxville, so 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other...Teine: is the blasting project done on w24 in Monteagle? I got stuck in a hellatious backup last year when they diverted traffic uphill (albeit after Bonnaroooo)
Just an FYI, last year we tried to take the "shortcut" into Bonnaroo and went down Highway 55 and ended up in traffic for 17 hours. We didn't get in until after 8 am on Friday morning and we were in line in the early afternoon on Thursday. I don't know if it'll be any different this year, but just though I'd mention it.
I went to ut for 8 years and currently live in McMinnville, the last town you would pass through if you take the Sparta route to Manchester. That is probably the best way to go for you. It will take right at two hours to get to mcminnville. manchester is anotehr 25 or so miles down the road. Traffic on 55 will still be heinous as you approach manchester.
