My parents are filling out my little brother's graduation ad to put in the yearbook. My brother is just as much into music as I am, so I suggested putting in a rock and roll quote.
Can anybody help me with some good quotes about graduation, life, moving on, the future, etc etc etc? Maybe like one related to your path in life or something?
He's really into the Grateful Dead, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, etc. so if it was one of those bands that would be great. I'm trying to do some research but if I have a bunch of people looking, I figure it would be even better.
Edit: My mother has already nixed "What a long strange trip it's been" so that one's out of the question....
"Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most"
Ozzy Osbourne
* Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us.
* I'm shopping around for something to do that no one will like.
* We are all bozos on the same bus
* Truth is something you stumble into when you think you're going someplace else.
Jerry Garcia
* I have one foot in the past, one foot in the future, and I'm pissing on the present.
* The music exists in the universe, and if you're lucky enough, or strong enough, to get your ego out of the way, the music comes through you.
Trey Anastasio
* We may not be able to defeat these swine, but we don't have to join them. o As quoted in Kingdom of Fear (2003) by Hunter S. Thompson
* Sometimes you say things in songs even if there's a small chance of them being true. And sometimes you say things that have nothing to do with the truth of what you want to say and sometimes you say things that everyone knows to be true. Then again, at the same time, you're thinking that the only truth on earth is that there is no truth on it. Whatever you are saying, you're saying in a ricky-tick way. There's never time to reflect. You stitched and pressed and packed and drove, is what you did. o Chronicles (2004)
Bob Dylan

How about In The Light, by Zeppelin? That has all sorts of lyrics about paths and stuff....or Good Times, Bad Times--"In the days of my youth I was told...yadda, yadda yadda."

"Many dreams come true and some have silver linings I live for my dreams and a pocket full of gold
Mellow is the man Who knows what he's been missing Many many man Can't see the open road"
-Led Zeppelin, Over the Hills and far Away
More will likely come to me. Bob Marely has a great deal of profound statements in his songs as does Hendrix. I can't really give this much attention now though. If you're still looking tomorrow I'll try to help.

Okay well we've quickly covered all of the obvious cliched lyrics...
This is from a famous introduction that Bruce Springsteen did once in concert:
"But anyway, my father always said "You know, you should be a lawyer. You know, you get, get a little something for yourself." You know? And my mother, you know, she used to say "no, no, no, no. He should be, he should be an author. He should write books. You know, you should... That's a good life, you can get a little something for yourself." Well, what they didn't understand was, was that I wanted everything. And so you guys, one of you guys wanted a lawyer, and the other one wanted an author. Well, tonight, you'se are both just gonna have to settle for Rock 'N' Roll."
Old men sing about their dreams. Women laugh and children scream, And the band keeps playin' on. 'the music never stopped' grateful dead
OR Well, the cool breeze came on Tuesday, And the corn's a bumper crop. The fields are full of dancing, Full of singing and romancing, 'Cause the music never stopped.
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
“Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar. You're gonna go far, fly high, You're never gonna die, You're gonna make it if you try; They're gonna love you...And did we tell you the name of the game, boy, We call it Riding the Gravy Train.” - Pink Floyd

Probably most appropriate for a graduation moment are lyrics from 'Eyes of the World' ...
Right outside this lazy summer home you ain't got time to call your soul a critic no. Right outside the lazy gate of winter's summer home, wond'rin' where the nut-thatch winters, wings a mile long just carried the bird away.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world, the heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own. Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin' brings, But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenin's and songs of it's own.
There comes a redeemer, and he slowly too fades away, And there follows his wagon behind him that's loaded with clay. And the seeds that were silent all burst into bloom, and decay, and night comes so quiet, it's close on the heels of the day.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world, the heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own. Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin' brings, But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenin's and songs of it's own.
Sometimes we live no particular way but our own, And sometimes we visit your country and live in your home, sometimes we ride on your horses, sometimes we walk alone, sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world, the heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own. Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin' brings, But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenin's and songs of it's own esp these verses...
I've always liked Frank Zappa's view of the world...
Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love. Love is not music. Music is THE BEST.

Instead of dirt and poison, we have rather chosen to fill our hives with honey and wax; thus furnishing mankind with the two noblest of things, which are sweetness and light.

Best of luck to your brother!
To add to those.
-Beware of the fish people, they are the true enemy.
-Let's not be too tough on our own ignorance. It's the thing that makes America great. If America weren't incomparably ignorant, how could we have tolerated the last eight years?
-Information doesn't kill you.
-Whatever you have to do to have a good time, let's get on with it, so long as it doesn't cause a murder.
Zappa's stuff has slowly moved up into being my favorite band and Frank is my favorite guitarist. Can't get enough of his stuff, wish this new ZPZ tour wasn't the 400 seat venue thing. Sorry for getting OT.
