Heading to Bonnaroo Interstate 81 southbound between Wytheville, VA and Knoxville, TN? Well make sure to obey the speed limit and probably a good idea to avoid having anything illegal, if you know what I mean. Wytheville, VA around exit 70 has a headquarters for VA State of Police, so the fuzz is everywhere in that area just looking to jack up somebody’s day. Your next point of focus will be the Tri-cities around exit 17 Abingdon/Bristol, VA area, which you will then enter into Tennessee at around exit 71, from this point you have about another 60 miles to be careful. Last year between exits 69 and exit 30 we counted about 20 vehicles pulled over to the side of the road being searched, and several people already being arrested, and you could clearly see the vehicles had stickers on them, clearly were packed down with camping gear, VW buses, kids w/ dreads, you get the picture. I am pretty sure that all of these Roo travelers were not all speeding at the same time, and I live in this area and I can tell you they have nothing better to do, and I guarantee they will be ready to do it again this year. So if you have to use Interstate 81 just be careful and if you need anything illegal just wait till you get there, trust me I’m sure there will be plenty. My wife and I don’t even do drugs we were just disgusted to see the illegal activities our own police department were doing and if this can save 1 person then job well done. Well everyone get ready for the best year yet, and it looks really promising that Phish will be headlining this year! BONNAROOOOO
I came down I-81 last year (from Annapolis, MD). I'm not kidding when I tell you we did not see ONE police officer until we were pretty close to Manchester. We left Tuesday around 3 pm, stopped around 10 pm, then started again around noon on Wednesday.

I'm not sure where i was but i think it was 81, and a drug task force pulled me over for swerving, he asked if i had any marijuana or ecstasy on me lol, i told him i did not and he asked me and my friend to step out of the car, i told him i was tired because i had been driving from massachusetts, but really i didn't realize i swerved at all. The cop asked if he could search my car and i asked him if i refused would i get in any trouble. He said no your legally allowed to deny a search and he wasnt there to take away my rights. So i said no you cant, and he said," we'll i'm gonna go head and get a k9 unit down here" eventually the dog got here and sniffed around the cop told me that the dog," had alerted for the marijuana and the cocaine" and they searched my car completely, after a thorough search and them making a huge mess of my car they sent us on our way

Every officer that can is on duty for Bonnaroo. I have never seen as many lurking around as I have during my two trips.
I was stopped twice in 2007 and then in 2008 had trouble with the RV so they worried me for about 3 hours until I could get AAA to agree to let me be towed locally. Hulletts is the only group that can tow during this weekend - they are festival rates but very good if you need them!!!
All I can say, is I do not speed and I am almost 60 so there is no reason to stop me other than they had nothing better to do. They use any excuse to stop you. I did nothing to attract attention to me. All I could think of was that I was so early that they were not very busy or it was for show.
They couldn't believe that I was alone and was going to Bonnaroo. They were so ugly. Now, TDOT was wonderful and they buffered the officers and THP. I did learn that they brought in a lot of out of area people to help.
I'm not sure where i was but i think it was 81, and a NO NO WORD!!!! task force pulled me over for swerving, he asked if i had any marijuana or ecstasy on me lol, i told him i did not and he asked me and my friend to step out of the car, i told him i was tired because i had been driving from massachusetts, but really i didn't realize i swerved at all. Hah, what a bunch of crap. The dogs don't signal for specific NO NO WORD!!!!. I know this first hand. I don't want to share the details because it would break the forum rules.
By that way, when they tell you to wait for the K-9, tell them to get lost. It's your right to terminate the encounter with police. Unless your being detained or arrested, they are just supposed to issue you your ticket and let you on your way. You are not required to wait for the K-9 at all (EDIT: Even if it's in the car that pulled you over, you have to get to the farm! You can't waste that extra minute it's going to take for him to get the dog out)
I travel 81 all the time... I have been pulled over once outside of the trip to Bonnaroo.. they really do look for anything to pull you over. I was pulled over for aggressive driving, because i passed with too small of a space to safely squeeze into, apparently.
On the way home from Bonnaroo last year, I had just given up the drivers seat to a friend of mine, when we were pulled over only 5 mins later for doing 7 over the speed limit. Yes, it was very clear we had just been to Bonnaroo with all our camping gear piled high in the rear of the car, but seriously! 7mph over and a ticket for $150. REDONK!

aruawhere is absolutely correct, You do not have to wait for K-9 to show up. Politely ask if you are being detained and then complain about having to be on your way and that you would like to leave. Make sure to do this without being rude and always say, "officer, ma'am, or sir" - Also the passenger has their own seperate rights and must give consent to search their person and belongings, not just the driver/owner of vehicle. Be safe and smart.
