I figured i would start a thread for this. I defintiely wanna go, but right now its just an idea. One of my friends who went to Bonnaroo in 2007 went to burning man last year. Its ridiculously crazy from what i hear. The thing that Bonnaroo is really lacking is the interactive art installations compared to Burning man, I dont think you can make much of a comparison though. The art there is everywhere.
Some general info.

Havent been but have looked into it-you have to be pretty self-sufficient-amazing art instillations-they had a huge ass dragon one year-people standing all over it-and Girl Talk has been there

didnt know they sold tickets. now I really dont want to go. most of the installations are brought by groups and I dont think they get funding for it. I know a lot have fundraisers and work year round.

My friends description of last year. "i would undoubtedly consider it to be the highest concentration of amazing, evolved, progressive people on the planet. it is a life changing event and i wouldnt miss it for the world. go!!"
I wouldnt want to go without something to bring or share, but finding room in my car is my limitation. As far as preparedness goes, it goes back to what I can fit in my car or what vehicle we bring. Right now its just an idea, and i dont plan on going by myself. I want to find a girl who would like to go, but not everyone you meet wants to go to a place like Burning Man.
I have heard it is amazing....I am def curious ....but would never imagine going on my own...I am SOOO not organized enough to EVER make it by that long in that kind of environment on my lonesome - LMAO!! But...it would def be the adventure of a lifetime from what I hear....with a group of organized peeps I think it would be amazing!
I really want to go too. I have a girlfriend who lives out in LA, she's going this year, I may tag along. She has friends who go every year, and they told her that you join a "camp," and that all the different camps have themes. She said that one was the "suburbs" and people brought picket fences, mailboxes and astro turf for around their tents!! I LOVE that!

There is no focus on music, but music happens there. The location is black rock city in Nevada. type in burning man to google maps.
I would like someone who has been to describe it, its nearly impoosible to realize if you havent been.
To start here are the ten principles of burning man.
Radical inclusion Anyone is welcomed and there are no prerequisites to be part of Burning Man.[25] All participants are expected to bring a ticket, provide for their own basic needs, and follow the minimal rules of the event.
Gifting Instead of cash, event participants are encouraged to rely on a gift economy, a sort of potlatch. In the earliest days of the event, an underground barter economy also existed, in which burners exchanged material goods and/or "favors" with each other. While this was originally supported by the Burning Man organization, this now is largely discouraged. Instead, burners are encouraged to give gifts to one another unconditionally.
Decommodification No cash transactions are permitted at the event in accordance with the principles of Burning Man, with the exception of the following: Admission tickets, although tickets for the 2008 event are only available in advance at select stores, by mail or via the Burning Man ticket website. Café beverages such as coffee, chai, lemonade, etc., which are sold at Center Camp Café. Ice, available for purchase at three places in the city: "Camp Arctica" in Center Camp, "Ice Cubed" at the 3 o'clock portal and "Ice-9" at the 9 o'clock portal. Ice sales benefit the local Gerlach-Empire school system. Tickets for the shuttle bus to the nearest Nevada communities of Gerlach and Empire which is operated by contractor Green Tortoise. A re-entry wristband, which allows a person to leave and re-enter the event and may be purchased at the gate upon exit. An airport use fee, payable at the airport upon first entry. RV dump service and camp gray water disposal service, available for cash from Johnny on the Spot, the official contractor. Diesel and biodiesel, supplied by Sierra Fuels, the official contractor. Private portable toilets and servicing, which can be arranged with the official contractor.
Radical self-reliance Because of the event's harsh environment and remote location, participants are expected to be responsible for their own subsistence. Since the LLC forbids any commerce, with the exception of the items stated in Decommodification, participants must be prepared and bring their own supplies such as water, food, proper clothing and shelter, just to name a few. Nothing is provided by the event with the exception of portable toilet.
Radical self-expression Participants are encouraged to express themselves in a number of ways through various art forms and projects. The event is clothing-optional and public nudity is common, though not practiced by the majority.
Communal effort Burning Man is a cooperative and collaborative event. Participants are encouraged to work with and help fellow participants.
Civic responsibility Participants are encouraged and assume responsibility to be part of a civil society in which federal, state and local laws are obeyed and communicate this to other participants.
"Leave No Trace" policy Participants are committed to a leave-no-trace event. They strive to leave the area around them in better condition than before their arrival to ensure their participation does not have a long term impact on the environment.
Participation "Attendees" are encouraged to participate since Burning Man is about participation in one form or another.
Immediacy Participants are asked to become part of the event, to experience what is around them and society and to explore their inner selves and their relation to the event.

