I went to 05, 07, and 08 and I had a great time every year. It was different every year but that being said, I had a great time every year. The first year I went I had to have fun by myself because no one else I went with was having fun. The second and third years, the person I went with was fun plus we took the time to meet our neighbors and party with them.
If you have been multiple times and you don't have fun anymore, thats fine but I'll bet you that 90% of the people who went for the first time in '08 had the time of their lives and would tell you as much.
Stop trying to chase your first high. I think I am lucky because of the three I have been to, my first one wasn't that great. I mean, Widespread played twice, Trey sucked, it rained off and on all day Friday and Saturday, not a stellar weekend.
As far as community, I think that largely depends on you. The first year I went, I didn't speak to any of my neighbors. The second time I went I made great friends with one tent near us. The third time I went, I hung out with a bunch of people from three of the campsites near us. It was loads of fun. And yet, even in the middle of that, the people in the tent one campsite over from us never talked to us or even really came out of their tent. Did they have as much fun as us, probably not.
I am rambling now, and I am not going to go in '09 unless I win the lottery (I have other, big, big, plans, for later in the year) but I would go in a second if I thought it were even remotely practical.
It's definitely not the same people or the same festival it was when I first went 4 1/2 years ago, but if it was I'd be pretty bored. I grow and change and bonnaroo should too. I have tried other festivals and had some good times, but I guess something about roo just suits me well, even if I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm still happy the moment I land on the farm until the moment I leave, and until that stops happening or some other festival does it better - for me - I'll be returning to roo every year (major catastrophes aside).
