I'm like the only person in existence that doesn't like this band. I mean, I like Frank, but I really, really have a hard time finding something to like in this band.
That said, I'd have no problem with them playing, besides the fact that they'd no doubt take up a huge slot. So I've got to say no.
Back in high school, all I'd really known was "Monkey Gone to Heaven," "Alec Eiffel" and "Here Comes Your Man." Those songs weren't quite my thing at the time.
I didn't warm up to them until freshman year of college, watching Fight Club for the first time. I hadn't yet heard "Where Is My Mind?" but I recognized the band. That was my conversion. I went out and bought Doolittle the next day.
I saw them nine times on the reunion tour, and it was always a great show. They deserve a set at Bonnaroo. The question is: do they want it?
As much as I love them, I don't see them as a headliner. Pre-headliner, yes. They make for a nice sunset slot. Saw them pre-headline for Radiohead at Coachella and for Weezer at Lollapalooza (and they blew them out of the water.)
I actually think they'd make fantastic late-night fare, too.
I respectfully disagree with you, Kdogg. I thought that they were the fourth best of the last four bands to play that night at Lolla, behind Weezer, Primus and (surprisingly) Billy Idol.
They were fine and all but they just don't connect with me. Weezer was crisp and rockin', Primus was playing in front of a giant inflatable rubber duck and Billy Idol was chock full of sneering, playful bravado. Pixies just seemed to go through the motions.
That said, I'd check them out again if there wasn't somebody else I was more interested in. (Though I'd be very disappointed with them as a headliner.)

to each their own. cd I had the exact opposite opinion. I cant really review Primus as I was up front waiting for Pixies during their set but I thought they blew Weezer and Billy Idol away. Honestly, I thought Weezer was terrible and left to have what turned out to be an awesome time watching Digable Planets.
I'd love to see the Pixies again. It'd be damn tough to tear me away from that set.
I think Primus & Pixies owned those main stages that day. I sacrificed a good spot at the Pixies for a great spot at Primus.
I'll admit it wasn't the best Pixies show I've seen... and they'd been on the reunion tour for a year and a half at that point. It was still a solid reliable set for them, I think, but I know it wasn't their best. They didn't dust off any b-sides ("Bailey's Walk" at the Milwaukee show was a highlight of the nine shows I saw) or play multiple versions of "Wave of Mutilation" like they did at other shows.
But that Lollapalooza was a bit different. That year, it was hastily arranged (line-up was all booked the month prior to the festival because of uncertainty whether it would even happen) and there were alternating main stages. With alternating main stages came a tight schedule that they had to adhere to. They only had an hour that year, didn't they?
Give them two hours alone onstage and you'll probably experience a better performance than they gave Lolla. Give them 90 minutes, like they'd probably get at Bonnaroo, and you'll have a nice happy medium between their Lolla set and their headliner set.
