So, I'm guessing Phish is making a comeback at some point in the near future. I want to see that, but I know nothing at all about this band. I don't know the names of any songs or albums... But you do!

My absolute favorite is "Rift". To me, that album is a perfect cohesion of all the elements that made them great: complex compositions; tight, virtuoso playing; imagination and humor; and simply great songs.

i always liked Hoist...but im probably more of a casual fan...i've been to 3 shows maybe. It seems like this is not a popular choice amongst die-hards.

My favorite album also. Lawn Boy is a close second. A great place to start though is with the live album "A Live One". That is essential listening when it comes to Phish. That will give you a great feel for what the band is all about. I would pick that up first.
Can't go wrong with Billy Breaths.....I haven't been a Phish fan for that long but the album that really got me into them is Round Room. From what I've read it one of their less well received albums but I love it. 46 days, Round Room, mexican cousin....good stuff
for me its "Story of A ghost" it just has a nice flow and some of my favorite phish tunes, too many to mention, but I must say "Guyute" is a adventure you can take in 8 minutes. "Farmhouse" is what I normally recommend to a Phish novice. Farmhouse > Story is a great progression for getting into them.

If you *have* to go with a studio album--go with Rift or Billy Breathes, anything after that is a waste of time when there's all of this to listen to: spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p8WKkpP-TKpO1VnQgcff6EQ&gid=3 (that link covers just about every show available out there) If you need help narrowing it down from there, I'd be happy to give some suggestions--but you can't go wrong with anything from '94 and '95.
Watchin' a stretch of road, miles of light explode. Driftin' off a thing I'd never done before. Watchin' a crowd roll in. Out go the lights it begins. A feelin' in my bones I've never felt before...

Junta Lawn Boy Picture of Nectar Hoist A Live One Walnut Creek DVD
any of those albums are damn near perfect!! get Mike Gordon's new album "the Green Sparrow" his stuff is great... i'm sure phish will be playing a lot of that
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
I like Rift and Story of the Ghost... But truly they must listened to live... Of which I could recommend a crap-ton of shows, but will say 12/7/97 (Nutter Center, Dayton, OH) and the summer '99 two night stand at Deer Creek (7/25 and 7/26) are pretty amazing

My favorite Phish is SOTG without a doubt... when it first came out I couldn't stand it oddly enough, but soon thereafter it grew to be my favorite. It has sort of a dark, atmospheric funk sound that takes me away. Rift is my second favorite... again it's sort of a dark, moody album. The first time I heard it I was staring out the window of a bus late at night during a wild snowstorm in the middle of nowhere... that image will always correspond with the album to me. I recently found an old show I had from 92 in Vermont (right around when rift came out), and I was reading a little about it on phish.net and there is a really interesting interview with trey about the album:
"`On the new record, there's a really complex fugue (a musical form based on repetition of a single theme) based on the All Things Considered theme,'' explains guitarist Trey Anastasio from a hotel in Nashville, where the band has just completed their newest LP, Rift. ``If I was successful -- and I think I was -- listeners should be able to follow the theme in infinite variety and infinite sameness. It should be very glorious.''
The central idea of Rift, said Anastasio, is more firmly grounded in real life than the cornucopia of surrealism in Nectar.
``It takes place in one night's worth of dreaming of one guy,'' he explains. ``It's just a chart of this guy's dreams. Each song is one dream. It's quite unlike anything we've ever done before. It's a real departure.'"
