Don't know about cheap on NYE (Chick-Fil-A Bowl on NYE too!!), but there are Days Inn, Holiday Inn, Super 8, Quality Inn, and I'm sure other within walking distance of The Tabernacle. Check the Hyatt Regency too, In years past on NYE I have stayed there for about the same money as the "cheapies". I usually stay at the Days Inn or Super 8 (both are dumpy but OK) on NYE. You can stay alot cheaper if you don't stay within walking distance. Be aware that Marta subways stop at 1 AM. I usually "Panic" on NYE, but since they are in Denver this year, I'm going to Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeski at the Fox and staying at the Georgia Terrace (not cheap, but across the street from the Fox). Beware of the Chick-Fil-A bowl parade on NYE 12:30-2:00 PM, this causes traffic problem in the area.
Things to do: (within walking distance) Georgia Aquarium, Hard Rock Cafe, CNN tour, Coca-Cola Museum, If you don't go to Atlanta often Underground Atlanta is interesting. You can drive to the Varsity Restarant (approx 1 mile) (worlds largest fast food restarant), See the famous General Locomotive (Civil War History) approx 10 miles from downtown up I-75. Martin Luther King Historic district is also close. Little Five Points (don't confuse this with "Five Points" which in near Underground Atlanta) is a bohemian district a few miles from downtown. The Clairmont Lounge is a campy burlesque club within a few mile drive.

if your cool with it the parking garage across the way from the tabby doesnt seem to mind if you sleep there even saw a kid with a tent up inside the garage which was weird being freezing and all. if you dont mind driving a bit hotels by my place (15-20 minutes north) are maybe 40 a night.
