Louisville band was the talk of the town – and the nation By Jeffrey Lee Puckett • jpuckett@courier-journal.com • December 28, 2008
For the guys in My Morning Jacket, this time last year offered some of the last peaceful moments they would enjoy before a fuse was lit and the ensuing explosion changed their lives.
December and January were a breeze. February brought rehearsals. But everything changed in March when the band performed at Austin's South By Southwest music festival. It debuted a new album at the festival, which is overrun by industry insiders and fans alike, and the buzz for "Evil Urges" was heard nationwide.
Suddenly, everyone was talking about the Louisville band with an unprecedented excitement.
"It all started with South By Southwest," singer Jim James said of a remarkable 2008. "That was kind of the beginning of it all. And we were on the cover of Spin right around that same time, which was the first of the big stuff.
"It's been crazy. There has been so much. It's just nuts."
That's putting it mildly.
Since last March, Louisville's most acclaimed rock 'n' roll band has had a best-selling album, been featured in every major music magazine, performed for Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien, sold out New York's Radio City Music Hall and been nominated for a Grammy for best alternative rock album.
The flipside has been the serious injury that James sustained in an Oct. 7 fall from a stage in Iowa City, Iowa. A string of tour dates was canceled as he's recovered in Louisville from severe body trauma that's still healing. It was an abrupt hiccup in a banner year, but a philosophical James sees it as a blessing -- aside from the 10 weeks of near-constant pain.
"It's been a great year, but being injured has added this whole twisted level," he said. "To me it's almost fitting. … There has been so much positivity and so much love, but at the same time there was the injury and a lot of people didn't like the album, so it all sort of balanced out."
The band's 2008 timeline goes something like this:
March -- The album is debuted at SXSW, and a lengthy cover story in Spin puts the band in the company of Prince, Madonna, R.E.M. and The Beastie Boys.
May -- MMJ perform "I'm Amazed" and "Evil Urges" on "Saturday Night Live," getting major props from host Shia LaBeouf.
June -- "Evil Urges," released on the 10th, debuts at No. 9 on Billboard magazine's Top 200 album chart. Three days later the band electrifies the Bonnaroo festival with a four-hour set considered by many to be the event's highlight.
On June 20, MMJ performs a sold-out show at Radio City Music Hall, although it is soon eclipsed by another NYC show. That same day, the band appears on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," performing "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Part 2."
August -- A transcendent show in Louisville's Waterfront Park draws more than 10,000 people. The band travels to Texas and is filmed for an episode of "Austin City Limits" telecast in November. James also does a solo set at the Newport Folk Festival, and sits in with Calexico and She & Him, dueting with actress/singer Zooey Deschanel.
September -- The band makes its debut on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," performing "I'm Amazed."
October -- The run of milestones is derailed by the fall, sending James, Patrick Hallahan, Tom Blankenship, Carl Broemel and Bo Koster home for a premature vacation (at least for those not in excruciating pain).
December -- Rolling Stone names "Evil Urges" the fourth-best album of 2008, trailing TV on the Radio, Bob Dylan and Lil Wayne.
"Some of it, it's like I don't even remember. It seems like it was years ago," James said. "We were talking about this a couple of weeks ago. I mean, we played Radio City Music Hall, which is amazing, and it seems like a lifetime ago."
New Year's Eve marks the band's return to the spotlight -- at Madison Square Garden, no less. More than 10,000 tickets have been sold for what promises to be the band's most elaborate production yet.
"I'm definitely kind of nervous about it," James said. "I hope to get back to full-bore, but we won't know what I'm capable of until we get there."
James is certain about one thing, however: Next year will be much different. His injury has led him to rethink the band's typically nonstop approach to its career, and he sounds a lot like Robbie Robertson in "The Last Waltz" -- a touchstone for MMJ -- when talking about the changes.
"I envision it being calmer because I've just got to slow down the touring a bit," he said. "Getting injured was a really big wake-up call. It was the second time I've been injured and had to be hospitalized, directly because of the wear of the road.
"I think next year is going to be more about working on stuff, working on music. I'll be doing the Monsters of Folk thing with (Bright Eyes') Conor (Oberst) and working on some MMJ stuff. Next year will definitely be more of a songwriting year."

strum, a guy ive talked to before on the mmj forum is selling a ticket and is looking for someone to share the cost of his 2 bed hotel room.
"My buddy can't make it to the show. So I have a room at the Stanford hotel, 2 twin beds, the hotel is in between the Garden and The Ginger Man. And I have an extra ticket. Section 206 Row A. I'd love to split the room with someone in need. Everything is almost sold. I'm a 41 year old father, very mellow. Just looking to cut and recover some costs. PM if any interest, or any other questions. Tom"

Unfortunately now is not a good time for me to be spending money on a ticket or hotel or travel expenses. Had I done all of this in the summer when I had a job it would've been alright maybe... But as it is, I got $25ish to my name right now. No luck for me
If anyone else wants in on the NYE party let me know by tonight so I can submit my list tomorrow. We will have yummy food, great craft beer/first tier liquors, and guitar hero for 4 hours 3-7.
So my wife and I decided last minute that the $250 we were gonna pay for the hotel in Queens was too much and booked a room in Clifon,NJ. Damn check in is at 3 so we will be a few minutes late but we will be there with bells on.
EDIT: It was after we booked that I found the reviews with the stories of bed bugs. Hahahaha ... that sucks.

Damn dude, that sucks..how are you expecting to get into the city that day? Driving? If I can suggest something, you may want to drive into Hoboken and take the PATH train to the city.I don't think you will be able to get back to Clifton if you take any public transportation from there.
I think we will be ok. Public transportation runs on a sunday schedule new years day. If all else fails we cab it back. I've taken PATH alot over the years I'm not wanting to spend the $30 -$40 bucks to park in Hoboken. There is a train and bus station 15 minute walk from the hotel ... we should be fine.
Bus runs to Port Authority, pick up the E and away we go.
Thanks though. Point of that was cheaper isn't always better.

I bet they'll let you check in early...ask! Last time I was in NY, the hotel let me check in three hours early. If not, they can certainly hold your bags. And bring a can of Lysol...that always makes me feel a little better in skeevy situations!

The only thing missing is Phone Went West, War Begun and Bermuda Highway. If it just had those 3 songs, I would venture to say that it's damn near perfect
edit: oh snap, I just realized there was no Dondante. That's almost disappointing

We did when we booked. They said that because it was NYE they had every room booked. No dice. I forgot to ask about holding bags so I need to call again. No fear. And Sass you and my wife are on the same page. She got a can last night.
I am so insanely excited that I can barely concentrate. Idioteque, definitely stop by...we're planning to be there right at 3 and maybe cut out a little early to hit the hotel and freshen up before the show -- plus, you know what happens to RedVelvet when there's an open bar within 20 miles .
