So last night turned out to be amazing. I knew it would, but i ended going with 6 friends rather that 1, cause 5 of them decided to go at the last minute. We met at the train station in Hamilton NJ and rode into NYC and had a fun train ride taking shots and pictures. Then we got off the train at like 845 and went to the bathroom, took a few more shots and split up. My tickets were in section 8, and they were in section 422 at the top.
So i spent a little over half the show in section 8, and then we went up to join the rest of our group in section 422 to ring in the new year. Totally worth it. It was amazing. Here are some good pics
Rooster (Alice in Chains) Say Hello to Heaven (Temple of the Dog), Black (Pearl Jam) Nothing Man (Pearl Jam) Indifference (Pearl Jam) Fell on Black Days (Soundgarden) Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden) All Apologies (Nirvana) Where Did You Sleep (Nirvana) MIDNIGHT Come as You Are (Nirvana) About a Girl (Nirvana) Lithium (Nirvana) Breed (Nirvana) Hunger Strike (Temple of the Dog)
HOLY CRAP I cant wait to get my hands on this set! WOW! ;D

Just from a setlist standpoint this show isn't nearly as overwhelming as I was anticipating. I didn't get that jaw dropping "ohmyfawkinggodicantbelieveimissedthat" reaction when seeing it like I just did when looking at the Mule show.
But I am still sad that I was nowhere near NYC last night
i cannot even find words to express how amazing this show was. One of the best shows I've ever seen, if not the best, and I had only watched okonos the day before the show and knew nothing whatsoever about mmj. i feel like my life was changed forever by that show and im so happy to have experienced it with all those who were there.
Fantastic show last night. It was great meeting many of you at the pre party. Thank you again Jay for putting that together. It was a great time. The show itself was the typical mind blowing jacket. I will confess that I was a little disappointed at the lack of rarities of there original material but it was a perfect party setlist and celebration. Plus there playing was spot on. All around great night and Happy New Year everyone! ;D
man, seeing the Mule setlist makes me excited for the possibility of mr. haynes dropping by the farm this summer....
and seeing the MMJ setlist reminds me of how quacking awesome this band is.... i wish they would cover Prince's hey nanny nanny Control.... i know they did "i could never take the place of your man" once upon a time.....
edit: pu$$y control.

i hate to sound like the negative one, but i was kind of disappointed in last night's show. it could have just been where i was sitting, but the sound was muddy and the drums were mixed really low. they played great, but i just wasn't blown away by it like a whole lot of you seem to have been.
Oh and a quick shout out to the the group that came up from kentucky that was at the pre party. Forgive me right now for not being able to remember your names. I was the one who guided you guys back to the garden after sunswicks. You guys were awesome!
p.s. I guess we were all way off with our opening song predictions.
^^I don't know where you were sitting, but we were just behind the soundboard, dead center, and the sound couldn't have been better. It was such a great show. I'd say it's right up there with the Roo 06 late-night show as the best MMJ that I've been able to be a part of. I do kinda wish there were a couple less covers and a couple more originals, but I seriously can't complain. Being able to be there for the countdown at MSG in NYC is a priceless experience and one not soon to be forgotten.

I agree about the sound, but only for the first two songs. I think some adjustments were made in the beginning and then it sounded fine.
Another poster had mentioned about being by the soundboard and how it sounded so good. That is correct, when I try to get tickets or see a show I try to get closest to the board. That is where it will sound the best.
I liked the mix of old and new. I can not imaging how hard is is for any band to put together a set list for any show. I'm sure they would love to play them all.
it sort of fucks with new years though... for me, the whole countdown to new years was a non-event in the midst of that show.
being in the pit was amazing. i cant say there was any security at all - i mean, people were smoking just about anything one can smoke the entire show. hell, even before the show and during the break. people had flasks with them too. it was very roo-ish
I thought the sound was pretty good from where we were (floor, Section 6). I had been saying all day that they'd open with a cover...I think someone from that Kentucky group may have that on video . So nice to get a chance to meet a few of you before the show!
This may sound a little silly, but I was kind of hoping that last night's show wouldn't top the 'Roo performance and, in my estimation, it didn't. I thought it was a FANTASTIC show, the energy was amazing, the crowd was fantastic and I did not stop dancing once (so much so that we had to take a pedicab the two blocks back to the hotel b/c I literally could not walk out of MSG). That being said, I also felt a tiny bit of disappointment with the setlist and the special guests (Nicole Atkins? C'mon!) and the general lack of theatrics. I perhaps was hoping for the theatrics of the 2006 Fillmore show and maybe hyped it all in my mind a little too much.

