has confirmed that will join Dave Matthews Band in 2009. The Flecktones saxophonist started subbing for an injured LeRoi Moore this past June and has been in talks with the group's management about signing on in a more official capacity since Moore's death this past August. In a message posted on his site, Coffin says:
There have been many people asking and, yes, I will be joining Dave Mattews Band starting in 2009. I am honored to be asked to be part of such a fantastic group of musicians and people and am looking forward to making some great music! Thanks to all the many for their support and encouragement. See you out there.
Coffin will perform with Umphrey's McGee at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre this evening. He will also sit in with My Morning Jacket at New York's Madison Square Garden on New Year's eve. As some readers may remember, Coffin was part of the horn section My Morning Jacket employed for its four-hour performance at Bonnaroo. Sex Mob's Steve Bernstein will also be a part of My Morning Jacket's horn New Year's Eve horn section.
I was just there for Neil Young and I had no issues at all...they checked my bag thoroughly and allowed a camera despite signage to the contrary. We were on the rail and people were participating in activities that aren't sanctioned and there was no problem there, either. That's not to say it won't be different on New Year's Eve, but that's my recent experience.
I'm getting super excited now...I don't know how to dress. I want to wear a suit, but for sake of comfortability I think I'm going in pajama pants and a t shirt? what do you all think?
Hey gang, It might be a little nasty tomorrow in the city. There is a 40-50% of snow/rain showers with some gusty winds. For those of you coming north it might not be a bad idea to head out early since you guys are going to get hit with snow. Happy and safe travels to everyone.
I'd say just be smart, take it as hit or miss, go with the vibe, and make no mistake, there will be at least one Danny Ponce securitydouche out to ruin your night, especially since he has to work on NYE ... but Corncat shall watch over
*edit- but also, if you are a smoker, I'd worry a lot more about cigarrettes than anything else
We're heading out in a few hours...driving to Philly to spend the night, then taking the train up in the morning. I wanted to wish you all a safe journey and tell you how excited I am to know that I'll be ringing in 2009 with fellow 'Roosters! See some of you at Sunswick. Don't forget your rubbers, er, galoshes!

^^^It's on 33rd ST at 8th Ave I believe (next to the NJ Transit entrance on the corner), there should be a sign hanging over the door or something... it's a pretty sweet way to go in, you totally avoid the clusterfuck on 7th Ave

In the meantime, there’s the Garden—a celebration not only of the new year but of the band’s return to live performance. “After this huge election, and such a big, crazy year that had so much to do with New York for me, to be tying things to a close at the Garden is such a big deal,” says James, who admits to being nervous about his injury while still promising the usual marathon performance, special guests, and new covers. “It’s one of those transformative nights, because no matter how bad the year has been, I feel like I’ve got a new chance.”

I wonder who these special guests could be... It seems like every notable musician/band and their grandmother is putting on a new years show somewhere.
