I second the vote for best set of weekend. I haven't got a work out like that at a show in a long time! Afterwards I went to Chris Rock and had to just sit down and regather my strength for a while before Metallica.
The energy that was in the crowd amazed me. I was totally surprised by how well her performance was.
Oh my God, it was totally quacking nuts. I was literally front row center for her performance, and was one of the people who got up on stage with her towards the end. Of all the performers at Bonnaroo this year, I wouldn't say MIA is my favorite musician - probably not even in the top ten... but I had way more fun at her show than I've had at any other show in my life - no joke. One of the highlights of my weekend, for sure.
And to think, I was planning to skip the 45 minutes of her set to see Willie Nelson (nothing against Willie, but I heard his show was kind of lackluster)
I have a video up on YouTube of the chaos as seen from on stage, if anyone's interested.
^I'd be very interested to see that, actually...since I missed her show. Can't remember who I was seeing instead, but I think my friend had convinced me to stay put instead of head over to MIA.
Well, here it is, then - Let's just say I won't be winning any cinematography awards for it... but you try getting a clear shot and a steady picture with 80 unwashed Roosters (81, counting myself) dancing as hard as they were in such a tight space.

More power to you all who enjoyed her set, because I thought it was the absolute low point of the weekend. I arrived early for her, but left after a couple songs (which is also after she started late and after she yelled at her sound guy about mixing issues). She was OK, but the crowd was just terrible. Reprehensible, really. I was appalled at how people were treating other people, and how aggressive the atmosphere was. Even if she had been playing the show of a lifetime up there, I couldn't have enjoyed it because of what was going on around me. I booked it and chilled at the fireball/smoke ring apparatus instead.
What were people doing that was so bad? Was there a lot of pushing or something? As I said, I was right up front, and I kind of accepted the fact that being so close, I'd be pushed around a lot. In fact, the only time I got a bad vibe at a show all weekend was with the pre-Kanye fiasco.

I'd be interested too. I was getting bumped around a lot but it wasnt angry or really aggressive. It was mostly people dancing in a very small space.
But depending on where you were it could have been vastly different. I've been hearing great things about the Sigur Ros show but where I was standing was awful and I ended up cutting out early.

Sorry to hear that, mate. It really sucks when stuff like that happens. Where were you standing? I cut out early too, but only because my legs were killing me and I really had to pee. Then I sat on the grass and listened from outside, which was nice. I'd be pissed if that happened, at say, Gogol Bordello, but Sigur Ros is more like, sitting down music, you know? Anyway, I figured that I could still hear them perfectly, and I could sort of see their heads through the crowd, so it didn't bother me too much.

So, better late than never for a response? For starters, people were very pissy with other people before the show began. I stood next to a small group of people who knew each other, and couldn't help but hear continual bitching from them about the heat, the waiting, and of course everyone else around them. Meanwhile, others were pushing and shoving their way through to get a good spot. I felt zero crowd ethics or mutual respect. And again, when M.I.A. finally did start she wasn't much more positive or respectful. Add to that the aggressive slam-dancing and crowd surfing that immediately broke out (which I suppose wouldn't have been so bad if I expected it like you did). I really looked forward to her show, but it was a low point for me.
