Can anyone tell me how good/bad the sound is for the stages if you're way in the back?
For example, say you're wanting to see one of the headliners on the What stage, but by the time you get over there, there are 79,999 people packed in front of you. I assume that even the monitors are too far away to see much, but does the sound system stand up when you're in the BFE "seats"?
I've only seen one headliner from the way back, that was Petty last year. I seem to remember there being very good sound. Seeing the stage is a different matter, but I could hear everything pretty well.
"Chicago is known as the Windy City, and Montana is called the Big Sky State, so I think that we should somehow combine the two to create the ultimate kite-flying experience. "-Mitch Hedberg
the sound is great aslong as you stay towards the center of the stage. it gets horrible quickly if your off to the side. seriously its really bad. so stay centered and you can be back by the vendors and it will sound great. hell it sounds great in the camprounds that are centered.

i watched all 3 headliners from as far back as you could basiclly be in the what stage area. sounds was fantastic. the only band it was a little odd for was radiohead, when the winds would change direction the sound would become slight muffled for a few second here and there, but nothing to complaing about really.
i was camped near pod 3, right at the end of shakedown street near where shakdown connected to bush branch rd, and we could hear acts like beck on the what stage very clearly. obviously not as loud, but we didnt have to strain at all, it was like a radio was on near by.
so yeah, dont worry about sound, its awesome no matter where you are, youll have a great time.
ps. whats BFE i see people mention it all the time, whats it mean.
The sound from What and Which are great. The sound at the tents is only good if you are in or very very close to the tents. If you are very far back at all from the tents you will hear a cacophony of sounds as the Which Stage music blends with the tent music.

dave matthews was pretty good music to dance to while walking around the camps in 05. we left phil early last year (yes, because of rain) and when were at camp i could hear franklins pretty clearly
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
People in that were in Camp Inforoo can tell you how well the sound carried..especially 7am in the morning when everyone was trying to sleep Stupid sound check!

While I agree, the sound quality is very good, even in the way back (I watched Phil last year from the roof of my jeep, about 30 yards back of tent-only camping). The side you enter on is a little weak, but generally good.
My two problems:
The further you get from the stage, the more people you have socializing rather than listening. Not that it's a bad thing to chat during a show, but if you are trying to just chill out on a blanket towards the back, you might get a little frustrated if you're trying to catch all the notes . . . although perhaps I was just particularlly observant on those nights . . .
The real problem, imo, is with the Which Stage. It can get crowded and sometimes the sound is very poor, I'm sure others can attest to this.
They need to increase the audio and visals for the 2nd stage. I saw the pics of the crowd during Ben Folds,(I was all the way up front for that show, so I had no clue how packed it was) and I was shocked how crowded it was. I heard several complaints of people not being able to hear that well in the back last year.

Yea, we noticed a lot of sound problems with the Which Stage for Buddy Guy & Marley...last year
I thought I was the only one who thought this. I see Buddy Guy every year in his club in Chicago so I was pumped to see him last year at the 'roo...but man was the sound horrible. I heard lots of people liked the show and me and my buddy where like man that sound sucked ass. we left early to get a good spot in the troo music lounge to see mute math.
I came back to see marley later and the sound was better but still shaky in some spots.....The 'roo is the best but not perfect
I am really shot so either I have to be up front or I just hang in the back. So I am always at the back at festies. The sound is great in the back. You can phase out the screams from the crowd or you can join in. You can dance all you want in the back and not worry about hitting ganyone, or you can sit and chill which is something that is impossible in the crowd. If you don't get to far back you can even miss the chatter from others. I love the back. It is the only place that you will find me!!!
