Ok, so my friend and I have been to Roo the past two years and camped in a tent both times. Next year though, we're seriously considering renting an RV. So, I was just curious as to how much renting one costs, how much it costs to fill up the tank (and how often), is a generator necessary and how much do they cost, and maybe anything else that might be important!! Thanks everybody!!
ugh...it was expensive. we rented one for something like 1300 dollars (for a week), plus mileage (700 miles free, 20 cents after that), plus you pay middling costs for running the generator and propane. the worst of all was the gas - 1000 dollars for driving from Minnesota to Bonnaroo and back. mind you, i'm not really a person who watches the price of things too closely, but i still wasn't really enjoying the expenses involved.
and the thing took so long to drive! that was one of the most annoying aspects, because you can't zip along as you would in a car. really, all i wanted the RV for was air conditioning, but perhaps next time i could get a generator and set up a tarp system and get an air conditioner and big fan or something. i really have a bit of a hard time handling the heat, but if i could do that - i'd skip an RV for sure.
on the plus side, the RV was very comfortable. oh, and the generator is built in to most RVs, other than maybe the pop-up camper sort. it hardly used any gas for the time we were there, although we ran it very sparingly. we also didn't use the shower or toilet, since we were in the VIP section and these things were very accessible to us.
we also forgot about tail swing and caused a bit of damage, which unfortunately added to the cost. but you wouldn't do that - so no sense in factoring that in!

The first 3 Roos I went to were in an RV ('03,'04,'05) then in '06 I had to go back to the tent. I looked into rental amounts and from where I am 225 miles from Manchester it was $2,700 with a $500 security deposit included (so $2,200). Gas cost me about $265 round trip this year (450 miles). I say no to the A/C and generator. It makes it so hard to deal with the heat in Centeroo after I get 'soft' in the A/C. I know from experience, last year I missed most of Sunday afternoon because I slipped into my friends RV to catch some A/C and got stuck cause it felt so good. Plus we had cold beers and lots of corn. Hope this helps some......
I've done RVs three years in a row. Shop around and pay attention to the floor plans. Big Class As (tour bus style) are nice but don't have a bed over the cab like a Class C (moving van style). This year we rented a big Class C with a slide out (slide outs give you a LOT more room) in Atlanta for $1600. Not too bad split four ways, but of course you have to factor in gas.
The generator and A/C are a must IMO. Make sure you find out what the generator policy is; most rental places charge you to use it. The place we used this year did not, so we ran it all we wanted. Also the microwave and a/c power generally won't work without the generator running. They don't use up much gas.

We probably got the best deal $ wise but it ended up taking part of a shitty bonnaroo. Our Rv broke down and we rented it from a mom and pop place that don't have their shit together. We ended up having to pay over $500 to get the Rv fixed (reimbursement is still in the process). We paid $1100 total for the RV with mileage and everything. But I would definately reccomend renting from an established Rv rental place. It's worth it! Waking up in the morning and not having to wait in line to take a #2 is awesome lol. A/C is great also. It costs us right at $400 for gas from Cincy,Ohio to Bonnaroo.
My RV was $2200, and probably close to a grand for gas, to & from, Jersey...expensive, yes, but I'd do it a hundred times over rather than camp in a tent for 4 days. I'm no baby, but Bonnaroo camping isn't like camping in the woods w.Mom & Dad....getting whacked outta yer head, passing out, waking up hung over in a tent thats's damp, probably smells, then way too hot...food in a cooler w/ice melting like crazy...using the port-o-schmoo...f*ck that noise....I had a shower every day, a bed to crash in, a fridge, AC, satellite radio, etc, etc....you get what you pay for, I guess....once you go RV, there's no turning back....
Yes, you can set up tents next to your RV (at least last time I did the RV thing 3 years ago you could). You won't have a ton of room, but enough for a couple tents.
I think this depends on the layout of the specific RV and on how cuddly the people are willing to get. First time we went down in an RV we had way more than it could sleep. I ended up in a tent most of the time, which was fine until the sun came up.
I remember reading that they ran electricity to all the rv area for '09. Is that true and if so does anyone have a link to the article?
I don't think that they meant they ran electrical hook ups - i think they just ran electrical to run the light poles instead of having to use the generators that they have used in the past

That was the rumor. It looks like they have electric to the "onsite" campers that you can rent.
It would cost a absolute fortune to run electric to the RV campsites. I don't ever see that happening. Maybe one day they will offer hookups if you are willing to pay for them. I know at some NASCAR tracks that I go to the cost of electric hook up is triple of that of no hookups.
So I'm really excited about going in the RV...shower and A/C will surely be nice, but I do have some questions. I'm a little worried about missing out on the whole camping/tent city aspect of the festival. Can anyone tell me about their experience with this? Also, we are pretty young and like to party, but I have this image in my mind that most RVers are...not so much into the parties. I don't know why I think that, maybe I just picture retired folks road tripping in them or something
Well we have a camper and we are not retired. We are in our late 30's. Although not really into the parting by the camper thing we do go out and have a good time. I'm sure you will find many younger people who rented RV's to party with. There is far too much to do and see, no time to be hanging out by the camper drinking beer. You can save your self a of of cash by just going camping.
Thanks so much!! We really don't party that hard (and we're not that young, I'm the only one in my 20s, everyone else is 30s), but I just like to be considerate of people around me, so I would hate to be staying up late night and being all loud and rowdy and pissing off neighbors. I don't know why I have it in my head that RV people would be any "less cool" than tent people. Whatever, I'm excited about the shows and the great time to be had. I really can't wait!!!! ;D
