THEN: Organizers of Bonnaroo, the annual outdoor music festival that brings tens of thousands of visitors to Manchester each June, announced last fall that they were negotiating to buy the 530-acre farm they have been renting each year since 2002. A principal member of the production team let the purchase be known during a meeting with county planners. In January, organizers further announced they were finalizing the details of the purchase but would not release other information. Farm owner Sam McAllister also declined to comment.
NOW: Last Monday, details of the purchase became public when deed documents were filed with the Coffee County Register of Deeds office. The documents revealed that Bonnaroo paid $8,686,482 million, or $16,374 per acre, apparently a top-dollar price. According to the Coffee County Property Assessor's office, farmland in the county is selling for between $8,000 to $10,000 per acre. The owner of record is New Era Farms LLC, which is a subsidiary of Superfly Productions, the Bonnaroo promoter. Superfly officials have previously said the site will probably host other musical events, too.
