If Phish were to headline two nights, then I feel like there would have to be a Thursday night headliner to balance it out a bit.
Why?
WSP has played two headlining slots before.
Because, since 2002, the festival has continually grown in size, adding more and more names to the lineup each year and attracting a wider audience. It is no longer the relatively small fest it was in its first two or three years.
As the music festival market has made something of a comeback over the last few years, there is an ever increasing demand to compete. Coachella booked Prince and Roger Waters last year. Lollapalooza got Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine. Bonnaroo has had to keep up with these heavyweight names.
I have no doubt in my mind that a fest with two nights of Phish would sell out, and I also have no doubt that I'd have a good time there if Phish did play.
What I meant was that, in order for me to decide to go to Bonnaroo this year, and to spend all that money and do all that preparation, two nights of Phish and one night of someone else wouldn't be enough to get me to commit to going.
I don't mind having two nights of jam headliners. In fact, I think the festival should get back to its roots a bit, while still continuing to showcase the most popular, non-jam bands of more recent years. If they did Phish on Saturday and, let's say The Dead on Sunday, but with someone non-jammy on Friday, I would still go. I just like some variety when I go to a festival.
The whole "Phish shouldn't play 2 nights" posts are f*ckin hilarious. Clearly you people who are posting this are not very well versed in Phish, their fans, the way they play, or the fact that Bonnaroo is essentially the Phish Festival format crossed with the NOLA jazz fest format.
Phish not only WILL play 2 nights, but they deserve no less. There will be as much variety in the 2 shows Phish plays as you will get the entire weekend seeing many different bands. Their success is single-handedly responsible for many of the bands that have become Roo regulars, such as tDB, Umphrey's McGee, and of course Trey Anastasio. Hell Trey Anastasio alone brought thousands and thousands of fans to the first Bonnaroo for just Sunday!
There was a time when fans would have clamored for Phish to play Bonnaroo for 2 nights. Those were the days when Bonnaroo fans were primarily jamband fans. Those days are gone, but the fact of the matter is, Bonnaroo didn't sell out last year, and has struggled to sell out the last 2 years. Phish playing 2 nights will almost guarantee a sell out.
Those of you who don't think Phish deserves two nights are flat out wrong. I'm sorry, you just are. I've gone to EVERY SINGLE BONNAROO, and can tell you as a veteran of the festival, they deserve 2 nights, and no less.
How can our opinions be wrong? ???
I'm fine with them playing two nights, but like I said before IN MY OPINION I'd rather they play ONE headline slot, and one super-long latenight slot. You Phish fans will get an extra couple hours of hearing them, and we non-Phish fans will get an extra "headliner" on the main stage one of the nights. I consider it win-win all around if they do things this way.
As for:
"There will be as much variety in the 2 shows Phish plays as you will get the entire weekend seeing many different bands"
I may not be well versed in the ways of Phish, but are you saying that Phish alone has the diversity of all the bands that could possibly be at 'Roo put together? Last year I checked out Sharon Jones, Against Me!, The Sword, Talib Kweli, Pearl Jam, Tiesto, and Alison Krauss to name a few... are you saying Phish alone will span this diversity? Because if so, then by all means bring on the Phish. I kind of doubt this could be possible however, so I'm going to assume you've gotten a bit fanatical. Anyway....
All we're trying to say is that we want diversity in our headliners. The beauty of Bonnaroo is that if you don't like something, there's usually something else to check out. I'm fine with ONE night being something I don't really care about, but forcing TWO nights of the same band headlining blows. That's why I want their second set to be latenight, at least that way I'll have something else to check out.
/before you smite me, please realize I didn't say anything negative about Phish, just that I personally don't want to see them twice.

within the studio aspect...no...but within the live show aspect...it is quite possible for phish to cover this amount of diversity.....is it likely that all would be covered....no....but it is possible....IMO

I have to argue this because I believe it:
You should like Phish more.
There it is... the elephant in the room. Why don't you like Phish? The Phish fests of the late 90's paved the way for the Bonnaroo experience. This alone is reason enough to give them 2 nights (though I'll certainly take a late night slot... I just think you should too). Outside of that, you should be excited with us! Most people who don't like Phish I find simply haven't heard a lot of it, and what they did hear was the wrong song in the wrong circumstances.
Do this for me: Obtain the album "Rift"... I don't care how. Listen to it with some nice headphones while you work out / sip a scotch, do whatever you do to wind down and give it a real shot. Then, whether you liked it or not, get the album "Junta" and listen to that. Then just go ahead and get the rest of them so that you can sing along with the rest of us come June.

I hope you'll forgive me for being skeptical... From what I've seen they're a fun band, but I don't consider the fact that they might cover 99 Problems again to be a worthy replacement for actually having Jay-Z there for example. Sure it's possible they might touch on some Soul, Hip Hop, Techno, Bluegrass, Punk, Metal and Blues...but I find it rather impossible that they'd do any of those as well as a band that actually specializes in that genre of music.
Which brings me back to my point: In my opinion, I'd really like them to give us one night of Phish headlining, then give us something completely different the other nights.

^^^ they might deserve it but i think what hes trying to say is he doesnt want to see them twice, im with it. Im going to try and do my voluteer work during one of their sets since theyre rumored to play twice

I think you may have misread what I wrote. I never said I DON'T like Phish, I just said I'd rather have ONE night of them headlining, and ONE night of them in a late night slot. I want diversity in my headliners, I don't think even my favorite band should be headlining two nights (in fact I'd feel bad for the people that didn't like that band if they had to endure two nights of the same thing). Don't get me wrong, I'd still see them, I'd just like the option to see something else during the second show if I choose to.

Yeah, I'm no music snob, I'll definitely listen to them more in preparation for 'Roo, thanks for the album recommendations. But I still stand by my statement that NO ONE should headline two nights. Sure WSP headlined twice in '05, but this is a very different fest than it was '05...
DIVERSITY BABAY
(seriously though, happy for you Phans that your wish seems to be coming true)

FUUUUUUUCK
I want to go to Bonnaroo so bad this year but im just not sure its going to happen. This just makes it hurt more. People saying 2 nights of phish is overkill are ridiculous. Thats simply not enough! Headline Sat/Sun, Friday latenight, and some other set on the sonic stage during the day im still not sure thats enough Phish. This is quacking PHISH, Bonnaroo wouldnt be what it is without them. BLAH! im so mad that i dont know what everyone plans for Bonnaroo are this year. The last ive heard, most people arent going or arent positive they are
and whats up with Jay-Z, is he trying to build a hippy fanbase lol.
