Hey everybody, it's been a little more than a week, I know.... but here's the latest tip from a 4 'roo vet.....
As soon as the lineup announcement is made start checking out the bands you don't know. Check their myspace pages or wherever their music is online. If you hear something you really like *gasp* buy the album!
I have a good friend who is in a VERY popular metal band (L.O.G.) and from what he's told me, if this were the 80's they'd be millionaires.... but as is the case now, with easy downloading and sharing of tunes... he says he's 'making a good living'. BUY THE MUSIC YOU LIKE, or at least buy an album or two from the bands you really like so they don't have to go back to being roofers during the day!
Also, if your familure with half the artists at Bonnaroo you'll have a better time than not. If I didn't check out the sites I wouldn't have known about or even made an effort to see (in 08): The Felice Brothers, MIA, Battles, ZPZ, the Sword, Tiesto, MGMT, or even Ghostland (my alltime favorite roo show other than the flips).

Half of the fun of the line up announcement for me is always that there are suddenly 40-50 bands that I have absolutely never heard of that I have a reason to check out! Excellent advice again sir!
To add to it... When you are on the farm and there isn't a show that you absolutely really want to see and it's between a band or two that you're familiar with but don't love and then some that you've never heard of... go try out the band you've never heard. You just might have stumbled upon your favorite band of the summer and then upon getting home you may see that they have some more tour dates near you! This happened to me twice in 07!

This happened to me with Mavis Staples. I had NEVER heard of her, went to her show in 2007 and fell in LOVE! She was my favorite show of the weekend. I ran straight home, bought her album and she's coming to Birmingham in a month. I'm definitely going to be at her show! ;D

Happened to me when I was waiting for Tom Morello in '07 and I saw The Black Keys before him.....they delivered it right man, rocked my face off.
Some other good advice is if you've got a little time between the next set, just wander around and follow whatever sounds good... I did this 2 yrs ago and ended up at Fountains Of Wayne... very odd experience for me and now admitting to it too

The downside of this is that since it is going to be a couple of months between the line up announcement and the schedule you may inadvertently create a conflict that wouldn't have existed. This has happened to me a few times.

Which bands were they bro? I became a fan of Chali 2na from wondering into his show last year on the way home from a long day of music and the 'bad vibe' of Kanye. I'd heard of him and of course Jurassic five but never really gave him much time or interest. It was perfect I was still feeling " mighty fine " at whatever it was 4am or so even after the whole downer of Phil ending early because of Kanye and all the negativity going around from Kanye being so late ( I personally was not upset as I care not for him at all nor did I waste any time waiting for his ego ) Going past the Other tent I heard the groove and it pulled me over. I look up on stage and could see that there were like 10 people on the stage and after a few realised that it was most of Galactic backing up Chali. The set was magical for me and really brought the evening to a beautiful close. Chali was so cool and so humble he found a place in my heart and music collection that night.
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."
Happened to us with Brothers Past (06) - stumbled onto their set and ended up watching the whole thing. We bought the album at Roo, and listened to them the whole way home.

That Mavis show was SOLID!
Had a blast. We were standing next to two people on the side with signs who were protesting hippies or something.
You are right, I would have never heard John Butler Trio in 07
Same here and I have seen them twice since - they have become one my favorites. Also Damien Rice, Rilo Kiley, Donovan Frankenreiter, MGMT, and I re-discovered Pearl Jam
With Roo '08, iTunes/Apple had that free sampler and like a dumbass, I didn't get around to listening to it until after Bonnaroo. Through that mix, I discovered a few new favorites and now I want to totally slap myself in the forehead for missing the chance to see them.
no offense to your buddy's band, but with the way the record companies were throwing around money and contracts in the 80's (especially for metal bands), anyone with a guitar could have been a millionaire

This is a good tip and i look forward to hearing more from you.
I love going through the lineup looking for new bands. Last year i discovered Two Gallants and Newton Faulkner this way; along with many others.
What i do is sit down with some beers and corn and i start at the bottom of the lineup and work my way up. Even if i know the band already i will listen to a few tracks from them. It may be weird, but it's like i pretend i'm at the festie and i get to hear every band. By the time i get to the headliners i'm nice and buzzin, way into the music, and even more excited for Bonnaroo.
As for creating conflicts that you may not of have, i think it is better to have a conflict then to get home and realize you missed the opportunity to see your new favorite band, because you didin't know about them yet.
I also do this for just about any lineup for any festival whether i am going or not.
