After seeing my first full-length My Morning Jacket show last week (only caught 45 minutes or an hour of their 'Roo set - still kicking myself for it, too), I think they're ready to take the next step and go from Which Stage latenight to headliner. Preferably as the Sunday night closer - I think that'd be simply perfect, and they're still small enough that it would help peter out the crowd a bit for the Monday morning rush to get out.
They've done so much for Bonnaroo over the years, and have proved their worth time and time again. Both gigs were very high profile shows for them, and both gigs were some of the best shows I've ever seen. I don't think we'll get them as headliner in 2009, given the current rumors, but I'm really holding out for 2010.

If they continue their upwards shoot through the music industry then I have no doubt they will headline Bonnaroo within the next 3 years or so. Sunday night would be perfect. A good band for crowd thinners in leaving (I mean, if you don't like MMJ then get the hell out, right? ) and being Sunday they could definitely push the limits as far as how long they play.
Jim loves to run all over the stage when playing. He's one of the few bands I can think of that would absolutely cover every inch of that gigantic stage area during the course of their show.

I voted yes, they would be a perfect way to end the festival, I just don't think it will happen until 2010 or 2011, with Jim James saying he wants to work more on the Monsters of Folk with M. Ward and Oberst.
i'm afraid they won't even be at bonnaroo09.... i hope they are and i thought they would be.
but....
i read an interview where jim was saying that he planned do a lot of writing and not so much touring in 2009.... he also said he and the Monsters of Folk (m. ward, jim, and conor) would be doing something together....
"I think next year is going to be more about working on stuff, working on music. I'll be doing the Monsters of Folk thing with (Bright Eyes') Conor (Oberst) and working on some MMJ stuff. Next year will definitely be more of a songwriting year."
they can still bust it out on the farm.... come'on wit it...

They haven't^ to my knowledge. I know I am in the minority here, but I have seen one full MMJ set, then parts of both of their sets from 05' and 08', and I would be satisfied if I did not see them again. Talk about noodling jams. I feel like this could be a band like WSP where if they got an awesome new guitarist it would renew my interest in them, but till then, I would not be thrilled seeing them with a headlining slot.
When I saw them their jams sometimes seemed like they were never ending, and I was rarely impressed by them. Just my opinion on them, like I said, I am well aware I am in the minority.

You're not alone. I've never really gotten the MMJ thing totally myself.
But I also think there are plenty of acts that could headline Bonnaroo that I wouldn't be into which doesn't mean they shouldn't. I just don't MMJ is that big yet. I think they'll be there one day, but people often forget how much higher the standard of headliner is at Bonnaroo compared to other fests. You have to be able to draw arena sized crowds and have a significant body of work that preferably spans decades. I'd say MMJ for headliner in 2016.
I'll revise my statement to say you have to be able to draw arena sized crowds and have a significant body of work that preferably spans decades or be Jack Johnson.

Definitely agree with you dudezer. I think a lot of people would enjoy that show if they did headline, and I would go to it, but they certainly aren't big enough yet. I mean look at this years rumors, Phish and The Boss. MMJ is nowhere close to that level of popularity and draw yet.
Edit: I have no idea how all that Jack Johnson business happened. Defies logic.

Hmmm. I'm fairly certain that we were both at the same show once and I must say that was as far from "noodling jams" as it gets... But I guess that's just my opinion and you have yours. But I mean, I can see where people could call the Grateful Dead noodling jams, or maybe... just maaaayybe Phish... but My Morning Jacket?? Really?? I don't know if I've ever heard someone categorize them as a "noodling jamband." And I most certainly would never want to see another guitarist up there on stage aside from guest appearances during shows. That would actually ruin it for me just a bit. Two Tone and Jim do such great work together...
again, just my opinion
edit: Just saw your more recent post. I guess if you define "noodling" as never-ending then I could see where you're coming from. I personally consider noodling jams to be just going up and down a pentatonic scale with no soul or emotion behind your notes. Jim James does neither, in my opinion

I think we are using noodling in different ways. Really I was just uninspired by the jams, noodling could be the wrong word. Some of my favorite live shows though, Umphrey's and ZPZ. So I clearly prefer a different approach and execution to my jams. Run Thru at C-ville was pretty sick nasty though, I will admit.
Edit: I wrote this before I saw your edit. Also, you must hate You Enjoy Myself, Strum. ;D

^^Two each his or her own, I suppose. I don't think I've seen a guitarist inspire me or send chills down my back before aside from the night I saw Clapton live...
What makes you think I'd hate YEM? I mean, it's not my favorite Phish jam but it's far from the bottom... I'd say in most cases I've heard it breaches the basics of a pentatonic scale by quite a lot. And hell, even if it does stick to the structure of the scale what I hear sounds incredible and is played in a way not many other songs can convey, as far as I'm concerned.
You want noodling? Look at Kirk Hammett. He just happens to shred the noodling to pieces, so I have some respect for him on the technical level. In my opinion he can't even being to approach the soul and emotion conveyed by Jim James or Trey

Damn, I guess i was using my definition of noodling again. I am a YEM fan though. Kirk Hammett could probably be the picture in the dictionary for the definition of noodling. Still impressive, though.
Edit: Thats a lie, we'd be better served with Yngwie Malmsteen.
I would love them to headline, but it won't happen for at the very least 3 years........
3 years gives them enough time to put out 2 more albums, plus I fully expect to have a Monsters of Folk show at Bonnaroo, so it wouldn't be like Jim wouldn't be at the farm. It'll happen eventually
I don't want MMJ to headline. I'd rather have Wilco. Truth be told they (MMJ) are one of my favorite bands in the world. But how they became that way was night after night of good solid songs. This tour it stopped being about the songs and started being a 'show'. I'm not going with a 'they were better way back when' approach. I'm going with they lost that magick for me THIS TOUR approach. Besides. They are better fit for late nights anyway.
Not this year. Not next year. Another album for sure.
Now Nate ... Lets talk about this Monsters Of Folk idea.

i'm gonna say it...
in a perfect world each of the "monsters" would be there and play a set as the "monsters" and then a set with their bands....
i think they might be there... Monsters of Folk 09!!!
and can we finally get a jim james superjam...? i want to hear him sing Prince's "Pussy Control"....

After seeing the funk covers MMJ played and absolutely nailed this year (Sly & the Family Stone, James Brown, Kool & the Gang, Bobby Womack, Funkadelic) I think a Jim James led funk/soul/r&b superjam might be the most amazing thing ever.