i like the rules, esp the no cash trading lol
definitely sounds like something i would be into, just everyone sharing what they brought. this is a huge reason why i started getting into Bonnaroo/festivals in the first place. i like an overwhelming sense of community.

I'd love to go to Burning Man. Starting in 2007, I started going to regional burns in the Southeast and they're absolutely incredible. Some of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and the single most communal thing I've ever done.
Yes...I have heard the regional burns and orgs are the best way to work your way into the whole environment of Burning Man...they say it is the best prep for the actual Festie....it is supposed to be the most intense festie experience ever! ;D But I have also heard that you REALLY have to take off that ENTIRE week...(like the two weekends AND the week in between) to REALLY get the whole experience....

operated by contractor Green Tortoise
The only time I ever sayed in a hostile... it was in SF and it was operated by the Green Tortoise... if you ever stay in SF at a hostile? Stay at the Green Tortoise... preferrably, in the "other" building
Okay, all I have to say in this thread for now, love the green tortoise ;D

I don't think I'm ready to going to Burning Man NOW, but I definitely want to go before I die! It sounds amazing. Are there any regional Burns near AL?
Actually I think there are some in South Al...I KNOW there is a regional sect in the FL area....it may be more central South Fl tho There is also a VERY active group in the LA area....I'm sure if you really want to get involved you won't have any problems finding a group to hook up with....
Oh...and let me know if you decide to....I might want to tag along! ;D

I'm not sure about Alabama, but I went to a burn last year in Lafayette, Georgia. I don't think it was all that far from the GA/Alabama border.
As far as the regional sect in Florida, yeah you have to go down into Florida a bit. Preheat and Afterburn are both in Lakeland, Florida which is fairly close to Tampa.
NC also has a very popular regional burn held annually at Deerfields called Transformus.
If you ever have the chance to go to one, even if its a bit of drive, its worth it. Burns are a form of bliss all their own.
Yeah...I'm definitely gonna have to check some of this out...Lafayette is near my old stomping grounds, close to Auburn...I know right where it is and yes it is RIGHT on the AL/GA border. Maybe I can convince dancer to go that close to enemy territory- LOL!
Hmmmm...guess I'll have to get back into hooping....I can do that...I'll have to get Meggie to help me make a new one. No way I can do the poi thing - way too uncoordinated...esp if it involves fire - LMAO! I'll just have to make a REALLY BLINKY hoop!

I can do that and can prolly make you a blinky one also - LOL

i think im going to the GA burn since i cant make it to burning man till next year plane ticket is way too much for a broke college student and anyways the smaller burn will prepare me for the real deal.

Hahaa! I guess we have a Spring Break craft to work on now! ;D
Ehh...we'll tell them it's "fun"...we might even let them play with them when we are finished! Kids are still as gullible as we were when we were that age....aren't they??
i watched a documentary on BM a while back - they take some of the money on ticket sales to fund art exhibits (in addition to dealing with securing the land, security, blah blah blah)... so it's not like "the man" is at burning man just because they sell tickets.
ill end up there eventually. probably go to firefly in one of the northern states sooner.

Im thinking I will go next year, but I am uncertain. I will go if someone else I know will. My main thing is having more people to go with. I checked out the website for Burning Flipside which is the Austin preburn, but today was the last day to send out for tickets I believe. The only other thing that sucks is Burning man is during the second week of school, but I pulled off Coachella in 2007 so it shouldnt be a problem.
Hey all! I have been wanting/needing to make the journey to Burning Man since the late 90's....but have been maybe a little too intimidated to do so! BUT this year I'm very hopeful I'll get there! Is there anyone else out there that really wants to come too or can offer some words of wisdom? Peace & Love.
