I recently stumbled upon this site claiming that Led Zeppelin (one of my favorite bands by the way) Stole lyrics and riffs for some of their big songs. Now please don't shoot the messenger. I was wondering if any one has heard about his before earfarm.com/features/daily-feature/monday/1820

As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!
yeah, it's been fairly well known that they lifted some of their riffs from other artists. Personally, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Tons of people take riffs from other songs. If it fits, it fits.
Lyrics on the other hand... that's a little shadier.
When I listened to some of the comparisons...the lyrics are a direct copy of the original artist! Whole Lotta love and Since Ive been Loving you are ridiculous.

yeah if you listen to Small Faces doing You Need Loving, Plant's influence and 'borrowing' from Steve Marriott is pretty blatant. the whole 'woman! you neeed loooove!' part comes right out of that song at around 3:30
"There is an ancient celtic axiom that says 'Good people drink good beer.' which is true, then as now. Just look around you in any public bar-room, and you will quickly see: Bad people drink bad beer. Think about it."

It was different back then....There were traditional blues songs that lots of people played. Alot of the Dead's stuff is like that too. Its not like they downloaded it off limewire and copied it. They played in blues clubs and learned it from other blues players, and words and pieces get shuffled around. They were like 19 back then, so some of it they probably couldnt remember who they learned it from, nevermind where the song originated. And its not like they could google it. It was their version of songs lots of people played, and theirs was obviously superior bc nobody's heard of most of the people on that list...
This also all stuff off their first 2 albums, mostly off the first. I have all of Zeppelin's studio stuff on my ipod, well over 100 songs, and there's not a bad one on there. The first 5 albums are basically perfect. The Stairway reference is just ridiculous, that songs got like 9 guitar parts, and one part sounds like some other guy's a little bit because theyre in the same key? Please....
"We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, movie gods, and rock stars. But we wont, and we're slowly learning that fact & we're very, very pissed off......."
^^^ Totally agree. Look at most bands from that era. They all covered old blues and country songs with a slight twist. The Stones are a good example. Some songs were complete covers, some songs used "borrowed" riffs and a few were actually originals (and tend to be standout tracks). Ain't nothing wrong with that.
I guess that would make sense, I am sure it was much more difficult to find out who did what and replay it as well, heck even copy it over and over again.

Here's a good one about stairway, what all the classic rock stations call the best song ever (which it may be).
Led Zep toured with a band called Spirit, they obviously never went anywhere, but because of that they let Zeppelin borrow a riff from them, it turned into stairway. Listen to it on youtube, at about 47 seconds in, it's like dead on . The song has no lyrics, all instrumental, and I would say the riff is only one part of stairway, so they definitely made it their own in the end.
I think "back in the day" there was just more willing to "give" the music to other people, musicians and listeners alike. Spirit was almost like a muse, and if it wouldn't have happened that way, who would've never even known about that band anyway. Who knows maybe Led Zep threw Spirit a few riffs, like trading basketball cards or something, it just worked out that they tossed the Micheal Jordan rookie card to Zep for a Mugsey Bougues.
Everyone has stolen a riff from somebody, it's just natural. Every song I write is based off of something I have learned, and most times times it's a technique or chord I learned from playing a different song. Doesn't mean I'm stealing it, just means I'm being influenced by them. LZ has been ridiculed forever about this, but I never saw the big deal. There isn't one musician out there that hasn't used someone else's riff. It's one thing to cover a song a song and call it your own, but having a few seconds of your song sound the same as another doesn't mean anything
It happens all the time. Most of their blues songs are straight covers. It has been many moons since I looked closely at my album jackets (that's right, I said ALBUM jackets) for Led Zeppelin I and II, but I thought they gave credit to the original artists anyway.
It's like they say kids, "There are no original ideas left in the world". Don't know if I totally believe that, but I know all music is influenced by those who came before.
This reminds me of the primus song Year of the Parrot. The lyrics go: "Take a Zeppelin riff And you alter it a bit And make lots of money It's called plagiarism"
Kind of ironic in light of this post now that I think about it.

We as humans take a note ,a sound , a catch phrase and we use it alter it add to it . That is how we have always done it and always will .
