but I just can't understand the appeal of a cow bell and singing about egg salad or whatever....
For real. Why can't they write more songs expressing teen angst and lamenting the trials of white middle class life?
Hey if that's what you're feeling, wouldn't you want music that reflects that? However if you are in fact in the land of Gamehendge and worried about Wilson king of Prussia obtaining the Helping Friendly Book, than Phish would speak more to you.

camden and last night are both better sets than either roo set IMO.
as for the roo...friday is great on paper but the set seemed kind of rushed and some of the jams just weren't tight at all. i expected more from the set...either play fewer songs and truly play them, or play a set like than and go late. don't hurry through everything just trying to get more in.
sunday started out raging. first set was just straight fire, then when they opened the 2nd set with R&R i thought we were in for another rager...but they killed all of the momentum until first tube IMO. lights i didn't like at all, 46 days is not one of my faves, limb by limb started to get things going again, just to crush the groove again with farmhouse & bdtnl>prince caspian. i think the 2nd set really coulda used a piper, llama, or something just rocking out to spice it up. first set i give a 10, second i give about a 6.
who can really complain though...at least we're critiquing shows because they're playing again! can't wait to see fall tour announced.

To be fair, Gamehendge is more than twenty years old. Phish lyrics from the last twelve years or so are a lot more likely to resonate with people not living in a fantasy land. But it's true, the lyrics are not the reason most people love Phish.

The lyrics are there so they have something to jam around.
i love that when they played farmhouse, i got all excited because i like that song, and most of you seemed to hate it.
Farmhouse was one of the first songs that hooked me into phish. Personally to me it just makes me think of good times with my friends so I love it
Farmhouse was the first song that got me too.. i was at a show in Athens, GA, probably 8 years ago (does that sound right...)
I can't wait to watch sunday's set on Fuse this weekend.. they're playing phish, bruce, and a bunch of others like Snoop Dogg (lol) at 9e/8c on Saturday fuse.tv/tours/bonnaroo-09/. I'm home packing all weekend getting ready to move, so I'm gonna have it blasting through the surround sound set up before I unhook it all!!!

One of the reasons I love Phish is for their nonsensical lyrics, which often take on meanings of their own when performed live -they're sort of like haikus almost: "whatever you do take care of your shoes" :-)
Amazing: Phish, Bruce, Amadou & Mariam, Vieux Farke Toure, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Wilco, NIN Good to great: Animal Collective, NIN, Jimmy Buffet, King Sunny Ade, Tobacco, MGMT, Passion Pit, Kraak & Smack Glad to have seen: Oakenfold, Grizzly Bear, Beastie Boys, of Montreal, Snoop Dogg
Yeah one night was weak, and now I have to shave off my stubble and go back to real life again . Phish tour is over for Jess, I had a freakin blast though.
^^^I totally get what you're saying man, and my use of the word "murdering" was definitely way too harsh, but what can I say... I love to throw comments like that out every now and then just to get some people riled up. No doubt in my mind that this was probably one of Trey's happiest moments of his life, jamming with a childhood idol of his. It was a nostalgic moment for the band and several people in the audience. Hell, I was at the show with Mojo here who was in high heaven at this point in the show and I even commented to him in the middle of Mustang Sally how he must be at an all time high witnessing what was going on in front of him. It just wasn't my thing. I'm glad that you can acknowledge that this doesn't really mean I don't know jack about music. I got all the respect in the world for Bruce and what he's brought to the music biz, I just prefer not to hear him... especially when I'm in the mindset of seeing Phish. But hey, like you said Mustang Sally was pretty awesome and if they had stuck to non-Bruce songs with him on stage I probably would have had a completely different opinion of his presence on stage.
yes Strumm I think that was what it was bro the use of "murdering the set".. I should not have been so harsh on ya and lashed out saying you don't know good music. And it does not seem that are tastes are far off at all. Because as I have stated its not that I thought any of the songs of the collaboration were great (or even that good, for that matter) it was more the overall feel of how happy Trey was. So I apologise, I would have done so sooner but have not been on computer for 2 days. I still think Blinded by the light could have been epic.
And Strumm I DO realise what your saying about Bruce ruining the flow I just did not necessarily get that feel ......again except when they ripped into the Glory Days and then left stage together without another Phish tune. Its not even really right that I say I did not get the feel because I sort of did, I mean hell they just jammed Antelope keep it going boys I hear you, but it was transposed with a different feeling of seeing one of my guitar heros up on stage with one of his heros and how happy he was to be there. The set was nice up until that point some great moments..Gotta Jiboo (not my favorite song but had to love it that night) Gin always fun and a good one from what I recall. Acdc and NICU were pretty standard with no surprises but solid. Otherwise good not really great renditions of the rest.

I'm glad to have seen these shows - having not seen the band since 2003, I was really looking forward to them. And on some levels they delivered. For instance, everything about Friday's set after "Free" was terrific. And I thought the first set of Sunday was quite good. My only problem with the shows is the same one I've had with most late-period Phish, where their shows seem more like a collection of songs rather than a cohesive event, if that makes sense. There's very little flow, and it seems as though they've more or less given up on the type of jamming and transitioning (segues in particular) that made them special, i.e. they jam out, you don't know where it's going to go, if it's going to start a new song, loop back around, etc. That type of stuff makes the difference for me.
Very enjoyable shows, both of them. I can only hope they keep moving upward from here.
Oh I completely agree and understand what you mean about the collection of songs as I stated earlier in this thread I said just that Sat. to many a person and most did not get what I meant. So your saying after free there was more [glow=red,2,300]flow[/glow] to the tail end of the set than the funk packed collection of songs begining I can agree to that for the most part. Although, I must say however disjointed I loved alot of that first half funk DWD, Stash was great, Wolfman's and of course the epic, not funky, Divided sky (a song I have not caught in 19 years my last one was Wetlands 9-13-90) been waiting a long ass time for that one.

Jack Johnson wasn't technically a headliner, but that's only because ABB dropped out of Sunday. He was billed ahead of Widespread Panic and they sold the move as having a double headliner on Saturday.
But I agree as far as collaborations go: Phish & Springsteen > Jack Johnson & Vedder
Jack was and certainly is no headliner last year or any other year and lets face it Jack & Eddie pales in comparison to Phish and Bruce IMO but I would think in most people's opinions as well. Except I guess rabid Jacj J fans....are there really such people

Dude, you took the words right out of my mouth....as Meatloaf would say I am no fan of Caspian, 46 days or really even limb by limb and the new one Backwards down the # line does not do much for me either. First tube was sweet
sorry for the TRIPLE post have not been here in like 3 days and I guess had a bunch to say.
