right, like how are bands like umph and wsp above Zepp ! mind = blown
I think some people don't consider Led Zep to be a jam band, but if you've ever seen a DVD, they are most definitely. They should be 1a and 1b with the Dead.
On a somewhat related note, Here is a taste of the Phish phans I spoke about in a different thread:
"Ryan | 1/12/2009, 7:05 pm EST
Phish as a band knows far more about music than 99% of the bands on this website "
I think Rolling Stone needs to learn the difference between a jam band and a band that jams. I don't know anyone who would call Jimi Hendrix or Led Zep a jam band.

what's the difference? they jammed better than the so-called jam bands in my opinion.
I don't see My Morning Jacket as a jam band either.
Have you been to an MMJ show?
Yea I was at their show at Bonnaroo. I don't know, I love Jacket, tied with Ryan Adams as the band I listen to the most, however, I don't see them as a jam band, same with Led Zep. Certainly they will lengthen their songs, like on Run Through or Steam Engine, but it doesn't fit in with the other bands listed, and yes I've seen most of those other bands live several times.

Any of these artists appearing on this list don't mean they are strictly jambands, just that they could be partly categorized as such. Zep, Jimi, MMJ, we all know they aren't primarily jam artists. But it's not wrong to say they were *also* jam artists. Furthermore, people were voting for bands within that category. I agree that Zep is better than most of the artists that outranked them, but probably not as a jamband.
And I also agree that the comments on the post were much more entertaining than the post itself.

It's all opinions really. A group of people who happened to know about the voting chose the order. No matter what musical poll there is, it will always just be opinions. I love the comments under the list. It's almost like these people placed bets on the order and are now upset about losing the bet. I think it would be cool to have a similar poll for everyone on inforoo to take and see how our list differs from the one on the link above.
First of all, it's a readers' poll. I'd like to know if RS provided a list from which to choose or if readers just submitted nominations. Finally, I saw MMJ 11 times in 9 months this year and they are most definitely NOT a jam band. Jammy elements in some of their songs -- on occasion -- does not a jam band make.

Why Dave Matthews?..Zepp,7?..Jimi,11??..SHENANIGANS....but really Rolling Stone's been more than dissapointing the last few years....I've got a free subscription(due to some sort of error) and I'm about one more cover of fall out boy short of calling them and cancelling my free subscription

Agreed...they're a band that jams sometimes, not a jam band. Very tight structure to their songs, with some freedom in the solos and some bits of some songs.
(And that's not a bad thing...they're an impressively tight band.)

I definitely would. Check out Jimi Hendrix and the Band of Gypsys at the Fillmore. Jimi even says they only know like 9 songs and they are clearly making stuff up as they go and definitely jamming.
Then, check out How the West Was Won by Led Zeppelin (this goes for everyone. You dont know what theyr capable of until you listen to this (unless you saw them in the 60s' or 70s). I think the the 25 minute Dazed and Confused (complete with Jimmy page playing his les paul with a violin bow- absolutely mindblowing.) 23 minute Whole Lotta Love. I think that might qualify.
And btw both of them would blow anyone playing now out of the water.

Yeah, Jimi and the Gypsies at Woodstock was the same. Whole lot of jamming, most of the show actually.
I still don't consider him a jam act, though, for the same reason I don't consider The Dead a jam band. To me, the "Jam Band" is something that came along in the nineties and later (actually the eighties, but I don't think the term had been coined at that point...had it?). The Grateful Dead planted the seed for jam bands, and they're head and shoulders above the rest in my opinion, but I don't call them a jam band, because I think they're bigger than that. They're the prototype.
Kinda the same with Jimi. The Gypsies jammed like the dickens (you hear him several times in the Woodstock show tell the audience "y'all can leave if you want, we're just jammin..."), but I don't consider them a jam band either.
Then again, you know what they say about opinions.

grr i hope this doesnt double post, i got kicked off sort of ... yea i to this day am not sure what i consider a jam band and it looks like there is not a consenses either ... i saw the jimi NYE show in NY and the woodstock show, and for that matter the first time Zep played in the US .. its cool that people still reference those shows and they are not forgotten cr****

FRANK ZAPPA PLANTED THE JAMBAND SEED! Actually that is just my opinion, but I do think Zappa was more influential on modern improve prone acts than the dead. To me a jam band is just that, a band that jams. Umphrey's, prog rock that jams, SCI, bluegrass that jams. So this list really depends on your interpretation of a jam band, which i see there is a thread on, but i have not read.

Yeah, I mean, if anyone really wants to go back to the root, you might go back as far as Jazz (or even further). The Grateful Dead didn't invent the concept of improv, and neither did Jimi. They were just following the lead of their jazz, blues, and bluegrass influences.

honestly as much as i love Dave Mathews, he does not belong above Jimi Hendrix on any list.
edit: just read this comment from there, its pretty rofl
yeoo, this be like the headiest og heady lists, I couldnt of come up better if I had smoked some deems, boofed some mahldog, huffed some jenkem all the while riding to the moon in my heady crystal powered spaceship
also it may be somewhat important to note that this is a readers FAVORITE jam bands list... not necessarily "best". for example.... moe. one of my favorite jam bands but that doesnt necessarily make them "better" than led zeppelin or hendrix
First things first, Pink Floyd was the greatest jamband ever. But IMO I think people are confusing the term. I said in a different thread that alot of bands jam, including myself, and it's just a term for the way you play for a while. I caught alot of heat for it too ;D But I wasn't trying to diss any bands by saying that. You just jam, your not writing any music. I think all these bands were great jambands, and I don't think they mean how many times they've done it or this imaginary category of music called "jambands," it simply means who was the best at improvising during a show per se. Idk maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but I just never understood it when people started saying "jamband" now counted as a genre of music. Personally I consider The Dead and Phish as psychadelic/experimental bands, BECAUSE they incorporate so many other genres into their written music. Same with all the other bands that are "jambands." Meh, I liked the article though
