Just curious if anyone else thought why the suits over at Bonnaroo brought back early bird tickets. I was sitting around thinking about this, and came up with three possibilities.
1. Trying to get some cash advance for a serious epic lineup. 2. Trying to have a better chance for a sell out this year 3. Just trying to please roo faithfuls.
In all of my dreams I hope it's because of reason 1, but probably not.
To me it seems that the powers that be realize that come next year alot of people will be a little tight on the cash front. To try and get around that they are trying to get tickets sold while everyone is Christmas shopping, and are a little more generous with their money.

With the low turn-out last year, they are doing whatever it takes to sell more tickets. Gas prices hurt attendance last year and the bad economy is likely to hurt it this year.
Still I say all 3 factors listed likely helped bring back Early Bird tix. (or at least we can hope that #1 is part of their thinking.)

I'd have to agree with this completely. They were roughly 10k short of their usual capacity this past year, and thats about a 2.5 million dollars in ticket sales alone that they missed out on. I think Superfly wants another sellout this year
I think gas had a lot to do with it the low turn out, as I stated in another thread, it took us close to 1000 just to go up there. I really hope #1 is the factor.
As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!

Ouch
If gas is going to cost you that much this year, you should really look into flying. The shuttle buses Roo provides are great (not to mention there's about 500000 people at WalMart after the fest offering rides to the airport for cash). My ticket from Nashville to Philly was only about $130, not sure how much a round trip is but it's definetly alot less than $1000

Oh - I had to go look up Gainesville to Nashville - round trip - it is $383.00 even if you buy it this early - that's on Delta
So figure - if they had 4 people in the car - even at $1000 for gas - it was still cheaper to drive

Superior Wi (the most northwestern part of Wisconsin) and it was 400 total, im hoping to cut that in half this year now that gas is 2/5 of what it was during June last year.

It is only like 1000 miles round trip did you drive an RV? I would not take anything on a trip that cost me a dollar per mile to drive.

That was the problem, we do not have a major airport here, we have a regional and then to go to jax is not bad, but I really would not know how to take all of my stuff! So yeah, I would love to fly, just really suck at packing...and drink a ton of water and beer!

Yes we were pulling a camper trailer, but my brother and his buddies came up from Miami, pulling it with a land cruiser that only takes 93 octane! He really had a hard time with the heat and no sleep in 07 and said that he was bringing that trailer if it killed him. I know that between the four of us it came out to about 250 in gas per person there and back. well probably more like 230-235.

I suspect that while all three may be a factor, I think it's much more likely that they are looking for a cash infusion for infrastructure improvements. (When they did it two years ago the prevailing assumption was that they needed the early cash to buy the farm.)
Also, it can't hurt to have their tickets on sale before the rest of the competition (Coachella, Lollapalooza, ec.) or to have them available as buzz builds. Now someone can hear about the festival and buy their ticket immediately instead of running the risk that their potential ticket buyer forgets or loses interest while waiting for tix to go on sale. (As long as they don't want to buy a ticket in January, I guess!!!)

I think you're right about this, too. You don't really consider transportation costs this time of year because of how relatively cheap gas is right now.

Honestly it is hard to get a line of credit for operating capital these days. It may just be they need presale numbers to get the cash from the bank to prove they can pay back the lineup money. Like a condo developer who has to presell x number of units to get the financing to build the condos. I mean they do not really make much vs what it costs to put on this fest.
Well - and I just realized there may be another factor - normally 'roo is the weekend after Wakaruse - by them changing weekends - they are now in competition. I know waka is a much smaller festival but i also know lots of people went straight from Waka to 'roo - now there is not that convenience and a choice has to be made

Some of my friends actually go to Wakarusa instead of Bonnaroo because they feel Roo has sold out. I'd go to both if I had the $$.
I might go to Wakarusa this year b/c my brother just moved to Kansas and it is like an hour from Lawrence. It'd be a two in one trip.

I would not jump to conclusions here as the dates for Wakarusa 2009 have yet to be officialy confirmed. There has been a number of rumors backed up by a number of articles from various media outlets claiming that both the date and location for Wakarusa may be changing for 2009. Even though Wakarusa is a smaller festival than Bonnaroo the organizers should be well aware of the fact that many people do attend both festivals.
There has even been a band confirm that they will be playing Wakarusa on June 5-6.
I would tend to agree that the early bird offering is more than likely just an attempt to offer as many options and opportunities as possible for people to purchase tickets during tough economic times.
Even in these tough times I doubt they will have trouble getting financing as they have been doing this for a number of years and have very good collateral (The Farm).
Of course I would love it if another reason is to reward all of those who are loyal enough to buy tickets without a lineup with a chance to buy tickets before they reveal a lineup so great that tickets will be sure to sell out quickly when they go on sale after everyone knows about it.

I would love to think the early bird tix were a harbinger of awesome things (and there's certainly a part of me that'd giddily entertaining that thought) but realistically I don't think it means anything really. I'm thinking maybe last year was the fluke. Last year we expected early birds and when there weren't any we thought it was a sign of big things a-comin'...and now the early birds are back and...we think its a sign of big things a-comin'? I'm not convinced there wasn't actually something in the works last year that didn't pan out, because a few things sort of didn't add up, but either way I've gotta admit that I don't think early birds mean anything about the lineup.
That said, I will now happily return to daydreaming about what big news superfly might have in store for us!

sweet mother of pearl. never have i loved my prius so much. we had a 2000 mile round trip from san antonio, tx and gas total was 250$ MAX.
the early bird tickets don't have a cheaper price than the first tier tickets do they? my grandmother has already promised to pick up my ticket as my master's graduation present, but i do want to wait to see the line-up.
