Next Tuesday I leave for a family trip to some all inclusive resort in Jamaica... My family and I have never traveled out of the country before.
Anyone have any experience in Jamaica? Or has anyone been to the resort called Beaches Boscobel? I am kinda worried my family booked a bad location... The beach is small and the whole place is for kids... and noone in my family is below 18... Any information would be great!
dont know about the resort - but we have been to Jamaica only on a cruise stop off tho - so not sure how good our info is. We enjoyed going to the pineapple plantation but going shopping was a horrible experience.
The trip over the mountain to the plantation was an eye opener tho - I was amazed at the poverty level that most of the Jamaicans live in.

Never been, but I've had a few friends from Jamaica and they all said not to leave the resort on your own and go exploring. Leave everything to planned activities.

I have 2 friends that got married and had their honeymoon there within the past few years. They stayed at all-inclusive resorts and that part was wonderful.
They both made the mistake of leaving the resort to "explore" and were hounded by locals to buy their goods and if they said no, they would not leave them alone. Both said that part was not a very pleasant experience and they felt like they could possibly be in danger. They did not leave the resort again, unless it was on an organized excursion.
This is the reason I chose Puerto Rico for my honeymoon - cheap, beautiful and even though it is essentially part of the US, you are on a tropical island I personally don't get staying on an all inclusive resort in a foreign place....... I want to explore and eat local food. Best decision ever!

Ya see the problem is my family and exploring and eating local food could easily turn out to be a horrible experience... very picky people who have barely ventured from the walls of Mississippi... All inclusive is the best bet for your family hehe

right on the nose. The resorts there are usually gorgeous... but outside the resorts Jamaica is quite, well, dirty. There is still alot of beauty to be seen and can be seen.
but the shacks you pass to get there makes you think...
My sister got married in Jamaica about 4 years ago. It was a great time. We stayed at Beaches Sandy Bay. They say not to leave the resort, but you could walk down the beach to the other resorts as well. You will encounter some locals who want you to buy their wares (and corn!) but I never felt threatened. We went on a couple excursions, on to Rick's Cafe where they have cliff diving and we also went shopping but its not all its cracked up to be. Its just all little trinkets and whatever they can emblazon with the word "Jamaica."
Overall, I had a great time. I would not go back because I think there is so much of the world to see that I'd never go to the same destination twice, but I would definitely recommend Jamaica to someone else.

I'm leaving tomorrow for Jamaica!! I'll be in Negril, though, and I'm not sure how far it is from where you're going. If I learn any pointers while I'm there, I'll post them up for you before you leave : )
Watchin' a stretch of road, miles of light explode. Driftin' off a thing I'd never done before. Watchin' a crowd roll in. Out go the lights it begins. A feelin' in my bones I've never felt before...
I stayed in The Sandals resort in the same area and had a good time. The beaches are small and the city is crowded and dirty but that's most of Jamaica. The area was heavily fenced but people were always climbing trees and hanging on the fences trying to sell stuff (legal and illegal) There were even lots of boats with people selling "stuff". Just wave and they pull up on the beach to sell to you.
The resorts (at least Sandals) had plenty to do on-site and lots of varying restaurants so we didn't leave a lot except on tours.
The bike tour of Blue Mountains was a blast and I would recommend it. You are driven to the top of the mountain and mostly coast down so almost anyone can handle it.
Next time I'd go to Negril. It costs more and is on the other side of the island (so know Blue Mtns) but the beaches are bigger and it's supposed to be more "roomy."
You should have a good time but you are in the more crowded, touristy section so be forewarned. There should be plenty to do onsite though (kayaking, snorkeling, scuba, sailing, etc.) and the liquor at our place was all top shelf and the food was usually very good,

Never been to Jamaica, but Puerto Rico is a gorgeous destination with SO MANY different kinds of things to do, and the locals I met were all so nice and helpful ...I don't like the idea of being fenced in to be safe in paradise... though if I someday do go to Jamaica, I am positive I will have an absolute blast regardless!!!

I have also heard not to leave the resort... How did you like Ricks Cafe? Was it worth the 15 dollars to go? I am totally looking forward to the liquor!? Preparing my body now with a couple Becks Dark... Also anyone try the corn there? hehe

I went to JAmaica on a cruise, and I took a tour around the island. First off, you should go to Dunn's River Falls, look it up, its a long waterfall that you can climb up, they prefer you go with a guide, but me and my bro just walked up it. About the vendors, if you show any interest in an item, they will not leave you alone until you buy it. THats pretty much a given, and prepare for BO worse than any hippie at Bonnaroo. I went in 1997, and we were there on tour in a van with my dad. when we stopped a guy was trying to sell my dad trinketsb, and he turned him away then he looked at me and pulled a big ear of corn out of his pocket and wanted sixty for it, i said forty and he said no, i didnt have time to negotiate, so i bought it. It was pretty good and fresh, and made for a great cruise. That was also the only oppurtunity i had to find some, but its out there everywhere, One dude said his tour guide showed him where a huge field was. I also went parasailing and that was awesome. Jamiaca is awesome.
It's kind of like bonnaroo when you are walking down the beach you can smell the corn in the air and you hear the locals saying in very low inconspicuous voices "shrooms, ganga?".
