Merl Saunders, a master of the Hammond B-3, died this week in SF. There were periods in the 70s when the Dead weren't doing much and Jerry Garcia would play concerts with Saunders as Legions of Mary or Garcia/Saunders. Recordings are widely available. Saunders funky jazzy vibe (he was a disciple of Jimmy Smith - a god to many of those who appreciate the B-3) allowed Jerry to explore genres and directions different from what he did with the Dead or other more rootsy or bluegrassy projects. He'll be missed.
