I am under preparing for Roo? I'm a first-timer and after seeing pics of these huge, elaborate campsites I'm confused...
I am not planning on staying at my site except to pass out. I know its hot and all and a nap would be nice here and there, but its only 4 days, I can sleep later. I survived Coachella last year without any problem.
Am I not alone here or am I totally in for a surprise?

It's not necessary to have an elaborate campsite... It's just more comfortable when you are restin' up. I would atleast have a tent and a chair and a cooler (preferably filled with beer) for your campsite
the difference between roo and cochella is the hunidity factor... the humidity will zap you.. you will need shade in mornings if for nothing else to chill under before going to centeroo... find shade in centeroo for short afternoon naps between shows
This word also has a underground meaning once you break it down. Let’s take “Bonn” for example and it actually turns into the word “Bone”. We all know gays use this word to describe the action of when they are fecal fisting their Cuban cabana boy at their sex bath house parties. Now let’s look at Roo, “Roo” is short for “Kangaroo”.So put the full true message together and you get“Bone a Kangaroo
We have enough room in our tent to fit in all of the Wayan's brothers, and there is only 3 guys, myself included, in the group. We're packing chairs and a couple of coolers. I want to invest in an EZ UP but they're waaay expensive. Maybe that folding picnic table with umbrella would be nice and it's only 50 bucks?

if your not looking to be at your campsite very often, but want some shade. we bought these chairbrellas at walmart and they pretty much kicked ass. they connected to your chair and you could bend any which way, so you could block the sun. we were so grateful we picked them up last minute.

the ez up weekender 10X10 '64' is currently on sale at sports authority (here at least) for $60... just make sure to test it beforehand, cause bent poles happen on the truck ... I drank a beer under one today in 95 degree humid heat... and it worked wonders...
Here's the biggest piece of advice I've been getting lately: DON'T PLAN ON SLEEPING IN.
Most people simply are incapable of sleeping on the ground... in the humidity... in the sunlight. With that in mind, I'd much rather be under my screened-in canopy in a comfy chair around a table with my friends than huddled up in a dark tent for a few hours waiting for noon.

I picked up a super-sweet 13x9 screened-in Greatland canopy from Target today for $60. I had to go to two locations, but it was totally worth it. They have a $120 version , but I honestly don't see why it costs twice as much. I think the screens zip off or something.
The only problem-- I don't think either one is water-proof, but I think our other one is. It's also a Greatland canopy, but this one was $40 and doesn't have screens.
(I assume all this has been covered (pun intended) but I'm toolazy to look it up. Hope this helps somebody out there.)

If you have a Garden Ridge in your neighborhood check it out. We got an awesome deal on one there.

i just found a great deal today at kmart of all places. i got a quik shade weekender instant canopy (the ez-up type). it's 12x12 and came with a free wheeled case and a strap-on wall and it was only $80. i almost crapped my pants when i saw it because i knew how much they usually cost.
Picked up a $20 non-EZ-up (difficult-up?) canopy at walmart... it's one of those with the poles and "T" & "Y" angle connectors. It's cheep and provides 10'x10' of not getting burned.

this. im going to be camping with a group of 6-12 and it would be kind of ridiculous if we had no where to relax and get out of the sun until the shows start.
The guys camping next to us last year didn't have a shade tent and they were very unhappy sitting out in the sun waiting for the shows to start.
You will wake up super early because of the heat and will have several hours to wait until the first show starts.
We invited our neighbors to try to fit under our shade tent, but there wasn't much extra room. We also told them to make themselves at home when we weren't there.
At the same time, the couple on the other side of us only had their tent and they really did spend almost no time at camp - I'm not sure if we ever really learned their name.
I set up an elaborate shade area around our RV not because we're in it a lot, but because the few minutes it takes to set it up, it is AVAILABLE any time we want it over Roo's several days. I tend to overplan and go nuts for Roo so that when we roll in and set up, I can officially stop giving a s_hit and just enjoy for all of Roo. It's a creature comfort for us to have an outside "porch" to enjoy-- and we have an RV!
When I did GA I did the same thing. It was worth it. Just my two cents.

We brought everything we needed last year EXCEPT for some sort of shade and if we wouldn't have had cool neighbors it would have sucked. Like dcbee our neighbors told us we could hang out in their shade all we wanted (they were the coolest). You just don't realize how hot it gets inside a tent...tents are pretty much for sleeping at night only.
This year, I bought an EZ-UP type canopy...I figure I can use it for years so the price tag didn't bother me too much.
1. get a tent-only spot next to the fence 2. attach (with twine) a tarp or couple of sewed-together tapestries to the far side of the tent (on the bottom) 3. Pull tapestries over tent, and tie to fence.
It's not tall, but you can sit under it if need be. We are (assuming I find my ticket) going with only a couple of backpacks, so it is very important to us to pack LIGHT. This is the best way I can think of.
Wake early, head into Centeroo, nap in the tent where your first show is at. This works well for me, but I have been woken up a few times by well-meaning medics.
I just figured out a solution though, my buddy DJ is going down with a giant Sailing umbrella. Last year we stood it on end and tied it to the tents all the way around. We had a good 25 feet of shade, after tacking sheets and skirts and whateverelsewecouldfind to it.
Fund a knock-off shade for only 30 bucks at wally world today - thanks for the advice! I live in the Ozarks so I know how humidity can affect people after hours and hours!

Im pretty excited about my shade tent. I got a 20 X 30 Ez-Up for 100 bucks including shipping. Do you think that will be too big? Im definetly sharing with the neighbors!

Honestly, last year we didn't bring a canopy or anything and it didn't bother me...since then I've been a bit brainwashed by inforoo into thinking I must be insane to go without shade, but it's not like we were like "wow we're stupid we should have brought something" at the time.
The important part of having shade may not be during hang-out time... for me it's all about catching that extra hour or two of sleep. As soon as the sun hits your tent it turns into an oven
blockage of sun + air flow + ambien = sleep until 11am ;D

We have a setup that calls for 2 10x10 quikshades that we've been using at festivals. It is pretty comfortable. The only addition this year is an additional 12x12 to go overtop of the 10x10 that will support our tent insert. The 12x12 should provide a superstructure that will help with shade and heat.
The 10x10's were only $60 a piece. The 12x12 was $80. I'd say that is standard pricing for anything that isn't commercial grade.
