Anybody going to Rancid tonight? We are photographing the event, and hopefully Tim will have some time for a short interview... We are very excited about this, as Rancid is one of my all time favorite bands.
It is at Rocketown... We have never been to this venue. Does anyone know anything about it?
Obviously, Michael W. Smith started this effort after the Columbine incident. It is predominately for children. It has a skate park, a few stages and a coffee shop.
The venue sounds very cool. However, unless Rancid has tamed down ALLOT since I saw them last, I find it wild that they would play a "Christian" based venue!!??

Howdy. Rancid is (was) also one of my favorite bands. I'm not going tonight though. Without all the original members I just can't bring myself to go. It's just not the same band to me without Brett Reed. I've seen them 6 times though from between 1995 and 2003, so I did get in some quality Rancid time in my day.
ANYWAY.....the actual stage area where they will play is pretty nice, but I avoid Rockettown like the plague. Metal detectors on the way in. Seriously. I've never been to a venue with metal detectors before going there. No lighters. Made the mistake of having a lighter in my pocket and they wouldn't let me in. No drinking, obviously. It's a great place for the kids. Totally safe place to hang out and have fun. And it's well needed. I would have killed to have had a place like that when I was a teen. But now I'm much older and I really don't feel like going to romper room for shows. I didn't even go see Mastodon there because I just don't like the place.
Don't let my views skew your thoughts though. You might just like it. Have a good show!
wow, what a night...! i'm not even sure where to begin...
it involved great music/venue, indecent exposure, cops and mayhem...
first off, you hit the nail on the head: "And it's well needed. I would have killed to have had a place like that when I was a teen."
we thought that the venue was so great for kids, that we scheduled an interview with 2 folks that run the place. if i had a joint like that to go to as a kid, i would have loved it.
they take care of these kids, they really do. (i will put up the audio soon)
now the good/very quacking ironic stuff...
we missed the first opening act, and started shooting "th' legendary shack shakers" from the photo pit. not bad music at all... (which could be contested, my wife tells me)
a very animated band, FUN to shoot. mid-set, the leader of the band just freaking whips it out... (yup)
i shot all the way through this. why? hell if i know.
ok, so shots of the "dong", and we move on...
rancid comes out, and just LACES it... it sounded great, and they were all damned energetic. honestly, the new drummer brought it, too (yes, it hurt not to see brett reed back there) but he played like he had something to prove, and i liked that.
3 quarters into shooting rancid, and the cops are IN the photo pit telling us we must come outside... (it felt SO good to be sober)
we missed the end of rancid to hand off our "shack shaking" photos to the po-po...
went to the station, and they had no card reader there. (there will NEVER be a "csi-nashville) "detective-x", jen and me rode to our hotel room, in his cop car.
we loaded his thumb drive, chatted for a sec, and he went on his way.
so let's say that we had an eventful night...
i will let you all know when i get my photos up. ya can't have the "dong" shot, though.
