Umphrey's has just announced a new album for release on January 20th. It is titled Mantis and was all written in the studio, so it will be the first time hearing the songs. It sounds like they are going a little different direction with this album and I'm expecting a little different direction with this album, probably more of the heavier/progier stuff like their new tour songs. I'm sure this has been on umphreak for a bit, but here it is for the rest of us.
"We are thrilled to reveal the pre-order details for our new album Mantis, which will be released on January 20, 2009. On Inauguration Day, when our country turns a page in its history, we are writing a new chapter of our own.
Our approach to this studio project has been very different than with those preceding it. While you may find one or two vaguely familiar passages on the new album, for all intents and purposes, this is an album consisting entirely of new music. And while it retains the hallmark Umphrey's McGee sound, we feel as though we have produced a body of work that pushes the envelope in composition, arrangement, and group interplay. Because of this, we view this album as the centerpiece of a new era in the evolution of Umphrey's McGee. We are extremely proud of Mantis, and look forward to taking the material for a test run where we thrive--sharing the experience with you live and without a net. Since the songs were realized in the studio rather than on the road, expect them to get a serious workout in 2009 and beyond. We look forward to joining you on tour and watch how the songs change, evolve, and grow as we experiment, deconstruct, reconstruct, and discover the full potential of the new material in a live context.
Given that this new approach to recording found us pushing ourselves to innovate in a studio setting, we wanted to extend that innovation to push the traditional notion of an "album" and invite you to join in a unique pre-order experience."
Love how they are doing this pre order. I went with the deluxe package. "The deluxe package includes: a copy of Mantis on CD, a copy of Mantis on 180g vinyl, a DVD that includes the Umphrey's McGee 10th Anniversary Retrospective and other unreleased videos, a Mantis poster, and some other treats from the Umphrey's HQ, all in a hand-signed Mantis box set. Not all package contents will be the same, and in each you will find some personal additions from the band members themselves."
It's also really cool that the day it's released you can download a digital copy of the album too, so if your order doesn't arrive on time you can still hear the album when it's released. Having not heard the material, I'm real excited for this to come out.

Bump. I am not quite sure how to feel about this album. They made a real studio album, a lot of singing, not a lot of jamming. The first half reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd, very interested in seeing how this album translates live. Now lets bring on all the sweet bonus stuff!

I feel much the same way. So far everyone I've talked to has been head over heels for the new material, but it's really going to have to grow on me. Much less guitar-driven, much less energetic and driving. The different approach they took this time (going to the studio to compose and record instead of playing around with new material at live shows) is very evident. I can't say I'm loving the result, but we'll see how I'm feeling after a week of listens.

I'm a fan. I love that they really go the opposite way of every other "jam" band out there, and actually make a cohesive studio album, as opposed to a random collection of songs. Good stuff.

I think this is a good album. Nothing extraordinary stands out but overall some solid work. Cannot wait to hear how the songs are played live and the jams they incorporate with it.

I will say i was really suprised when I heard it. I was expecting them to go in the WBG direction, as I read a lot about Jake enjoying getting back to his metal roots.

i am looking forward to hearing the rest live but on monday, 'made to measure' and 'cemetary walk' were a-mazing. they fit right in a short but sweet lil setlist before they signed autographs. can't wait to hear cemetary walk > cemetary walk II > turn and run live!
oh yeah, i love the vic theater.
One Set The Floor, Got Your Milk (Right Here) > The Triple Wide > Nemo > The Triple Wide* > Nemo, Made to Measure > Miss Tinkle's Overture, Anchor Drops, Cemetery Walk** Encore All In Time Notes Mantis CD release party; simulcast on 93.XRT * with Alex's House jam ** first time played, original
I liked track 5 kinda, thats really about it tho it sounds pretty generic to me I've realized tho I just don't like the way umphreys play their instruments so my opinion is pretty meaningless on this topic.