I would like to second the motion and also give a great big shout out to the Kentucky group. I had a ticket to sit my myself in section 300-something. Since they had an extra ticket from one of their friends who'd flaked out, they invited me to come sit with them, and they gave my old ticket to some incredibly grateful, ticketless fan who was outside the venue. They really helped turn my night from something great to something phenomenal.
If anyone knows how to get ahold of them, tell them Boston Jack says hello.

haha, while not the kentuckey group, I met 2 travelers on the train back home...one from Oklahoma and one from Texas. The Texan was a bonnaroovian and a cute one at that :-P
it sort of quacks with new years though... for me, the whole countdown to new years was a non-event in the midst of that show.

I was in line to get a beer during the pre-midnight set break because I wanted to have a drink at midnight - then the taps started drying up around 11:50, and Murphy's Law, the guy in front of me was the last dude to get served. Everyone started arguing with the guy to get more beer, but he kept hemming and hawing about it. Not realizing it was so close to midnight already, I remember hearing "10...9...", so I grabbed my money from the counter and bolted back into the arena as quickly as possible. I got to the concourse some time between 2 and 1, only just getting there in time to see a thousand balloons and a million bits of confetti showering the crowd. It was very nice, but I agree, it was also sort of a non-event.
I agree with Idioteque.(It was nice meeting you by the way.) BEST RUN THRU EVER! After touch me part 2 and run thru, I think I left something in my pants. The pit was a lot of fun except for a couple dbags, but thats comes with it. It wasn't as good as the bonnaroo show, but still up there. I found the countdown online with Celebration being played right after.

^^Just for future reference, embed youtube videos by putting the link in between [youtube][/youtube*] only without the * on the second parts. It's simple!
And thanks for the videos. Definitely seems like a fun way to spend new years. I don't even think I remember the clock striking 12 where I was

Hey Jack...I didn't realize you are on this board! Here are some cute pics of you at Sunswick. Thanks again, Jay...we had a lot of fun (maybe too much, since I insisted on getting off the subway three stops too early on the way back in to the Garden...oops):
like i said yesterday, i thought the show was amazing. I just want to give a shoutout to these really nice people from los angeles who gave us their tickets to the two seats right next to us so soulmate and her husband dale could sit with us in section 35. being able to sit with our friends made the experience that much better for me.
The only thing that bugged me a little about the show was the vibe of the crowd and the countdown. I thought the countdown was weird as hell and it totally harshed my mellow a bit. There were also some people around us who were arguing ALL NIGHT long, and this couple who had the seats next to us (on the other side) refused to sit down at all because someone spit or something next to the rail. like i said, i had a great time, but the crowd there realllly surprised me, at least where we were sitting. it looked like a totally different story in the pit.
oh and the sound was great where we were sitting too

I also thought it was a fantastic show...hell, a fantastic evening overall (lovely meeting all of you at Sunswick, especially Jerzee and the Kentucky crowd!).
But I wouldn't say it was my favorite Jacket show of the year. I also thought the setlist would include more rarities and new covers, and I was hoping for some really surprising special guests (although I love Will Johnson...check out Centro-matic and/or South San Gabriel if you get a chance! Nicole Atkins, on the other hand...pffffft).
I think I may have been a bit spoiled by the painfully good Chicago shows earlier this week; seeing them on NYE was almost Jacket overload (almost!). However, it did make me feel a bit better about missing Roo this year, since they played so many of the same covers!
Ah, I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth. It was a great show, but my expectations might have been too high. That said, would I spend another NYE with the Jacket, given the chance? Hell yes!
